Let's see; some here have gotten joy out of posting Obama's numbers being down. So do I get to jump up and down about this one? Mind you, I'm not an Obama fan, but given the options so far from the right, I prefer he be re-elected, "you betcha!"
Quote:

President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president's standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.

Comfortable majorities of the public now call Obama a strong leader who will keep America safe. Nearly three-fourths — 73 percent — also now say they are confident that Obama can effectively handle terrorist threats. And he improved his standing on Afghanistan, Iraq and the United States' relationships with other countries.

Overall, Obama's approval rating is up slightly from 53 percent in March and a 47 percent low point following last fall's midterm congressional elections, in which Republicans won control of the House and gained seats in the Senate. It was 64 percent in May 2009, just months after he was sworn into office.

Also, 53 percent now say he deserves to be re-elected; 43 percent say he should be fired, making it the first time in an AP-GfK poll that more people say he should get a second term than not.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans who call themselves political independents now approve of him; only about half did in March. They were critical to his 2008 victory but many had fled as his administration increased government spending and passed a sweeping health care overhaul. They could just as easily turn away again between now and next fall.

Among the poll's other findings:

• Sixty-nine percent say Obama will keep America safe, up from 61 percent in March; 65 percent call him a "strong leader," up from 57 percent.

• Sixty-three percent say Obama cares about people like them; 63 percent also say that he understands the problems of ordinary Americans.

• Sixty-three percent view Obama favorably, up from 59 percent in March.

Still, his re-election is far from certain. And there are warning signs in the poll.

• Nearly two-thirds of people — 61 percent — disapprove of his handling on gas prices, even though there's little a president can do about them.

• Less than half give him positive marks on dealing with the federal budget deficit or taxes, two big upcoming issues.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted May 5-9 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,001 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

People are constantly riding the waves and the winds of current events, when a president does something that people see as good they like him more and then they like him less when something else happens, there's an eb and flow and people are easily swayed one way or the other depending on how they feel at any given moment.

I'm with you Riona, I think Obama has been getting more credit from the media than he deserves for the OBL raid. Then again if the mission had gone badly I think he would be getting more criticism than he deserves for it... That's the way the media works, they tend to want to read too much into things.

But there will be a long term effect on Obama's polling numbers from the OBL raid I think: having ordered and presided over such a successful mission has I think answered a lot of people's niggling doubts about him being weak, indecisive, even sympathetic to terrorists - basically everything lobbed at him by the right-wing media. All of this will ring pretty hollow now to ordinary people - hard to make such charges stick against a guy who has successfully taken out the nation's biggest enemy.

It's not personal. It's just war.

In no way am I an 0bama supporter. But he totally deserves this bump. He was in charge when it happened, and for long enough that the antecedent events most likely happened under his presidency. His administration maintained security on the situation. He played the media like a fiddle and Pakistan was clueless, even after the choppers were flying over their academy.

Strong work.

I find it amusing, how fickle people are. Yes, he deserves some credit, but as you said, Riona, only some...the Seals really deserve the credit. But I won't deny him his moment in the sun, it will pass all too quickly.

It's just funny, how people change their approval over one thing or another, and I got a kick out of posting the current approval rating, since some here have taken SUCH joy in crowing about it when it's low, saying it's the end for him, etc., etc. Made me smile is all.

I don't know how much approval ratings really figure into things. For instance lets pretend that Obama has a lowish approval rating again come election time. But the other candidates are not that great so Obama gets elected again inspite of his low ratings, it could totally happen.

I do think as said above that Obama does deserve credit for making a bold move on initiating the Kill-Bin-Laden offensive, but as Niki said I think the SEALS deserve more creidt than they get, SEALS Abu! (Huzzah for the SEALS) In Irish when you are rooting for something or cheering you say (insert thing here) Abu!

On that, we are in strong agreement. One big key to the mission's success seems to be keeping the Pakistani security services out of the loop!

Desert One was primarily a failure of training. The first heavy lift helo lost orientation when the pilot's view was obscured by blowing sand during takeoff. The pilot failed to correct a known flight tendency and collided with one of the Hercules transports.

Carter took full responsibility, which earns him points in my book too. Loyalty is a two way street. Your subordinates have to be loyal to you, and you get the glory when they succeed. But when they drop the ball you get the blame, and they get none of it. And in that way you are loyal to them.

Everybody in this thread is so happy about the topic. Hate to breach the mood with reality.

Please, SPOILER ALERT!! If you agree with the above posts and want to maintain this keel, please jump down to the next post.

For those wondering how such a poll could have been generated, note the recent makeup factors of the AP polls. They have been trending to heavily Democrat and minimal Republican sampling, in order to sway the percentag4es higher.

On this particular poll, over 20 percent were undecided (or whichever term they used this time), and the Republican sampling was 18% of the total, and the Democrat sampling was 37% of the total.

So don't expect the figures to remain up if the next poll is more balanced (unbiased), and you can hope the figures stay up if the poll is similarly biased again.

