Quote:

At least one part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul has proven popular. With the economy sputtering, the number of young adults covered by health insurance grew by about a million as families flocked to take advantage of a new benefit in the law.

Two surveys released Wednesday — one by the government, another by Gallup — found significantly fewer young adults going without coverage even as the overall number of uninsured remained high. The government's National Center for Health Statistics found that the number of uninsured people ages 19-25 dropped from 10 million last year to 9.1 million in the first three months of this year, a sharp decline over such a brief period.

The new health care law allows young adults to remain on their parents' health plans until they turn 26. Previously, families faced a hodgepodge of policies. Some health plans covered only adult children while they were full-time students. Others applied an age cutoff.

Elizabeth Wilson, an aspiring opera singer who lives near Indianapolis, said her mother's plan dropped her in the midst of a medical crisis because she had turned 23. At the time, Wilson was in the hospital under treatment for an inflammation of the pancreas. Because of the overhaul, she has been able to get back on the policy.

"It means I don't have to spend every penny I make to get health care," said Wilson, now 24. "I can use some of it to further my studies — or buy food." http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2011/09/21/AP-1-Million-More-Yo

The Titanic buoyed up, and lifted some, above the water line, as the weight cracker her in two.

No one doubted their fate had changed any, but it must have seemed a bit comforting... if only for a brief moment.

She still sank, none the less, killing all those who clung on for dear life.

Hello,

I'm trying to determine the moral of the Titanic story. Is it that these people should be left to fortune and fate, because any attempt to help them is doomed to failure?

Hello,

A picture will not be necessary. I was wondering about these 1 million people who are insured now without enduring a hardship by extending family insurance plans. When we steer away from the iceberg, what alternative is proposed to save them?

My personal 2c, since Obamacare, I've been switched to a rationed care system. It's really pretty annoying, but better than nothing. Before, I had complete state coverage. Expect to see a lot of this: states cutting back, employers cutting back, those who used to fill in the gaps are handing things over to the industry.

Hello Dream,

My experience has been similar. The quality of my coverage is decreasing, with more required out of pocket than ever before.

But anyway, Mr. Raptor, what is your alternative plan for these uninsured people? If it is a good alternative, perhaps we can chart a course towards it in the future.

Those origins of authorship are somewhat in question, the truth in the words themselves is not.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with a result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence:

From Bondage to Spiritual Faith
From Spiritual Faith to Great Courage
From Courage to Liberty
From Liberty to Abundance
From Abundance to Selfishness
From Selfishness to Complacency
From Complacency to Apathy
From Apathy to Dependency
From Dependency back into Bondage

2 observations -

Comprehensive healthcare is nothing short of the voters awarding themselves a largess from the public treasury.

This nation appears hell bent on taking the final step, from dependency back into bondage.

I believe I have.

Save for emergencies, it's not the proper function of govt to provide to the citizenry what they themselves should be capable of providing.

You caught where I was going with the quote, right ? Yeah, I think you did.

Is reform needed ? Sure. Can acting and working on a solution be promoted ? Heck yeah.

Should it be the govt who provides it, in the form of total control of our healthcare system ?

Hell no.

"Do I like seeing puppies die too ?"

Hello,

I'm not sure, Mr. Raptor. Your inability to express empathy for those who suffer is mysterious to me. Do you feel it would weaken your position of non-interference if you admitted that it wounds you when these people suffer and die?

Would it undermine your logic if you confessed to sadness when those who need cures are denied those cures because they are too poor to afford them?

As to the relevance of the question, I believe it is at the heart of the matter.

Has zero to do w/ feeling empathy, or sympathy, or anything, but simply realizing that govt isn't the answer to all the world's problems.

A blasphemous concept to many here, I know, but one which I will continue to push, regardless.

If health care wasn't so rutting expensive to pay for out of pocket then more people _could provide for themselves. Seeing a doctor back in the day was way cheaper comparatively from what I've heard. Now granted now we have more technology and more needs since our genes are getting worse, but still it shouldn't cost as much as it does. I think the only way I can reckon of making it possible for everyone to provide for their own needs is for everything healthcare wise to cost way less. As it is now people need insurance to be able to afford anything significant.

I think watching puppies die (sad and horrible) is not as bad as watching people, humans, die. Apparently Raptor won't admit to a distinction. Curious. Raptor's feelings upon the matter would make more sense if he said something like "I don't like the idea of people not having what they need, but the idea of the government having that much power is intollerable to me, we need to find another way." But he doesn't say things like that, if he did then people could identify with his beliefs and so forth better.

Hello,

I have similar thoughts, Riona.

I think one of the problems in Health Care costs is the price of education. It is so very expensive to become a Doctor. Perhaps if one did not have to invest so heavily in the career, we would find that doctors and other health care providers are available to work for a much smaller wage.

Strange. I do not remember you having such "let them work it out for themselves" feelings in regards to Iraq and their local despot. You were VERY MUCH in favor of forcing others to pay for their healthcare, at gunpoint, weren't you? After all, a big part of your rationale for invading was "WMD! WMD! WMD! HE'S KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE!" That seems very much to be a healthcare issue.

So, just for the record, you were in favor of government-paid healthcare when it came to Iraq, but you're against it for Americans.

I find it odd that you care more for Iraqis than you do for your own countrymen.

