Hello,

I just learned there is no 4G industry standard... and the one group that officially defined 4G is being ignored.

So 4G means... whatever the seller decides it means. Be wary.

It's far more complicated than it seems. Back in the days of talk, the world was divided into two technologies, CDMA and GSM. This has developed into a two-network myth, where there are CDMA-based systems, and GSM-based ones. Really there are at least half a dozen technologies in a modern modem, and they're not really a relation to anything. Companies are just trying to keep customers.

The best bet is to get devices with the widest range of technologies for modems. Better yet if they can be either manually or automatically turned off so they're not all draining power at once.

Even 3G isn't a standard. Speeds vary, and 3G phones are not nec. compatible with one another. 4G only exists in cities, and there it can be patchy and pointless. These generation models for computer products have always been more marketing campaigns than real technologies.

As I understood it, the 4G "standard" is phones and wireless networks moving data at 100Mb/sec, and none of the U.S. networks come close.

Ah, I see the article listened to the same "How Stuff Works" podcast I did, because they make exactly the same points. :)

I liked this quote:

Quote:

"It's very misleading to make a decision about what's 4G based on speed alone," said Stephanie Vinge-Walsh, spokeswoman for Sprint Nextel. "It is a challenge we face in an extremely competitive industry."

Yeah. *Almost* as misleading as claiming your 3Mbps network is really "4G"... :)

Oh, and for the record (the world record, that is), scientists in Pisa, Italy ran an uninterrupted 12-hour experiment with throughput speeds of over 1.2 TERABITS per second. And we're wishing we had speeds up to a tenth of a gig per second...

Mike, you make a good point. If you actually measure speeds that networks deliver, it's often well short of what they promise. Your typical broadband is still delivering 56k, esp. on cellular.

4G means it gives you a Goddamned brain tumor 4 times faster than a regular phone.

Or 4Goddamned brain tumors for the price of 1Goddamned brain tumor.

No shit.

A 1G phone is at 2.5GHz, same freq as a microwave oven. 4G is 10GHz?