C'mon. You're not that dense, why pretend to be?

After a whopping minute or two, using a search srting on Yahoo of something like "ap poll obama sampling" one of the first page hits was this, if it pastes here correctly (otherwise it's the www.phillyburbs.com hit):

Well, that didn't work. The search string was "us obama ap poll news" and it's the 9th hit.

Also, I weas incorrect, the Dem sampling was 35% when I recalled 37%, sorry.

So don't be that way, OK? If you look for the facts, they are available, just don't succumb to abc, cbs, ap, cnn, pmsnbc, nbc, usatoday or you won't learn anything. I am certain you could have just as easily found the data had you looked, it's not like it's a secret, except from libtards who refuse to face facts.

Had you stated that you made an attempt to find the facts and had not managed, I would have taken your comment more seriously.

More:
Changing the serach string from "news" to "sampling" gets more starting on the 2nd page (at yahoo), from radioviceonline, scaredmonkeys, examiner.com, and links provide an excellent breakdown at:
http://hotair.com/archives/2011/05/11/and-the-award-for-the-most-ridic

and several of these point out that, although AP will not provide a link to expose the skewed sampling, you can look at the source poll data at GfK and apparently page 36 provides unadulterated data for your interpretation.

Or Riona’s:

Or KPO’s
Quote:

I'm with you Riona, I think Obama has been getting more credit from the media than he deserves for the OBL raid.
So in comes JSF, taking it seriously and feeling the need to check out the poll (apparently) and knock it down. Then you pile it on:
Quote:

I was enjoying watching these folks happily gamboling in their fantasy land.
And JSF
Quote:

Emm, sorry. I too was amused, but considered it a public service. Those craving their blinders shouldn't whine since I gave the spoiler alert.

Quote:

... libtards who refuse to face facts.
The most amusing thing in all of this is that NONE of us took the poll seriously...certainly not me! You feel the need to jump in and talk about “blinders” and “delusions” and damn, I must have missed all that “gamboling”!

That was the POINT of this thread. Righties are so quick to put up threads about “Obama’s numbers lower than ever!”, etc., and snark that it’s the end for him, etc., etc. So when I saw this (not that I believed it for a minute—-all polls are pretty much skewed, and change with the wind), I couldn’t resist putting it up. I got no delusions or blinders, nor did anyone else from what they wrote, but apparently you righties just can’t take it and have to believe we blindly adore the man...like so many did Bush. We don’t; note we think he got too much credit for the OBL raid; note another said he’s no fan of Obama, and I’ve made it clear I’M certainly not!

So now I get a second smile; not only did I snark in my first sentence about why I put it up, but now I get to snark again that you took it seriously and just HAD to deny it and come back with nasty remarks. Gawd, I love the right!

I know, I’ve questioned polls too, but shown how they change so quickly and that different polls give different results, rather than checking out the poll to see how slanted it was and making cracks about delusions and blinders. It’s fascinating, the veil you see us through which can’t even give us the benefit of having any brains! You “saw” things that weren’t even there, and reacted accordingly.

Frem’s right. Some people are far too easy to play. And, just to mention; when you put up facts, it’s up to YOU to back them up, not up to others to look. FYI.

Oh, and Mike, I ADORED the Faux News thing...they can’t even count apparently? That wouldn’t mean their figures are, like, WRONG or anything, would it? Oh, my, what a great way to start the day...

Wow...look at all you went through just to diss a POLL (I just noticed your additions to your post), for heaven's sake! I hope all that work was worth it for you, now you can relax and go back to feeling self-righteous, right? Far be it from me to spoil our day.

By the way, what did you think of the Faux News poll Mike put up? Anything to say about that, while you're at it? He obviously had to REEELY search to find out that one was wrong...

Given his numbers were down in the 40s for quite a while recently, did you REALLY think we believed they suddenly shot up to 60?!? He didn't even get much of a bump from the OBL raid, which I think is great; it shows MOST Americans anyway weren't overly impressed.

On the other hand, and not that it will change a damned thing, it's amusing that we're not hearing the usual crowing about how Democrats are "soft on terrorism" and "can't keep America safe". Won't go away for long, it's too yummy a talking point, but maybe shut 'em up for a little while anyway.

Ok you're right JSF, the poll does appear to be very poorly sampled, and unrepresentative. 60% support for Obama did sound a bit incredible. Here's the poll data, with the political self-identification Qs on page 37: http://www.ap-gfkpoll.com/pdf/AP-GfK_Poll_May_Topline_051011_POLITICS.
pdf

One can actually see unrepresentative samples in previous polls as well (45 Dems to 33 Repubs in last, March poll). Seems pretty bad to me, I'd like to hear how the pollsters defend such imbalances.

Still, the main talk in this thread was discussing the popularity 'bump' Obama has gotten, and several other polls besides this one confirm that bump... So don't worry your revelations don't really shatter any misconceptions, no need to play hard-to-get with your sources next time