Anthony, your entire exchange with Raptor could have been avoided if you'd listened to Story:
Quote:

You're engaging the local zealot, and expecting a reasoned response. You should know better.
I'm guessing you wanted to push to see if you could get a real answer, but you should know THAT by now too. He will never express sympathy for anyone; he will never express EMPATHY because the concept is alien to him.

It was amusing, however, to come into it late and watch Raptor twisting in the wind to spout his zealotry and at the same time avoid your direct questions. Mildly amusing.

He lives in a two-dimensional world, remember that. Anything Obama/Dems do is BAD, period. There can be no saving grace, no compromise, no modification. You cannot reason with that, and trying to do so eventually becomes a case of that famous saying about doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result.

As to diminished healthcare, I think blaming the new health-care system is a simplification. Does anyone know how much the budgetary bind states/localities are in have anything to do with it? A LOT of stuff is being cut back on because of the mess the states are in, because of how much the Fed is cutting from THEM. The Fed cutting from them is neither Obama's nor the Democrats' fault, it all goes back to the mess we were in when Obama took office (the effects of which continued and are still continuing).

I'm not lauding Obama, because he's done little or nothing to improve the situation. I don't know if he WOULD have done anything about the states, etc., if he could, but I know he couldn't when everything he/they tried to do was denied by the Republicans/Tea Partiers. We can't know. But I do wonder if cutbacks have affected health insurance as they have everything else. Here in CA, MediCal benefits have been lessened and in some cases cut. It's not because of anything the federal government has done, it's a combination of the economic situation in this state AND the cuts by the federal government.

Just wondering. I, for one, view the inclusion of one million people now receiving healthcare as a major step forward in a program which is deeply flawed, but which I hope will continue to make forward progress.

Oh, and I can't resist taking this opportunity to crow that I was against the Iraq War from the outset, and protested against it. So were my representatives, Senator Boxer and Congresswoman Woolsey. In October 2002, Boxer voted against the joint resolution passed by the U.S. Congress to authorize the use of military force by the Bush Administration against Iraq. Woolsey was an outspoken opponent of the War in Iraq; on October 10, 2002, she was among 133 members of the House who voted against authorizing the invasion of Iraq. I'm grateful to have representatives who actually REPRESENT me. I've never figured out how so many intelligent people were so easily duped. It saddened me at the time, and today it saddens me even more that so many supposedly intelligent people are being duped by the Tea Party.

Of course you were. One of your big reasons for supporting the invasion of Iraq, according to you - even if there WEREN'T any WMD (and there weren't, of course) - was that Saddam was torturing and killing his own people, that people were suffering under his regime, that his people were starving - and that WE needed to go and take care of his people, save them, rescue them, make them healthy again.

That *IS* government-funded healthcare, at gunpoint, by its very definition. You are trying to us MY tax dollars, taken from me at gunpoint and under dishonest circumstances, and you are using them to give something to somebody else, instead of letting them get whatever they can get on their own.

You supported this. You STILL support this. You just won't support it for Americans, because you hate America.

KWICKO

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

And as usual, when called on his BS, Rappy resorts to the usual name-calling.

How expected.

Meanwhile,

Quote:

Article 31 of the Iraqi Constitution, drafted by your right-wing Bushies in 2005 and ratified by the Iraqi people, includes state-guaranteed (single payer) healthcare for life for every Iraqi citizen.

Article 31 reads:

"First: Every citizen has the right to health care. The State shall maintain public health and provide the means of prevention and treatment by building different types of hospitals and health institutions.

Second: Individuals and entities have the right to build hospitals, clinics,or private health care centers under the supervision of the State, and this shall be regulated by law."

There are other health care guarantees, including special provisions for children, the elderly, and the handicapped elsewhere in the 43-page document.

Under force of arms, President Bush imposed his particular idea of democracy on a people not asking for it - perhaps a noble undertaking in one context and a criminal violation of international law in another. Bush's followers are proud of the Iraqi Constitution, a model for the world, they told us.

So, according to the American political right-wing, government-guaranteed health care is good for Iraqis, but not good for us. Not good for you. They decry even a limited public option for you, but gleefully imposed upon the Iraqis what they label here as "socialism," with much Democratic Party member support.

I never called for it, and Iraq drafted their own constitution. Comparing a war torn nation to our stable and free system is hardly making an honest comparison. But that seems par for the course with you.

You mean the stable and free system that where cost go up each year and more people can't afford it? That one?

Or are you trying to say that a war torn nation is somehow better able to provide health care as a right to its people then the US is?

Yes, that one. If you don't like it, go live in eastern Afghanistan.

Good grief, is all you live for is to look for things to bitch and whine about in the world ?

Seems like.

Well, if it's govt mandated healthcare like OCare, then you're doing it wrong.

Look for that monstrosity to be repealed, or drop kicked by the courts, before too long.

The mandate is little different then a tax to pay for universal health care. I highly doubt it will be repealed, or struck down by the high court.

If it is, the health care system will just continue a downword spiral until the only option will be a government run single payer system.

Fascinating. There's literally nothing to respond to! Exactly like Geezer, when he is shown to be factually, absolutely wrong in saying "That's not govt run healthcare", Raptor resorts to saying "that's not the same thing." Then follows it with an obscenity. How DO these people manage to get through the day? It doesnt' seem like they're functional, mentally. I don't think I'll ever understand it.

Your inability to comprehend the basic concepts of this discussion leaves you with, well not much else.

And it shows.
