So let's get away from "wedge issues" and focus on some REAL real world events, eh?
Quote:

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Thursday that congressional opposition makes the likelihood of closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "very, very low."

Gates' remarks at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee was the one of the clearest signs yet of the dim prospects for carrying out one of President Barack Obama's earliest executive orders: to shutter the facility where the U.S. military has detained suspected terrorists since 2002.

"I think we are in the position, frankly, the prospects for closing Guantanamo, the best I can tell, are very, very low given very broad opposition to doing that here in the Congress," Robert Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Notice it doesn't say Obama doesn't want to close Gitmo; rather "very broad opposition to doing that here in the Congress". Not that any of our righties will pay attention to that, they'll go on blaming Obama.

And before you say "why didn't he do it before?", same answer, as well as the fact that Obamatried to use His initial capital to go after some things nobody's had the guts to tackle before, like healthcare, DADT, rather than focus on Gitmo.

If wishes were horses...

He might want to, he might not. Ultimately he's a politician, and in my estimation he's been an ineffectual one. Possibly because I suspect he's been hamstringed by the Clintons. But his say-so is not necessarily indicative of his motives, actions would speak much louder.

I most freely grant you that, and I think he's a terribly ineffectual leader, too. The crack was just because so many righties wnat to blame him for everything under the sun, and I don't think he could have closed Gitmo with the Pentagon and Congress against him.

I do agree, also, that what he says may not be what he really wants to do, we've seen that so many times already!

It's not a wedge issue, but it's not a real world event, it's an ongoing situation, like Israel-Palestine, and it hasn't gone anywhere in a long time. Speaking of places we've been for a century. And then some.

As far as I'm concerned anything slightly news related should be allowed in the real world event section, even if it seems trivial or not really to be new. Something I like about this board is that it isn't heavily moderated, people are free to say what they like, and everyone polices themselves fairly well, sure there are some exceptions, but everyone does pretty well at self regulation, which most of society has a hard time doing. the only person who behaves in a disgustingly obnoxious fashion most of the time is Caneman and we all take it in stride. I've had it in for him ever since he said some really nasty things to Niki. But I like that we allow free speech here.

I was just nitpicking. We have whole threads here about cute cat pictures, and its not like we stay on topic or anything. Avoiding wedge issues is just a survival mechanism because it will eat up all your time. Fortunately, this isn't one of them.

It hasn't always been Kaneman. I could name a fair number of people who are still here that it has been in the past, but I won't for the sake of civility.

We move on, and get along. I don't have any problems with anyone here, and I've known most of them for a very kong time. Kaneman's attacks are ignore worthy, she's just trying to get a rise out of people. It's when she trolls really tragic events that I get annoyed. Lately she's been relatively good.

There are some users that I miss because they were more or less chased out of here, but some of them still appear on other parts of the site from time to time.

I might migrate there myself, I keep gnawing on it. A lot of these political issues are things we've been over many times, though there is definitely a lot that can be learned on this board.

Ahhh, Rion, that you say that makes me feel good; it means things have been less caustic since you came, apparently. Because, as DT said, it's gotten downright horrid here, and will from time to time, myself included. I've tried to back off to be at least civil, but some make no effort, and actually, a couple of those are missing right now or haven't been here as MUCH. In other words, "you ain't seen nothin' yet!" Just gird your loins for when it comes around, because in my opinion it's well worth sticking it out for the good conversations and the good people. And bear in mind that this site isn't just "not heavily moderated", it is essentially NOT moderated. Haken doesn't do anything unless it's brought to his attention vociferously, and it's damned rare. So you're on your own, and that's as much a good thing as it is a bad one.

You needn't have it in for Kane for how he goes after me; I hate to see you wasting one second or a single emotion on him. It's not just me, but I'm his favorite target it would seem, and have learned like the others that he's just not worth giving an instant's thought to.

I have nothing against non-real-world events, and have made the same arguments when others have complained about the posts not being "news" myself. I've put up more than my share, even. I was just bored with those the topics that were here yesterday, so searched around for what I consider some REAL news in hopes somebody might be interested. Call it a snark or two coming out of boredom.

Good points, all. I think that there's also an issue with number of threads, two Gitmo threads seems excessive, esp. since it's a tired topic, but we have different interests. You tend to like politics, and I don't. I'm probably outnumbered here, to me "robot on Jeopardy" was more of an event, but I think most of the board didn't agree.

I'll admit my psych posts are not real world events, it's just that I'm interested in the opinions of folks here on the issue. There's sort of a whole splinter of this forum that should have its own board called something like "Fighting the Alliance" of Big Damn Heroes or something.

Actually, I'll pass that on to Haken.

Nah, I haven't invested any energy in to disliking Caneman, who knows, I probably agree on some things with him/ I think we can find things on which we agree and disagree with everyone we meet, with some we agree more and with some we agree less, but all being people there has to be some common ground for all of us.
