Fair enough.
I suppose I'm more willing to let religious bigotry slide because of my general disdain for most religions. Dressing up to demonstrate your faith in God, Allah, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster is just silliness to me.
Most other bigotry does tend to set me off, though.

So, okay, I might not be the best judge of this.

That's fine, AS LONG AS YOU'RE WILLING TO LET IT SLIDE FOR *ALL* RELIGIONS EQUALLY.

Would FauxNews have been so quick to scream about this had the guy pointed to Jews, Christians, or (gasp!) BLACKS in his little screed? Would they have rushed to his defense if he'd used the words "white people" instead of "Muslims"?

Would anyone have a problem with his firing if he'd said he gets uncomfortable any time he sees "blacks" dressed in their "black garb" on a plane?

You'll find no arguments here, we're in complete agreement. NPR ought to be unbiased, but it is not. So I use it only for classical music, science friday, and the occasional show like car talk. For that matter, our universities ought to be as unbiased as our public schools are (in theory) enforced to be.

You SAY they are biased. Is there any evidence to back those claims? Other than the claims of other conservatives, I mean. If NPR has a policy of not voicing an opinion on the stories they cover, is that not the definition of unbiased reporting?

I disagree with your characterization...but assuming you are correct...

Do you support what you claim the Tea Party and the Republicans are doing? If you think its wrong, then you should be an the 'Save Juan Williams' express.

And he's a liberal...why should I work so hard to save a fella from your camp? Because what happened to Juan Williams is wrong. Its not some kind of 'but look what everybody else did moment'. This is about NPR and Juan Williams.

I like Juan Williams. I disagree with little of what he says but he makes excellent points and argues his side very well and afterwards...he does not hate our side and we don't hate him. Maybe there is no room for reason at NPR, but I prefer liberals I can argue with to ones who storm off the stage.

I think your forgetting that he was making a larger point. His opinion was that such generalizations are "wrong". What a handful of folks are fussing about is that he confessed his gut feeling, one shared by most Americans. Kind of goes along with the idea that profiling is wrong...but strip searching 'round trip to see grandkids Granny' while ignoring 'one-way ticket Pakistan-stamped passport Muhammed' makes no sense. It shows there is no easy resoltion here, but step one is not firing the folks willing to confess their feelings.

Uhhh, while I know of no instances of Fox firing anyone for being on any other station, they have fired at least one person for their comments
Quote:

Bill O’Reilly he invited Fox News contributor, and Columbia University professor, Marc Lamont Hill to discuss the right-wing's unhinged response to Obama's presidency. Hill, one of Fox News' few liberal contributors, has been fired for his political views. Apparently, right-wing purifiers were calling for his head, so Roger Ailes showed Hill the door.
I’m sure you abhor whoever this guy was (I don’t know personally) and have terrible things to say about him, but that doesn’t change the fact that Fox fired him for comments he made.

Sig, I fear that was a waste of typing time, what you posted. You must have noticed how many times Kane, Wulf and others have claimed something is fact, when it is only their opinion. I think the blinders are firmly attached when it comes to that one, and no amount of reasoning is ever going to change it. What I love is the crack at me that because I say “I agree” or “Right on” to a comment, it means I’m saying “that’s absolutely the truth”. So I don’t think there’s an ability to differentiate between someone else stating an opinion (which is viewed as the person stating “that’s fact!) and their stating “that’s fact!” actually being their opinion. Nice try, tho’.

CTTS, thank you. I agree. I, too, am bigoted against organized religion, but I don’t see wearing the dress of your society as dressing up to demonstrate their faith in Allah. That would mean that anyone who wears a sari is dressing up to demonstrate their faith in some Hindu god or other. I have no problem with people wearing the attire of their culture, and don’t see wearing Muslim garb as necessarily attached to Islam, tho’ for some no doubt it is; Muslim women who wear the veil are often forced to because of societal norms, and that has nothing to do with religion (tho’ for some I’m sure it does, as well). I think it’d be a sad day when everyone had to dress the way “we” think they should. I wear saris, sarongs, Moroccan clothing...I wonder what that makes me?
Quote:

their analysts and reporters from expressing personal opinions on-air
I didn’t know that. It’s a shame—and I think not really valid, as I’ve heard “opinions” expressed there with no resulting problems...I think that might be something which is selectively enforced, possibly? Nonetheless, if it’s in the contract, it’s their right to enforce it whenever they choose.

