Just a personal preference, I hate it! What is it with actors and beards suddenly? Can't they think for themselves? Last time it was buzz cuts (and Harrison Ford looked AWFUL!), now this. I thought it was women who were ruled by fashion. Shees...

Nikiiiiiiiiiiii,

If a man grows a beard--and he's not a fan of the Back Street Boys--at least 50% of the reason he's doin' it is 'cause he's sick to death of shaving his face every day of his life. Shaving a face is like shaving about 4 knees and you gotta do it every day or you start looking like a bum. Jon has had EXACTLY the same look for ten years on The Daily Show--a few years ago he started going a little grey, but that's it.

"Ruled by fashion?" Am I missing the joke? Why the heck do people attach such overpowering significance to what celebrities do? As if they don't do things for EXACTLY the same reason anyone else does a thing? He grew a beard. Which is to say, he stopped shaving his chin.

Facial hair is one of the few areas men are allowed to vary "the uniform." Let the guy grow a beard, already! Sheesh.

(Been catching up on episodes of Rescue Me, so I hope you will forgive any undue volatility in my post--does that happen to you? You read a book or watch a tv show or something and it starts to seep into the way you express yourself?)

HKC - After a short while, though, the beard becomes almost as much a pain in the ass as the shaving was. You have to keep it trimmed, you STILL have to shave all around it, and you have to shape it and groom it. So it's work in its own way, too.

Me? I'm fine with him having it, or not. I've grown the same one myself a time or seven.

Yeah, HK, you're right. I should know from Jim...he grows a beard for a while, shaves it off, shaves his HEAD for a while, grows it back...it's gotten to the point where I don't even notice anymore. Jim is Jim.

The "fashion" remark was just that...right now celebreties are growing beards to save their soul it seems, they're sprouting up all over. And it just WAS the buzz cut, which looked awful on all but the youngest of them.

I guess guys have every right to follow fashion as much as women...me, I like a clean face and the longest hair I can find...one reason I love Michael Douglas; he's never given in and cut it!

So it's just personal preference, and I understand about shaving. We women could tell you a thing or two about shaving legs and underarms...at least I could up until ten years ago or so. Now: who cares? I don't have to wear nylons and high heels anymore...yipee!

I was mostly teasing...slow news day, couldn't find much serious stuff, and I had just seen "the beard" the day before.

I love him however he looks; he has THE most mobile face, and it's half his talent for humor, the way he uses it.

The BRAIN, on the other hand, I agree with 100%. It's a good thing he's not a serious social commentator, he's MUCH more effective this way and gets away with a lot more, as well.

I saw him semi-serious on Orally's show, and he blew me away. I knew he was smart as a whip, but hearing him say it like it is to Orally was wonderful. And they actually seem to somewhat LIKE each other--tho' that could have been on-air nicey-nicey, I dunno. But it was wonderful.

I've got a crush, too, I must admit. I like Colbert (and even wear a WristStrong on my busted wrist--hey, you never know!), but nobody holds a CANDLE to Stewart!

One of the things that makes me love him is I swear, I don't think he takes himself seriously! There's a boyish charm about him that lets him get away with an awful lot.
