Interesting.

The researchers say: "Why health status differs so dramatically in these two countries, which share much in terms of history and culture, is an unresolved puzzle.

"Given our finding of health differences between the US and England at young ages, a promising focus of future research - one that could help to elucidate the causes of poor health across the life course - is on health differences between countries at the earliest ages."

Public health experts suggested more generous holiday entitlements and more favourable working conditions in the UK might also play a part.

Well, and this is starting to change, too. Everywhere that McDonalds or Pizza Hut becomes popular, you're going to see a dramatic rise in obesity rates. And some of this is already bearing out.

Obesity was what sprung to mind when I first saw the article as well, but then I read this part:

Quote:

But despite looking, the researchers did not find any real evidence that differences in obesity, alcohol consumption or physical activity were to blame.

Also,

Quote:

Smoking may be a factor, but Dr Melissa Martinson and colleagues doubt it because even younger Americans who have not yet been exposed to decades of tobacco smoke appear to be in worse health than English counterparts.
And although a larger share of Americans are uninsured or under insured compared to populations in England or other European countries, even groups with good access to health insurance experienced worse health than people in England.

So it's more complicated than at first glance...

The work aspect doesn't make sense, though, because at young ages neither Americans or Brits are working. (Maybe I'm misunderstanding the age range here)

I imagine two things, I imagine exposure to more unhealthy food (and probably chemical additives). I also imagine more exposure to impacts from industry, partially because the pollution from china blows all the way across the ocean and some of it settles here, but pollution at home too.

You don't develop diabetes from workplace stress, you develop it from eating habits, though workplace stress can contribute to bad eating habits.

Are you saying the English are less exposed to unhealthy foods? I find that hard to believe.

Why do you care if someone else chooses to be fat...really? Should we just kill those with throid problems? Or just those that like Taco- Bell.....?

Kwicko, I formally condemn your mother for not aborting you. Yeah, I'm sure her brother was happy to have a son, but you are inexcusable....

There's also some debate over whatever ones notion of "health" is - remember, americas national concept of public health is still based on the pet theories of a madman who was clinically insane while in office as surgeon general...

And they change, too - remember, saturated fat was once "evil" and replaced with "healthy" trans-fats, and look how THAT turned out!

But the super-stress lifestyle does lead to poor eating habits and other health malaise not only psychological but also downright physical, too.

Also, I dunno if other countries have such a problem with High Fructose Corn Syrup, but here it's in EVERY DAMN THING, just recently I dumped yet another brand of bologna which had started adding it - WTF does it need to be in bologna for anyways, that's ludicrous!

I want to point out that diabetes type 1 and 2, also have a genetic componant, its not completely about eating too much, though that can hurry the genes along and sometimes cause people with no genetic vulnerability to get it. Did you know that Halle Barry has type 2 diabetes? And she's not fat at all. Just something to keep in mind.