Certainly I agree that
Quote:

it's ludicrous to think that anyone would ever be fired from Fox for bigotry
, given what I’ve heard from there and what their own commentators give out with. Just the one remark that Obama is someone who hates white people is a pretty good example, and they loved that one!
Quote:

He said that Williams wasn't expressing an opinion, just explaining how he felt
SERIOUSLY??? That’s amazing; I’d like to hear him explain the difference, I really would...
Quote:

Do you support what you claim the Tea Party and the Republicans are doing? If you think its wrong, then you should be an the 'Save Juan Williams' express.
Jezus Hero, that’s just plain stupid! In other words, if I disagree with the Tea Party, I can only be in favor of Williams, right? Talk about your black-and-white reasoning! I’m perfectly capable of being against the Tea Party and Republican POLITICIANS are doing right now—and not just for reasons of bigotry on their part—without agreeing with Williams or thinking terrorists are right in what they do or anything ELSE. Wow. That’s a weird comparison...
Quote:

This is about NPR and Juan Williams
What I posted about was in counterpoint to YOUR statement that
Quote:

Liberals are all for Free Speech as long as someone else pays and you only say things they agree with
You can’t backtrack now and say it’s “only” about Williams and NPR, that is preposterous!

I should state that I don’t know Williams and have never heard him speak. It’s his right to “free speech when he has a contract he broke, which gave them absolute right to fire him, when it is characterized as his free speech being “stifled”.

Myself, I prefer conservatives I can “debate”...arguments do nobody any good, and making stupid statements (I assume you’re referring to the incident on The View) which are intended to cause a furor isn’t debating and shouldn’t be tolerated without refutation and condemnation.

In essence, I think NPR was legally justified in firing him, given their statement:
Quote:

"His remarks on The O'Reilly Factor this past Monday were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR,"
That doesn’t mean I think it’s right. I can see how it would undermine his credibility as an IMPARTIAL analyst, but as I don’t see NPR as being impartial, I think it was the last straw for them and an excuse:
Quote:

Williams' presence on the largely conservative and often contentious prime-time talk shows of Fox News has long been a sore point with NPR News executives. His status was earlier shifted from staff correspondent to analyst after he took clear-cut positions about public policy on television and in newspaper opinion pieces.
Ergo, he’s done such things before and apparently they cut him SOME slack. They chose not to this time; that’s their right. I can see how someone making the remark about Muslims when getting on a plane definitely undermines his credibility as impartial, but I don’t think it undermines his “credibility as a news analyst”, but if it hit the news, then the audience of NPR (given that’s probably a very different audience from Fox) would become aware of it and might view him as biased.

Dunno who you mean by
Quote:

he does not hate our side and we don't hate him
—conservatives? Americans in relationship to Muslims? Fox News viewers? I don’t think that statement has any validity, given that I think he remarks weren’t about any “side”, just about how he felt on that issue.

I disagree, and I do think he's giving in to fear, which is after all what the terrorists WANT.

You'll have to prove to me that "most Americans" share the same feelings, I know I don't, nor do Choey or Jim, the only other two Americans I can ask. I just flew on four airplanes to and from the Gulf, and yes, I saw people in Muslim dress. I didn’t think twice about it, any more than I did about anyone else dressed in any other way. I went through serious security—they even took away my bottle of ice tea (which is cute, because it forces anyone carrying anything on a plane to buy something from the vendors inside the security area!). Luckily I had thought to pack a small container of ice-tea mix so I could get water on the plane and mix my own, but they did a very thorough job, making me take off my Boot and everything. The idea that any terrorist can sneak through is pretty minimal, and certainly if any terrorist were serious about doing something, he wouldn’t dress as a Muslim! So giving in to unreasoned fear like that is exactly what the terrorists want to have happen, and we’ve done a really good job of accommodating them, as Williams did in encouraging that fear.

