Briton is recognised as world's first officially genderless person

Cutting off your dick to spite the beard on your face...

Quote:

Norrie May-Welby, 48, was born a man but had a sex change operation in 1990, at the age of 28.

After becoming unhappy as a woman, May-Welby decided to become a “neuter”. The 48-year-old is now officially recognised as a person of no specific gender.

May-Welby emigrated to Australia at the age of seven after being born in Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Officials there altered the Briton’s birth certificate to include the new no-gender classification after doctors were apparently unable to determine the sex of the expat’s body.

May-Welby seems quite pleased with this. I'm happy they were able to come to this decision without bias getting in the way.

Now, if only there was a genderless personal pronoun fit to use in this situation.

Yeah, no. Technically the person never cut it off to become a neuter, generally to become a woman (which is what happened first), it gets modified into a clitoris, since the two are analogous. Then the would be woman undergoes a vaginoplasty to create, uh, that.

So first he decided to be castrated (not the first, see eunuch), then SHE was spayed (not the first, see hysterectomy), now they're a neuter (not the first, see NEUTER). When someone undergoes a vasectomy or hysterectomy, they retain their pronoun, which in this case could be taken as either male or female. So I'd say either pronoun applies. 'It' is dehumanizing and should be avoided.

A better pronoun would be useful, but we have none.

I gotta ask, why does it matter? if you ever met this person in real life, you might have a "What's that, it's Pat!" moment, but otherwise wouldn't you just pass him/her and not really give them much notice? If it's just the surgery that squicks you out, under what circumstances would you find out that this person had undergone surgery?

How does this affect you, and what does it matter?

Also, because this raises a very obvious question, I present the most likely answer.

It matters in that it matters, in that I reacted to it. It affects me, but only in theory, in that I reacted to it. If this seems circular and irrational, that must be because it is.

I am absolutely self-absorbed, and more interested in my visceral reaction of "BLARGH! UNCLEAN!" than I am in condemning (insert pronoun here). i like to think of myself as a tolerant chap, but it occurs to me when i hear stories like this, that i am absolutely invested in gender stereotypes and biology.

ultimately, nothing matters, but to see gender treated as something plastic is to gaze into a chasm of horror (at least for someone, like me, whose pathetic identity is 99% invested in being a dude).

Cross dressing? No problem! Drag queens and kings? No problem? Tweaking gender stereotypes through performance? No problem! Cool even. I am a beast, but I like to mince, and I like the disconnect between the two. Let's muck around with gender roles! Yay!

Tweaking gender stereotypes through...surgery? Ok, I've reached the point where I feel like a bigot, and it bothers me a bit. that is all. wouldn't call for a jihad against poor (insert pronoun here) or try to make their already complicated life any worse...

THANK YOU, BYTEMITE!!!!

That was my reaction exactly. How does this offend any of you? What EXACTLY is your problem with it? (Be specific)

If someone doesn't want to be a man or a woman, so what? Are you worried that they're going to pass it on to their offspring? Good luck with that! Are you afraid you might catch it, like you might catch "the gay" if that's made legal? What is it that you find so offputting about this? If this isn't YOUR husband or wife, or someone YOU are expected to have sex with (or not, in this case), then what the fuck? What difference does it make?

Shall we put a global ban on giant fake tits, then? After all, isn't that "tweaking gender stereotypes through surgery"?

I like that you're self-aware about it, and honest. Since you're not looking to put any restrictions on this person's life choices and gender identification, even theoretically, that's really as much of a reaction as one can realistically demand.

I find the concept of clinging to gender interesting, though. Is your emotional reaction one of.. I guess, fear that something is being taken away from you and your gender by creating alternative options? (I say emotional because your rational reaction seems quite separate from that.)

And I have to ask: Is "mincing" anything like swanning about? Not that I'd judge; I'm just curious about whether "mincing" means over on YOUR side of the pond what it generally means on MY side.

Exactly how I feel. It has nothing to do with my life, and I just hope he-she is happy Seems like a kind of confused, unhappy person, is all I think, after going through all of that. But it's his-her business, not mine, and he-she might well be a really nice person if I were to meet him-her.

