It's a shame that comes from HuffPost; I never use them as a cite because they will be immediately disregarded. The most I ever do is read to see what's interesting, then check it out elsewhere to see if it's valid.

But it doesn't change the fact that he's right on, tho', absolutely. And it's nice to see someone with an individual position who's willing to speak up and say what's right.

It's not a Democrat vs. Republican thing, or even a Liberal vs. Conservative thing. It appears to be individuals making a choice and speaking their minds. Members of both parties are taking opposing positions with each other.

However, when you get the top 3 Democrats in America flaring-up the issue, what do you expect? The whole country is now engaged and invested in this thing. Personally, I think it's a bit silly. The project was moving along on its' own, and there was virtually no national coverage of it, most people in America didn't even know about it. Obama weighed in, then Reid, then Pelosi, then Howard Dean, and lots of Republicans as well. There are almost no un-decideds" on this issue, which is rare and amazing. It shows how strongly people feel about it.

Obama never commented on it until AFTER Fox had been going on about it all day, every day, for weeks on end. It seems silly to try to pretend that the news channel that the right is so very proud of ("We're Number ONE!") had nothing to do with trying to make a small, local non-issue into a giant controversy.

All of this is aimed at taking attention away from the fact that John Boehner has stated publicly that if he becomes Senate Majority Leader, he wants to raise the Social Security retirement age and cut benefits. And it's also being used to deflect attention from the Republicans arguing AGAINST tax cuts and incentives for the middle class while arguing FOR gigantic tax giveaways to the richest of the rich.

The GOP is desperate for anything to take the public eye off their disastrous policies, and since Fox is completely in the pocket of them (and vice-versa), they're only too happy to join in and help redirect that public eye.

Well, I think the Democrats have just as much invested in taking the public's eye off the issues, if it comes to that.

On the other hand, this was an issue fussed over for quite some time before Obama spoke up, and the others spoke up after him. That's the fact. He wouldn't have spoken up, nor would any of the others, if it hadn't already been made and issue and the flames fanned from the right.

I don't think it represents how strongly people feel nearly as much as it represents upcoming elections and people trying to figure out which side will get them the most votes.

I'm impressed that Norquist spoke up as he did, given he's president of taxpayer advocacy group Americans for Tax Reform and a member of the board of directors of the National Rifle Association and the American Conservative Union. He isn't running for anything so he's free to speak his mind, but that his mind is that way is surprising and gratifying.

Christie being a Republican is also lovely to hear; he’s not up for re-election so it’s safe, but again, to have him break with the majority is gratifying.

The Dems aren’t looking too good on this one, but they definitely didn’t start it, and have been boxed into a corner by it, with elections coming up. It’s neat that Republicans will speak their own mind, given that it’s usually the Dems who are the “herding cats” bunch and the Reps tow the line almost exclusively. It’s unrealistic to say the top 3 Dems caused the flare-up, as it was flared up quite some time before that. I posted the chronology elsewhere, but here’s an excerpt of the timeline:
Quote:

Dec. 8, 2009: The Times publishes a lengthy front-page look at the Cordoba project. "We want to push back against the extremists," Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the lead organizer, is quoted as saying. Two Jewish leaders and two city officials, including the mayor's office, say they support the idea, as does the mother of a man killed on 9/11. An FBI spokesman says the imam has worked with the bureau. Besides a few third-tier right-wing blogs, including Pamela Geller's Atlas Shrugs site, no one much notices the Times story.

Dec. 21, 2009: Conservative media personality Laura Ingraham interviews Abdul Rauf's wife, Daisy Khan, while guest-hosting "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox. In hindsight, the segment is remarkable for its cordiality. "I can't find many people who really have a problem with it," Ingraham says of the Cordoba project, adding at the end of the interview, "I like what you're trying to do."

Fox News did a segment with Daisy Khan, Executive Director of the American Society of Muslim Advancement about the “mosque”. After the segment — and despite the front-page Times story — there were no news articles on the mosque for five and a half months, according to a search of the Nexis newspaper archive.

