The Berkeley city council, known for its forays into international affairs, has narrowly rejected a measure that would have welcomed freed Guantanamo Bay detainees to resettle in this California college town.

The resolution would have asked Congress to allow Guantanamo prisoners who have been cleared of wrongdoing to resettle in the U.S. — and invited "one or two" of them to live in Berkeley.

The measure lost in a 4-1 vote, with four abstentions, late Tuesday.

At least two other U.S. cities — Amherst and Leverett in Massachusetts — have approved similar resolutions aimed at clearing the way for Guantanamo detainees to come the U.S. after their release from the American detention facility in Cuba.

"These men have suffered immensely," said Cynthia Papermaster, who heads Berkeley No More Guantanamos. "It's the right thing for all U.S. citizens to say, 'We're sorry for what happened to you. If you want to come here, we have a place for you.'"

Papermaster, a Berkeley resident who asked the council's Peace and Justice Commission to consider the measure, said former detainees would be sponsored by volunteers and nonprofit groups, and no city money would be used to support them.

City Manager Phil Kamlarz recommended that the council take no action, saying "federal law explicitly prohibits the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States."

Sooo, I guess for all our "Free thinking", Berserkeley is prone to the same fear mongering as the rest of the nation. Bah. Cowards! I'm ashamed of them. I can only guess the four who abstained were too chicken to come out and vote FOR it. Cowards.

Go Massachusetts! I agree with Papermaster; we owe those who are innocent for what "we" put them through.

I think if they are found innocent they should probably go back home to their families, this whole thing sounds peculiar to me. But whatever.

Agreed.

Actually, I think they should just be let go. If the police had botched an arrest this badly and someone twisted their arm, they would have to give up completely. It's punishment for a job poorly done. Yes, it would set a lot of people free who, if they didn't hate the US govt. before, do now, but maybe next time the US govt. would learn to obey the law.

Hee, hee, hee; I agree, DT. I think they should have the choice, personally...as I said, I feel we owe them, so it's fair to give them a choice. Just my own opinion.

As to ANY government learning to obey the law...what have you been smoking?

Lol. True.

ETA: Sorrry for the thread title change shuffle, just trying to make title threads reflect subject of the thread.

ETA2: I see that's *three* Gitmo threads ATM. Seems excessive, don't ya think?

Only two of them are mine, and this one wasn't intended to be about Gitmo per se, it was about Berserkeley, usually known as such a forward-thinking and open bunch of nuts turning down the detainees. I found that amusing.

I didn't spot the third thread, but then I don't read them all. I look at the title, and yes, no problem with your title change. Out of curiosity, however, are you in 1.0? I've moved to 2.0, and it appears there you can't change the title (yaaaaay! No more PN bullcrap...at least, hopefully if 1.0 goes away eventually...

Interestingly, I came to 1.0 to change the title, and I can't "edit" my posts anymore. Izzat a glitch, or did Haken change something?

Really? only a bunch of hippies would even think those fucking dudes want to go hang out in berkely....hilarious.

DT: Ah, I see.

As to why they'd want to live in America, Berserkeley or anywhere else; we don't know they "despise" anything about us; these were people found INNOCENT of being involved in terrorism. We have lots and lots of Muslims in the Bay Area, and Berserkeley, by the way, is where the largest groups of Indians, Pakistania, Afghans and others live in the entire Bay Area. So I guess they don't "despise" it all that much. It's a really diverse culture over there; while S.F. itself is home to large groups of Chinese and Japanese, with some from the above ocuntries as well, those groups chose Berserekely instead.

Of course, we know our military didn't detain anyone who DIDN'T despise America and/or WASN'T a terrorist, do we? Naw, of course not...you betcha!

So, does that mean PN isn't allowed to post anymore? I mean, I don't like some of the things he puts up, but some are okay with me, and I don't think I like the idea of someone getting kicked off here, other forums sure, but Browncoats forum?