PN, go to hell. I'm well aware facts mean nothing to you, but I'm not a lesbian...I'm married, remember? For 30+ years, and I still love him dearly. Can you say the same?

Oh, and you forgot any kind of "Jew" slur in smearing me...you're slipping...

Good discussion.

And yes, SUBJECTIVELY, I'd likely be a little freaked out if this man/woman were part of my family. But then, OBJECTIVELY, *I'M* not going home with him/her, so who cares? Just have to remember to buy unisex or gender-neutral gifts for the holidays. :)

kwicko, re: fake boobies. they are gross, but they do not really bother me, and are not really spot on for this issue. they don't really cross the great divide of gender so much as ridiculously emphasize a pre-existing gender characteristic. not a blurring of a line, but a thickening of it. still rather tacky in my opinion.

its an emotional reaction, and one probably better left unexplored (unless i really want to gross myself out, and others). i confess an absolutely fucked up relationship with gender. on one hand, i conform to, and cherish, masculine gender stereotypes (i am easily mistaken for a neanderthal). on the other hand, i'm mincing and have the tastes of a 6 year old girl. sometimes i delight in the incongruity; sometimes it makes me uncomfortable.

to see physical gender, not gender roles, reduced to something plastic and fluid through the medium of surgery is surreal. my gut tells met that if reflects upon me, while my brain tells me i am an idiot. i dunno, i can only liken my reaction to what a tea partier must feel when someone burns the american flag.

Ahem. I beg to differ. As Exhibit A, may I present to you...

Leslie.

Oh, hell, be what you are, and enjoy life. It's too short to get worked up about the little stuff. Hell, I've skipped across the warehouse before, just for the hell of it, and BECAUSE it would look so incongruous of me, a 6'8", 260-pound giant, to do such a silly thing.

Good analogy. Believe it or not, that actually makes your point clearer to me. *I* am uncomfortable with burning the flag; I've often said there's exactly one thing that could make me burn and American flag: a law against doing so. To my way of thinking, you don't burn down the Constitution to save a flag, and burning a flag doesn't desecrate the Constitution.

Anyway, carry on mincing; my lunch hour is over, and I've got to skip back to work! :)

good god kwicko, i take back everything i said about fake boobies. FAKE BOOBIES MUST BE TEH BANNED!!!!1

the thought that a dude would want them for himself, as opposed to for his lady friend, never really occurred to me (even though I casually know a tranny who has them). so, great, there's an intermediate step between swishing a little and removing your hank. wow.

Now THAT picture grosses me out! That's one sad, screwed-up person, from just the looks of it. Maybe they're a nice person to know, but I'm afraid I'd be turned off by (his?) appearance. So I guess I'm not the free thinker I'd like to believe.

Being aware of what you feel, Mincing, is a good thing...and in an issue such as this, may be all that's necessary. Discovering we have attitudes we might not agree with philosophically is always good: a widening of our self-awareness. But to go beyond that is a choice I would reserve for important things, which I don't this person represents. JMHO

That's Leslie Cochran, local pseudo-celebrity, homeless hobo, and all-around pain in the Austin PD's ass. He runs for mayor every few years, and actually does pretty well. :) And yes, those are REAL fake tits. He likes to flaunt them. And he really likes wearing thongs. [shudder]

But the point is, he's harmless enough, and actually a pretty funny guy. Damned freaky to look at, though!

And by the rants on his signs, I always figure this is really who PN is...

I wonder, is it fair to put Norrie May-Welby in the same category as Leslie Cochran? From what little I know of the former, they are an unhappy person trying to find a way to fit into their skin; you have portrayed the latter as PN with boobs.

Anyway, Kwicko, you sick bastard, I now believe in hell, and am sure you have earned your place in it. ;)

Wow. In the second picture, Leslie has some nice legs. Actually, the body in general is pretty nice. The first picture seems to have been taken in winter, and I hope Leslie got back out on his exercise routine.

Maybe it's my lack of attraction to either gender that allows me to see someone like Leslie and go: "Hmm. Anyway, what's for dinner?"