May 6, 2010: After a unanimous vote by a New York City community board committee to approve the project, the AP runs a story. It quotes relatives of 9/11 victims (called by the reporter), who offer differing opinions. The New York Post, meanwhile, runs a story under the inaccurate headline, "Panel Approves 'WTC' Mosque." Geller is less subtle, titling her post that day, "Monster Mosque Pushes Ahead in Shadow of World Trade Center Islamic Death and Destruction." She writes on her Atlas Shrugs blog, "This is Islamic domination and expansionism. The location is no accident. Just as Al-Aqsa was built on top of the Temple in Jerusalem." (To get an idea of where Geller is coming from, she once suggested that Malcolm X was Obama's real father. Seriously.)

That’s where it began, where it got fueled, and how it became such a big thing.

What the fuck is he even talking about? "That site" doesn't belong to all Americans and all faiths. It's two and a half fucking blocks away! St. Peter's and St. Paul's are both RIGHT ON THE CORNER OF GROUND ZERO. If you want the site to really be for "all faiths", you might better get something besides Roman Catholics into the area.

"People ought to be able to worship as they see fit," eh? Well, except that the white people and Christians get to worship right here directly adjacent to Ground Zero, and the black, brown, and Muslim people really need to go 80 blocks away or more, so the rest of us won't be creeped out by them.

That's the argument Howard Dean just made. He made more sense when he was just screaming "Heeeeyaahhhhh!"

Sorry, but Dean is dead wrong on this issue.

Raptor, TERRORISTS attacked us. They happened to be Muslim. Many, many Christians have done horrible things here in this very country, from killing doctors who go against their beliefs on abortion to downright terrorist acts. Do you hate all Christians because of it?

Second, the MUSLIM place of worship was right there, too, two blocks from "Ground Zero", it had been for many years. If the Christian churches lost THEIR leases on the land where they are, obviously it would be okay with you for them to buy another piece of land and build a new church to replace the one they lost, right?

This ISN'T EVEN A CHURCH! It's a community center with many amenities which also happens to have a small PRAYER ROOM. I'll keep reminding you of that no matter how much you want to forget it and envision some gigantic, minaret-shrouded "Muslim Mosque" on the cite. It's not a mosque. It's not a place of worship. It's a community center, within which, among many other things, is a prayer room because Muslims have to pray several times a day and because they lost their ACTUAL mosque nearby.

That is the reality you choose to ignore. Go on ignoring it, but don't pretend here that anything else is true, because it's not.

The Ku Klux Klan was formed by fundamentalist Christians. Shall we ostracize all Christians because of the actions of a few? Should blacks hate all white people because of what a few of them did to blacks? Should we not let white people build churches in predominantly black areas, or even NEAR those areas, because the wounds are still too raw?

You guys really do want to have it both ways. You don't want anyone - especially the big bad gubmint and the black President - to tell YOU what to do, but you damn sure want to tell everyone ELSE what to do, don't you? And now you want that big, intrusive government poking its nose into the finances of people whose only "crime" is not worshipping your lily-white god.

Hmm.

All the characterisation of the situation from the conservative side seems to have dried up and retreated... We're left here with what sounds like quite a silly and sad furore. The motivations sound quite innocent and harmless - my only remaining apprehension is the thought that they are using this centre (and its vicinity) to make a positive statement about Islam, and improve Islam's image. Which - I wish they would have chosen more modest objectives. I wouldn't at all wish to deny them a prayer room, especially after they've lost a mosque nearby .

Hmm :-(

It's not personal. It's just war.

Stop it. This idiotic game of equivocation is beyond absurd. You're not fooling or convincing anyone.

It's a waste of time to even attempt to go over, for the billionth time, the ways Islam is far and away more violent and evil than any other modern religion. It's not even worth discussing, it's so lopsided.
The existing mosque isn't the issue. It's not a post 9/11 victory symbol for radical Islam, like the Cordoba MOSQUE is. And for cryin' out loud, stop calling it a 'community center'. Dear Zeus, you're making a fool out of yourself.