As to "profiling is wrong" but "strip searching..." isn't the issue, as far as I can see. First off, no passenger knows if someone is flying on a one-way ticket Pakistan-stamped passport", so that invalidates that. I know of no instance when anyone NOT Muslim-looking was stripped searched while someone Muslim looking ws ignored. Strip searching someone in Muslim garb IS profiling. And lastly, that’s not what Williams said, he said he would be nervous if he saw someone IN MUSLIM GARB, only that, nothing else. It’s an incorrect corollary to profess otherwise.

And I would add that "confessing his gut feelings" only serves to justify OTHERS feeling that way, which helps spread the fear the terrorists want us to feel in the first place. People hear someone "in authority" say things like that, it justifies them feeling that way too, when what we should be doing is calming fears, explaining things like what I just did instead of encouraging irrational "terror".

His "larger point" was idiotic as well. His pointing out that Muslims in "Muslim garb" make him uncomfortable was just a stupid thing to say, considering that all 19 of the 9/11 hijackers were dressed as normally as anyone else, as was the "shoe bomber", as was the "underpants bomber"...

Also, profiling based on names doesn't get you anywhere, either. Unless you think Richard Reed, Timothy McVeigh, and Eric Rudolph sound like good old-fashioned Islamic names.

Ha ha. Now it's " bigotry " to want illegals to follow the law and stop freeloading off the public dole ? (eg: education and healthcare )

You're right, I won't admit any 'bigotry', because I've shown none.

I agree. Money talks.

It talks in this election. For example, now that the health insurances got what they wanted out of the Dems (mandated insurance) they have shifted their donations to the Repubs to drop the "onerous" regulations that were part of the package. (Oh, goody: We'll have regulation-free mandated insurance.)

I really dislike "philanthropists". Bill Gates, for example. Rather than sinking his money into local African development like wells and roads, mosquito nets, clinics, and cheap (patent-free) anti-retrovirals... or simply GIVING his money to the local poor and letting THEM decide what they need... he's pushing for AIDS vaccines: yet another high-tech, patented, centralized, profit-sucking solution. Soros is similar. He really likes microcredit, although REAL improvement doesn't come from individuals clawing their way up the ladder but cooperative action to to bring down the corrupt governments which create misery.

You really are slow on the uptake, aren't you?

I didn't say anything about Fox *needing* handouts; I intimated that Fox is *giving* handouts. They're giving millions to the GOP, as is the Chamber of Commerce (via foreign contributions from places like Saudi Arabia, India, and China, among others). And, according to you, that makes the GOP their "bitches", and they'll do whatever they're told by their new "masters".

Are you saying that an employer should NOT have the capability of firing an employee who doesn't live up to their end of a contract?

So, what of corespondents who wish AIDS upon GOP Senators ( and their grandkids ) ? Not held to the same criteria, I see. I bet if it had been against some Dem Senator, they'd be fired, and lawsuits filed. But because a Lib said it ? Meh, no biggie.

And there's far more than 'one or two' folks in the virtual ocean of AGW 'believers' who dispute the entire issue. Some of them are those who were on the forefront of this cockamamie concept from the get go. They waited, saw the evidence, and now have come to the conclusion that, what ever influence mankind has on the global climate, it's too minute to even worry about.

I love how you confuse carbon dating to radiometric dating, just like the fundies you try to accuse me of being. *laughs*

NPR has egg all over its face, and Juan has been justified w/ a big new contract. I think that's pretty much the general consensus.

Juan Williams reminds me very much of Rappy. Rappy believes that Muslims in NYC have only one possible reason for building a community center: to insult and threaten him personally. Mr. Williams thinks Muslims choose to wear "Muslim garb" purely to identify themselves as The Big Scary Evil.

"...I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Clearly, Mr. Williams is unable to understand that a large part of the world does not dress like the average American.

Dude, it's just how a whole big bunch of people dress. They come from someplace different, they have a different fashion history. Really, that's all it is. Chill the fuck out already, and go visit someplace other than Faux News so your mind can expand out of that teeny tiny hole it lives in.

