Why don't liberals just stop the b.s. and start burning books they don't like? Come "out-of-the-closet", so to speak.

They don't mind being socialists on a national scale... so why not just admit what you are?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Both sides are prone to book defacement and censorship. They are simply motivated by different factors and triggers.

Fahrenheit 451 might be worth reading for you.

THE ED SHOW!?! Are you SERIOUS?!?! Pathetic. Anyone who takes Schultz or anything he does seriously, or thinks he represents liberals, has about as many brain cells as those who take Glenn Beck seriously or think he represents conservatives!

It's also slanted as hell, so I'm glad it was short and didn't take much time to read:
Quote:

the litany of lefties actually calling for political figures to be killed somehow escape mention. No mention of lefty radio host Mike Malloy claiming that Republicans, those "evil sons-of-bitches," in his phrasing, "need to be murdered." No mention of Montel Williams begging Michele Bachmann to cut her own throat.
Those mentioned are of the same mentality as Schulz and just about as important, for one thing. For another, is it really necessary to list all the death threats, etc., by those on the right, to show that there are crazies on both sides who threaten people on the other side with harm, or death? To point to one side or the other (which it seems like only the hard-core righties here do, consistently) is absurd.

Mike Malloy used to be on Air America, obviously showing his prejudice, and was fired by them--maybe he was too "out there" for even them...

Do I even need to say anything about Montel Williams?

Stupid effort, Wulf, and everything in your post was nothing but partisan idiocy. As far as I'm concerned, the right is FAR more likely to start burning books...wasn't there some conservative preacher recently who... Oh, never mind. Someday you might consider reading things from a SOMEWHAT unbiased source, Wulf, rather than putting something idiotic up and trying to use it to make equally idiotic points.

Ayn Rand has some good ideas, but the end result of the affect of her philosophy on most of her followers is that they become self absorbed and manipulative, seeing others as auxiliary units of added value, rather than seeing human interactions as an economic relationship of give and take. Many of us have known people who, after they become Randers, are all "take take take." I don't think that it's really partisan. At some point I mean to dissect her works and try to figure out which parts steer folks wrong, and which are worth keeping.

Two words: Quran burnings. Anthony is correct, both sides do it. Any form of extremism can result in ignorance and foolishness.

Not overly fond of Ayn Rand myself. Her experiences seem to have made her pretty extreme, she doesn't even seem to like voluntary charity. As if you can't take care of yourself AND give a damn about society in general, and free marketing industry leaders agreeing to be honest and not sell snake oil will somehow take away from all the progress that they're achieving. Such as bombs, and bigger bombs.

But per that issue, of burning books, are you comparing this to the lone nut case in Florida, who has been universally condemned for his burning of the qu'ran ?

Here, is your John Galt.
http://www.alternet.org/story/145819/?page=entire
Oh yes, such a noble hero, indeed.

Not to mention she cribbed most anything useful from Garret and then mangled it beyond recognition with contradictory screeds borrowed in sound byte form from every fascist fuck the american capitalists were sucking up to at the time in preparation for and after their failed and abortive military coup in 1933, thank you Smedley Butler!

I had a couple of those dickheads try to pick a damn fight with me when I went to see Hanna with my ex, cause it's well known around here what my opinion of that sociopathic bitch and her fucking randroid jackboot lickers is, and despite not even realizing they were there, much less sayin word one to em - my mere EXISTENCE was such a threat and assault to the cowardly dicks (which is in keeping with their philosophy, actually, as Rand herself was exactly of the same mein) that they felt the need to come over and start some shit.

Only, Hop was also showing, and did I mention that most of the local parents are quite fond of me ?
Which was right handy in this case cause the usher who came over to sort it out was pretty blatantly siding with them (and seemingly hell bent on throwing me out), only to have over a dozen pissed off parents chewing his ear since all *I* was doing was buying popcorn.

The ONLY real problem John Galt had with the situation, in keeping with the rampant hypocrisy, deceit and sociopathy of Objectivism, was that HE was not in charge of it.

