CNN's latest poll of polls on the GOP race, an average of the three latest national surveys from this week, shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with the support of 20% of likely Republican primary voters. Cain is at 17%, followed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 15%.

And Cain's rise has apparently come directly at Perry's expense -- "Recent polls show Cain gaining at least 12 points and Perry dropping by about that much," explained CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

The dynamic is not a new one in the GOP White House race.

Romney emerged early as the front-runner, but Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann was the early favorite with conservatives and the tea party movement. When Bachmann announced in a CNN debate in June that she was jumping into the race, she surged into second place in most polls.

In mid-August, Bachmann won the closely watched Iowa Straw Poll but that was overshadowed by Perry jumping into the race on the same day.

Perry jumped to the top of most national polls shortly after getting into the race. But a couple of lackluster debate performances brought him back into the pack.

So what's behind a rising Cain?

On the surface, the spike in his polling comes on the heels of Perry's meteoric rise and equally meteoric fall. After Perry's shaky showing in a debate in Florida last month, Cain pulled out a surprise win at a Florida GOP straw poll the day after. At the time, GOP activists who voted in the straw poll told CNN they had come ready to vote for Perry but switched to Cain, their second choice in many instances, after Perry faltered in the debate.

Cain's biography has an inherent appeal -- especially in these tough economic and fiscal times when faith in government and political leaders is at a low.

Cain, who is African-American, is not a career politician -- a fact he frequently touts. Instead, he has a business background and is the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza. And he's a quintessentially self-made man: He comes from modest working-class roots in Atlanta, and attended college and graduate school in computer science before eventually making his way onto the executive track.
.....
Recently, Cain hosted his own radio talk show in the Atlanta area, potentially giving him a built-in base of supporters in Atlanta's conservative suburbs. And as his presidential campaign has taken flight, he's promoted his book, "This Is Herman Cain!: My Journey to the White House," which was released Monday.
.....
[ Dan Ronayne, who previously worked for the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and President George W. Bush's re-election campaign]said
.....
"there is an appetite for someone who is an outsider and someone who can talk about being a job creator." But, he added, that there is concern among the GOP base about Cain's readiness on policy issues, particularly foreign policy.

Earlier this year, Cain stumbled during a discussion about the Middle East peace process when asked a question on Fox News about the Palestinian right of return. He's made controversial comments about Islam and Muslims -- comments which forced him to issue a public apology after a visit with Muslim leaders at a mosque in the Washington metro area.

And questions remain about his "9-9-9" plan -- like whether it can generate enough revenue to fund the federal government, whether it is politically viable in the current climate with much concern about funding Social Security and Medicare in the decades to come, and whether Americans will go for the idea of a national sales tax.
.....
And, orthodoxy aside, Cain is more outspoken than most of his fellow GOP contenders.

"Don't blame Wall Street," Cain said of the growing "Occupy Wall Street" movement in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Wednesday, "Don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself."

Asked Thursday about those comments during a book signing event, Cain didn't back down. "If you are envious of somebody who happens to be rich, that you call a fat cat, go and get rich," Cain said, "instead of expecting them to walk outside their office and write you a check. That's not the way America works. Work for it!"

While Cain may be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Romney and Perry in recent national polls, he has yet to show either the fundraising muscle or the political organization that are at the disposal of his fellow top-tier rivals. And like Obama before him, Cain may have to negotiate the tricky issue of race as he ascends to the national political stage -- a task made even more treacherous by the GOP's complicated relationship with the African-American community.

At this point, one thing is certain: Cain's unique mix of biography, oratory, personality and policy is striking a chord with the GOP base just as the Republican White House field is being clarified by the recent decisions of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin not to seek the party's nod, and by doubts about Perry's readiness.

Another certainty? The months ahead before the first votes are cast in the GOP primary race leave plenty of time for the dynamics of the Republican race to change yet again. Cain could fail to consolidate early interest and support with conservatives and see his poll numbers slide as a result, like Bachmann and Perry.

"There is an awful long way to go," says Ronayne, who now works in public relations in Washington and isn't currently supporting any candidate in the GOP race. "If this was a movie, we haven't even gotten to the good parts yet. The action is just starting." http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/07/politics/rising-cain/index.html?hpt=hp_b
n3

Looks to me like the pattern has been one rises, then falls to someone else who rises, then falls, etc. Which to me means they're still looking for someone who fills the bill and haven't found anyone (IF there's a human being out there who would, for the extreme right and Tea Party!). Meanwhile, Romney just sits there, bobbing up to first, down to second when another "rising star" arrives.

I say again, won't it be hysterical if the right ends up with a choice between someone they're convinced is a Muslim...and a Mormon? Should be fun to watch!

Perry looked like their fabled "Golden Child" right up until he actually opened his mouth and tried to speak, and nothing came out but a garbled, nonsensical mess. It was almost uncomfortable to watch him in that debate debacle; Romney was content to not say a word and just let Perry keep talking and digging his hole deeper and deeper.

Once the nation got a good look at the REAL Rick Perry, they recoiled in horror and revulsion, and quickly looked to someone - ANYONE - else. For now, that anyone else is Herman Cain.

At least until people get a good look at his beliefs and policies, that is.

Yeah, he ain't THE guy for the Reps - what a carnival funhouse group they are. I think in 50 years people will say, "that was one of the most ridiculous groups of people brought together for anything, let alone running for president."
It also means the more desperate the reps will be with their "tactics." Remember the woman who said an Obama thug sliced her up and it turned out she carved up her face in the mirror so that what she carved was opps! backwards?? Expect more of that kind of brilliance.

Absolutely. He has a proven track record, honest, hard working, intelligent.... my kinda guy.

But it's early. Other contenders were cast aside during the primaries, and came back to win. Clinton, McCain, even Reagan.

