Comedian Jon Stewart sparred with Fox News anchor Chris Wallace over media bias Sunday and argued that "the bias of the mainstream media is toward sensationalism, conflict and laziness," instead of a liberal agenda.

When challenged on how he develops his stinging – and persistent – satiric critiques of Fox, Stewart joked, "It's actually quite easy when you feel it. You got to feel it in your soul, you know?"

But Stewart stood up for his "Daily Show" antics.

"Here is the difference between you and I," he said, "I'm a comedian first. My comedy is informed by an ideological background, there's no question about that.

"The thing that - in some respect - conservative activists will never understand is … I'm not an activist. I'm a comedian," Stewart said.

He argued that his own influence is drawn only from the public's own letdown in the media.

"The embarrassment is that I'm given credibility in this world because of the disappointment that the public has in what the news media does," he asserted.

"There's no question that I don't tell the full story.

"But I don't not tell the full story based on a purely ideological partisan agenda," Stewart continued.

The comedian also showcased his serious side, admitting that he voted for George H.W. Bush because "there was an integrity about him that I respected greatly," and revealing his disappointment in President Barack Obama because, "I thought he understood the corrosiveness of the system that existed, and I thought he was going to do more to blow the system up."

And he denied his own ambition to be a "political player," saying instead, "Do I want my voice heard? Absolutely. That's why I got into comedy."

Re the underlined part, I think he's right on.

On a snarkier note, the irony to me is that Stewart freely admits he's both a comedian and one with an ideological background, while FauxNews commentators ARE both comedic and not tell the full story based on a purely ideological partisan agenda. Which of course SWEARS isn't true, that they're serious and "fair and balanced" (when nobody with any brains can take them seriously).

The Left wing media bias is undeniable. To focus so much on what FOX news does, while ignoring the same attributes cbs, abc, msnbc, etc.. do, but for the Left, is beyond idiotic and blindly partisan.

Stewart is a court jester. And he's made a good living at it. Fine. But when he starts to tussle w/the likes of Chris Wallace, who is about as straight shooter as you'll find anywhere in the news, Jon suddenly becomes very UN funny.

I concur with Rap. JS touts his line as jester, but he is pulling strings. He has been fair at times, but I have some issues with him.

I'll give Jon this: The media, on all networks, is Nonsense-biased.

Just out of curiosity, which is more "pulling strings", a network which is laughably bent in only one direction ideologically yet tells its viewers it's being fair and balanced and giving them the whole story, or a comedy show which is up front that it's ideologically bent and says so flat out, as well as saying "hey, we're a COMEDY show, don't take us seriously!"? Sorry, I disagree he's pulling strings. His show is political satire, overtly, as is Colbert's; it's not about pulling strings; FauxNews IS, precisely.

Excellent, Frem, well-known truism because it IS true. Making stuff palatable and saying what others won’t with humor has always been the job of the jester, so calling Jon that is actually a compliment. Jesters have existed to take TPTB down a notch. I repeat: Huzzah Jon!

And just ‘cuz: Raptor, your is worth no more than a , a , a and maybe a or two.

Oh, and while I’m at it.

Huh. And here I thought you were straight, not a Log Cabin Republican't. Or is it because Niki's older than your usual 14-to-17 year-olds?

And what makes Jon Stewart's comments so much funnier is that FauxNews had to edit them so heavily to try to make them fit their narrative, and cut out most of the really telling remarks, including that "straight shooter" Chris Wallace claiming that, in response to MSNBC's "liberal agenda", FauxNews represents "the other side".

I can see how they wouldn't want to air one of their heavyweights making Stewart's exact point for him, or letting slip the mask that they have anything "fair and balanced™" in their reporting at all.

As Stewart pointed out on his show, if your only answer to a network telling "their side" is to make sure to tell only YOUR side, you really shouldn't call it "fair and balanced™"; that should really be for a network that reports BOTH sides.

And of course, FauxNews dumped that part of the interview. Imagine my surprise...

It's the "child" part of that equation that makes it creepy.

Yeah, I know, most girls are experimenting with sex when they're 15-16. Still doesn't make it right for a 51-year-old man to be the one they're "experimenting" with. She doesn't know better; he should.

Meanwhile, Chris Wallace asked Jon Stewart to defend his network by showing comedy clips. Of shows on a network called "COMEDY Central". He was trying to diss what Stewart does with the news by insinuating that the network is crass.

Stewart calls what he does "comedy". It's a far more apt description than FauxNews calling itself "news". And hell, The Daily Show has more balanced reporting than FauxNews - Stewart goes after Democrats as readily as he goes after Republicans.

And yes, I'm saying that , tongue in cheek.

This seems so ridiculous... I'm wondering if it's not just some stunt, to get this budding pop singer's career off the ground, w/ all the attention.

I'd not be surprised to hear, in a month or so, that all this was just a ruse, one big sick joke.

At least, that's what I'm hoping.

Oh, and not to thread jack, but Jon's funny, a lot of the time. But Chris Wallace is as close to a real journalist as you'll find, on any network. Jon's in way over his head on this one.

Actually, Jon didn't seem to be in over his head at all. It looked to me the other way 'round, as if Wallace had just been the guy that a "60 Minutes" crew had walked in on.

Jon Stewart's a jester, to be sure, but don't underestimate his depth of understanding of media. Check out some of his "serious" interviews sometime.

I've been dating younger women now for 7 years, well not that young, early 20's. I enjoy their spark a bit more than the women my age...and I have been truly in love with a woman 15 years younger...so love is ageless, but the law is not nor is creepy young.

Obviously the half hour show that airs four times a week, and takes several weeks off a year, has more influence than the 24 hour news network.

Mean ol Jon need to stop picking on poor conservatives by catching them in so many lies. Sure, he goes after libruls when they do it, too - but they deserve it for being evil libruls. But doing it to saintly conservatives and god-sent bastions of truth like Fox is just unacceptable.