Period.

Is she dead? people talk about her in the past tense, I don't know anything about her except that she wrote a novel and also this book that you guys keep mentioning, I'm not much for informational books myself, with a few exceptions, if I'm going to read a book it needs a beginning, middle, end and charactors and a plot thank you.

What are her main philosophy points? All I've heard is that she's very self centered. Quick and easy description that doesn't have links in it anyone?

Riona: She's dead. Her books are predominantly novels, which espouse her personal philosophy of "Egoism" or "Objectivism" (depending on the source) - the idea that ONLY the übermensch are capable of dragging the world forward into the future, with the rest of the miserable proles holding them back, kicking and screaming. Her stories have plot, of a sort, and characters, however one-dimensional and wooden they may be, and beginnings, REALLY long middles, and ends.

Try "The Fountainhead" if you're willing. Or "Anthem", one of her shorter ones. "Atlas Shrugged" is for later, if you decide you like her writing and can stomach it. I've actually read about a half-dozen of her books, and have a few first editions of a couple. I found them entertaining about 35 years ago when I was 13, but I found Stephen King entertaining then, too...

Of course, you can go rent the movie version of "The Fountainhead", with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, which is a very condensed version of the book which still keeps to the main points of the novel.

Indeed she did, in her own diaries and notebooks, in her own handwriting - but of course no amount of real world evidence of what a monster she was is ever gonna get through to you "True Believers" any more than the obvious notion that Yaweh is an evil malicious prick that feeds on human misery would to most Christians.

But here's the rub - the notion that the mere EXISTENCE of another way, another culture or belief is a threat that must instantly be destroyed is a critical self-condemning admission of weakness.

It means that if there is ANY OTHER CHOICE AT ALL, than people will flock to it, abandoning yours, and as such it cannot be allowed to exist...

Which means your ideology HAS FAILED, is a failure, is neither logically consistent nor real world effective, and is thus terminally broken.
(For example)
http://chronicle.com/article/The-Cautionary-Tale-of-a/125452/

In short, every time one of you randroid or religious scum - which might I add I consider one and the same because Objectivism qualifies in my eyes as a religion when the faith placed in it is directly contradictory to every scrap of evidence - goes blasting and flaming anything that isn't them and theirs, it is a complete admission of the weakness and failure of their own ideology.

That pressing NEED, to destroy any other ideology, culture or belief - is a monstrous thing, because not only is it an admission of the failure of your own, but it also speaks of a desire to drag everyone else swirling down the drain with you rather than face up to and admit it.

Objectivism, thy name is denial.

Frem,
That might be the single most concise, accurate, and effective tear-down of the religious hive mind mentality I have ever read.

You are completely correct.

I've always viewed the almost xenophobic efforts of religious leaders, or community/fringe group leaders, who do everything they can to demonize all other belief systems, to be nothing but pure fear. Fear that their followers may one day wake up and sniff a smidge of independant thinking, leaving the rigid belief systems imposed on them behind.

I'm not 'pretending' anything. I understood the issue to be of the Gainesville FL " preacher " who burned a Qu'ran.

I know you'd love to bring up a random array of decades old events where some out of the way church in Dogpatch USA burned this or that book, but that's not relevant to the issue at hand.

That hardly compares to this universal hatred by the Left for Ayn Rand and this kook going on national t.v., muttering his inanities.

So does everyone else. The issue is whether or not Rand has a positive effect on the collaborative nature of human effort. I think some of her ideas by themselves help, but that those who follow her religiously tend to end up as sole operators towards their own benefit, and even in an individualist free society that is an overall liability.

The sticky point is that we rely on each other and help one another, and collaborate better together because when acting as groups we are more than the some of our parts, and much more than our individual selves.

I see this as very different from collectivism, in which the cooperation is not a collaboration of different minds, but the obedience to a single thought pattern and effort, which I think leads to disaster at the other end of the spectrum.

Rand is not without merit, but Frem's points on Randroids is well taken. I've known a number of insular isolated people who serve no one but themselves as a result of their adherence to Ayn Rand's philosophy.