Or, in other words, it's "not even worth discussing" because you've got no facts to back your claims. Every single death in Iraq since 2003 is a "Christian" death, because the Commander in Chief of this nation was a Christian when he ordered the invasion of Iraq.

It IS a community center. Sorry you can't accept that. Brigham Young University *IS* a real college, even if it has a church on its campus. A community center with a prayer room doesn't become a mosque, any more than a hospital with a chapel becomes a church. Navy ships have chapels, right? Are they churches? How many of our churches attacked Iraq and Afghanistan, then, before declaring "Mission Accomplished"?

Of course it's debatable. We've been debating it. The fact that you can't find anything which supports your opinion, except more opinions (all of them misguided), doesn't change the fact that the proposed building is a community center, not a mosque.

So you keep saying. But you saying it doesn't make it so. Have you not learned that yet? You don't have the magical power to wish things into fact by the power of your imagination.

And, wow. Now I hate the entire "West", huh? Because I believe the Constitution applies to all Americans, I hate not only America, but THE ENTIRE WESTERN CIVILIZATION. That's a reach, even for your unusually low standards.

You're ignorant on the naming of the Cordoba mosque, ignorant on the practice of Islam putting religious structures at the locations which hold great significance to those they wish to dominate. ( And if you yammer on about them taking over athe Burlington Coat Factory, instead of admitting this for what it is, then it's clear to me you're too fucking stupid or simply being an ass to explain any further )

That location is the former Burlington Coat Factory; I'm not making that up. Look it up; it's a fact. You *THINK* you know why they want to name it something, but again, you've offered nothing but a cut-n-paste snippet from Newt Gingrich, a known and admitted cheat and liar who was run out of Congress by his own party!

You have a lot of OPINIONS on what this is all about, but you have zero facts. All you keep putting up is the things you've heard others say on right-wing talk shows. None of it has been fact-checked, and you know it.

But rather than admit that I could have a disagreement with your opinion, you again resort to nothing but petty name-calling, stamping your feet like a petulant child because I won't just give up and agree with you, despite the fact that you've offered nothing factual on this issue at all.

On this matter, make no mistake. I want you to go fuck yourself long and hard, as well as anyone who agrees with you. I got no use for you.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

That's just it. Your pea sized brain doesn't get that this isn't a REPUBLICAN / Democrat issue. You're just making it one, because you have such a limited view of the world.

And yes, you're scared shitless of being called 'intolerant ' of Muslims, or any other perceived minority, regardless of how guilty they are. Funny, I never said you were scared of offending Republicans, but that's the pathetic tact you took, to avoid the real issue here. Standard, right on queue.

I know more about these muslims than you do, obviously.

Yes, me saying it makes it so.

Yes, you hate freedom and western civilization. That's self evident.

I've never offered any cut/ paste from Newt Gingrich on this matter, so YOU don't know what the hell you're talking about.

I'm not offering my OPINION on the matters here, it's FACT. That you don't LIKE the facts, because in your simpleton's head, if I'm for it, you must automatically be against it. That's all this is to you. No matter which thread I post in, you're right there, johnny on the spot, to take the opposite view point. Screw the facts, never mind the history, or even bother looking up shit yourself, all YOU'RE interested in is perpetuating a meaningless pissing match on the internet, so you feel like you've accomplished SOMETHING in your life.

I'm sorry that others knowing more than you makes you feel uncomfortable, and you feel the need to lash out at others. That's more of a you problem.

And everything I've brought up can be verified, if you feel the need to. Real life conversations don't incorporate cut/ paste articles, and I do tire of that game here. You'd just dismiss what ever I say, out of hand, because it's from FOX, or what ever the hell excuse you can think of, instead of dealing w/ the facts.

Having dealt young earth Creationists has taught me that there are just some zealots who, no matter how hard you try, how patient you are, how much evidence you toss their way, they simply will have nothing of it, and will ignore, ignore and ignore, because they simply cannot handle the truth.

It's too painful for them to consider they just might be wrong. You are exactly like those nuts.