I did get to put the smack on someone Friday though, I had to fill out some bullshit card for yet another change in our insurance - and have you noticed that you're getting a packet detailing the changes in your plan like ONCE A FEKKIN WEEK now, as they rapidly change up shit so you can never know what they might or might not cover ?

Anyhow, under "Race" I put "Human" - and when they complained, told em it was technically true, and damned if I was gonna change it, cause the idea of such artificial divisions was asinine from day fuckin one.

It's true. I, like Juan, was born a poor black child.

But seriously, if anyone takes the time to see why and where Muslims build their mosques, the WTC Mosque is exactly as it's been described. A victory mosque for Islam.

Even most Muslims, in and outside of the US, agree on this matter. And they wish the location was moved.

Why can't you ?

You're incredulity over the facts not withstanding, this has zero to do with FOX news, so drop the phony, straw man act.

As reported in the New York Times earlier this week, Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal, best-known for his rejected offer of a $10 million check to Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has come out against the Ground Zero mosque. Alwaleed’s Kingdom Foundation has been a financial patron of Feisal Abdul Rauf, the proposed mosque’s “spiritual guide,” donating more than $200,000 to the “Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow” program run by Rauf’s American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA).

So, me, Juan Williams and most Americans are 'bigoted a-holes ' ??

How's about you get the hell over yourself, drop the childish, idiotic moral superiority shtick, and wake the hell up.

America is the land of the free, but not the duped. ( save for you )

LOL! I'm picturing Rappy and his hero Juan Williams visiting the Middle East, growing beards and wearing robes and turbans because they're so eager not to offend the locals the way the Muslims offend them by wearing "their" clothing in the US.

Of course, Rappy and Juan would also learn the local customs and language, because they're such accommodating and culturally open kinds of guys...

That's a fun little fantasy land I just visited.

Exactly. One quote by a Muslim that marginally agrees with Rappy's fucked up view, and suddenly he's the champion of THE OPINION OF THIS ONE MUSLIM. Funny how he never listened to a Muslim before, or even bothered to meet one. Funny that he'll take the opinion of this one (press reported) individual over the myriad of people of different faiths who actually live in New York. You know, the American citizens.

Still haven't bothered to meet a Muslim Rappy? Haven't actually sat down to have a conversation with someone who's different from you? Tsk-tsk. That'd be too hard, wouldn't it? Might make you have to THINK...

Rappy's so transparent. I can tell exactly how high his masters told him to jump.

Let's see, lessons to take away from the above posts...

Auraptor believes he knows the thoughts and motivations of a whole group of people, though he never actually speaks to any of them.

Auraptor judges this group of people based on his biases and fears. You know, he pre-judges. As in prejudiced.

Auraptor holds up any single instance that supports his bigotry as proof that he is right about everything. Raplogic™ at work.

Auraptor firmly closes his eyes to anything that contradicts his prejudices.

Auraptor sees only in black and white: if one Muslim did something bad, then all Muslims must be feared and punished.

I don't have to talk to ANY of them , to know the results of polls and views of those who have plainly stated their view. ME talking to them, not talking to them, or vica versa , changes absolutely nothing.

I acknowledge those by how they act and what they say. I don't discount any of that merely because some ( like you ) may confused the radicals w/ the larger group of which they are a part.

I offer evidence and facts to back up my claims. I bring one item, up, you dismiss it, out of hand. I could repeat that, item by item, and you'd repeat your dismissal, each and every time, w/ out honestly acknowledging the sum of it all. End story, you can't handle the truth.

Anyway, back to the point. The thing I find alarming about the mentality of Juan Williams is how he is justifying and accepting his bigotry. Admitting he feels it is not the problem. He could have said: "I have this fear and I see that it's unreasonable and unfair. So instead of talking about where it came from, how about I focus on how I can overcome it?" A good conversation could follow. (But not on Faux News)

Instead, what Williams seems to be saying is: "I have this bigotry, but really I have it for good reason and it's just the right way to feel so I'm going to on feeling it."

It's especially sad seeing this come from a man who's discussed the bigotry of racism. I'd like to think he'd be capable of stepping outside his ignorance. Strike up a conversation with those be-robed folks on the plane, rather than sitting back and making up stories in your head about them.