Producers are those that actually MAKE a product.

IIRC, at the end of (one of her many tedious novels) The Heroes go off to found a society of "their own".

Dood, I was 16 years old when I read that novel, and even I thought... yeah, but who is going to produce the steel?

There's a big gap between having an "idea" and "producing" a product. That difference is... wait for it... work!

Actually DT, again, most of the salient points made (as opposed to the incoherent and contradictory ramblings) are cribbed almost verbatim from an author by the unlikely name of Garet Garret from some book HE wrote back in the 1920s, but damned if I can remember the name of it off the top of my head.

Which is why sections of her book seem all out of place and almost copy-pasted in, cause very likely they were.

Seriously, you'd have to go pretty far (provided one excludes Cheney and Kissinger) in order to find anyone else with so few redeeming qualities as a human being.

Just for you, Frem

Google's new "Okay, be evil" Randroid OS:

The new patented (everywhere don't copy it or we will bankrupt your grandmother) software is designed to optimize the performance of your machine without any deference to other users or the network as a whole.

Earlier adopters are attracted by the corporate image associated with the product:

Though many are disillusioned when they file that networks are shared, and it brings back memories of filesharing and bittorrent when other people might use your bandwidth.

Fortunately, the new randroid system is especially networked to take advantage of a shared system to make sure that you end up with everything, and no one else ends up with anything!

Sounds to good to be true? Well, as long as you are the only user of the product, it might work.

And as long as your network can handle everyone's files, data and your only socket connections across the network are to leech resources to serve your own computing power needs, and you don't fall victim to a malicious hacker...

...of the sort who is only out for themselves, and doesn't understand the value of cooperation, namely, that others serve you!

And then screaming a fit and threatening users - how DARE you actually USE the product we offered you!
(This has become so common I've begun to harrass and sabotage *ANY* company that takes this attitude, and encourage 4chan, Anon, Goonswarm and the like to do so as well.)

And finally, pay up, or else!

So much for "Email was meant to be free!" - as a charter member, I wrote the company founder personally and verbally tore his goddamn head off for that.

As I pointed out, once a company outstrips the monkeysphere of it's command staff, this is INEVITABLE, it's like The One Ring, never a question of if, always a question of when.

Of course, my solution isn't necessarily regulation, cause that's all too easy to buy off, if not eventually make into a weapon to protect your monopoly, like american car makers and safety standards, etc etc.

My solution is, once again, to quit crushing empathy out of our youth and allow evolution and natural human instinct to increase the monkeysphere untill eventually a point comes when all humans are included in it, if not all people(1).

(1) There's humans I don't consider people, and animals who I might - it's all in whether your conduct is worth of the description.

Oh, and FYI, Atlas Shrugged bombed financially, just as any real-world project based on Objectivism does, and average reviews for it are 20% or less.

Of course, we all know the petty little pricks will throw a tantrum and blame everyone but themselves, but that's in keeping with Objectivism as well.

And if yer gettin the feeling I don't care for the ideology, you'd be right.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Producer says he's unlikely to make Parts 2 & 3 now, after pouring 18 years and more than $20,000,000 of his own money into this dog. But hey, it's made nearly $3,000,000 back. As a capitalist, I'd say the producer isn't very good at it. I'm sure he'll be looking for a bailout... ;)

So it appears that the answer to the question "Who is John Galt?" is, "Who cares?"

They really should change their slogan. "Okay, be a little bit evil. Or a lot. Whatever."

She also considered those who DO the actual work - the back-breaking labor for low wages that makes your beloved "producers" so rich - to be "parasites" and "leeches".

That's where she loses me.

There is no such thing as a "self-made man", Wulfie. I know you like to jerk off to your fantasy of having done it all yourself, but you didn't, and you couldn't.

Why does it bother Lefties to admit that some folks work harder and achieve more than others ? At what point do you give credit to the individual for making certain choices and doing the work ?

Ever ?