To address the issue, as to what's behind the rise? When he speaks, people listen. And most folks like what he's saying. It's as simple as that.

He is honest. His reputation is impeccable. Does being honest always translate to being 100% right? Nope. Folks make mistakes, or think their info is accurate, at the time they said it. Doesn't mean they're dishonest, unless they know something to be false at the time they say it, and still try to pass it off as the truth.

Then there are matters of opinion. So many on the Left love to call those who don't agree with them 'liars'. Seriously, get a clue.

I swear, you guys are delusional beyond the realm of it being funny.

By the way, when Cain gave a speech and cited the "Constitution" when quoting the Declaration of Independence, was he lying?

Or are you going to keep insisting that he knows these documents better than I do?

Because if you claim he knows them so well, then he was willingly saying things which he knows to be untrue, or "lying".

And if you say he doesn't know them, then you're admitting that he's not very bright.

So which is it?

Reality Check: Herman Cain was director of the private foreign jewish "Federal" Reserve Bank that counterfeits all so-called "dollar bills" and steals 100% of fed income taxes, that owns the fed govt and tells the Pentagon to invade innocent nations to genocide millions of people and bankrupt USA forever. Romney and Perry are both Bilderberg Domocrat RINOs.

TODAY: Ron Paul wins Values Voter poll ahead of Herman Cain

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas turned out his well-organized crop of supporters Saturday and won a presidential preference straw poll with 37% of the vote.

Coming in second place in the poll of social conservatives at the annual Values Voter Summit was retired pizza chain executive Herman Cain, who pulled in 23% of the vote.

Cain, who won a surprise victory in a straw poll last month in Florida, delivered a rousing speech Friday afternoon in which he joked about the pressure that comes with breaking into the “top tier” of candidates in the GOP primary race. Cain’s showing was considerably better than the two presumed frontrunners. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry didn’t do so well. Perry won 8%, and Romney took just 4%.

The poll confirmed that with just a few months before the first nominating contests, the Republican presidential field is still unsettled.

For Perry, the result had to be a disappointment, as he’ll need the support of social conservatives to keep him competitive with Romney.

“They’re really analyzing the candidates, where they stand on the issues,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Washington-based Family Research Council, the group that sponsored the three-day event. “The field is still fluid….I think people are still in the process of deciding where they want to go.”

Paul’s victory was not exactly a surprise. The Libertarian congressman has a loyal following and is known for his ability to organize a strong showing at such events.

The summit, which began Friday morning and featured speeches by all the major Republican presidential candidates except Jon Huntsman Jr., drew 3,406 registered attendees, including about 600 who arrived Saturday morning as Paul was scheduled to speak.

“There were a number of people that left after Ron Paul spoke,” Perkins said at a news conference after the results were announced, suggesting that Paul’s win reflects the devotion of his diehard supporters, not a broader preference held by most social conservatives.

Still, chants of “Ron Paul, Ron Paul” filled the ballroom of the Omni Shoreham Hotel when the results were announced. Paul won 732 votes of 1,983 cast.

Ron Paul - 37%
Herman Cain - 23%
Rick Santorum - 16%
Rick Perrry - 8%
Michele Bachmann - 8%
Mitt Romney - 4%
Newt Gingrich - 3%
Jon Huntsman - 0% Undecided - 1%

Yeah, Mike; I sat there giggling through that episode of Daily Show.

The man is yet another joke to me, as have been all those who have had a "meteoric rise" to the top, then faded as the next shining star comes along. Of course people listen to him, he's saying what they want to hear. Whether he actually believes any of it or not, it's what candidates say. With little variation, he's saying most of the same things Bachman, Palin, Perry, etc. have all said.

For me it's much like the neophites in Congress; they have an ideology and are determined to stick to it, even if it accomplishes nothing and harms most Americans. I see the Tea Party as the same--hell, they CAME from there for the most part!--knowing what they WANT, but not how to achieve it or even if it's good for the country. Cain is just one more.

So far I haven't seen anyone speaking to reality; what they gripe about is real, but they haven't yet come up with any viable solutions. And I don't think they will even try; it's all about getting elected, I don't think they even KNOW what to do, and what they THINK should be done would do nothing more than worsen the situation.

Niki's idea of a " joke " ...

Cain grew up in a working poor family. His father worked three jobs; his mother was a domestic worker. Cain credits his parents with his success.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College in mathematics and a master's degree in computer science from Purdue University. Cain worked at the U.S. Department of the Navy as a mathematician to help put himself through college.

After graduation, Cain worked at the Coca-Cola Company, followed by a job at the Pillsbury Company. Quickly climbing the corporate ladder, Cain served as vice president of systems and services.

Mid-career, Cain moved to Burger King and was eventually promoted to regional vice president. He transformed an underperforming region into one of the most profitable in the nation.

It was that success that led him to become, famously, the president and then, later, CEO of Godfather's Pizza. He is credited with salvaging the pizza chain while turning a huge profit in a short period of time.

Cain went on to serve as the president and later CEO of the National Restaurant Association. During his tenure, he was able to turn it into one of the most influential political action committees in Washington, D.C.

In 1993, he stepped onto the national political stage, challenging then-President Clinton during a live television town hall meeting. The subject was Clinton's national health care plan and its impact on small businesses.

When it came to the employer mandate, Cain asked, "If I'm forced to do this, what will I tell those people whose jobs I would have to eliminate?"

When Clinton said that he would be able to remain competitive and not lay off workers, Cain responded, "Mr. President, with all due respect, your calculation on what the impact would do, quite honestly, is incorrect."

It was a very public rebuke of Clinton's plan that was ultimately unsuccessful.

Cain caught the political bug, going on to serve as economic advisor to the Dole/Kemp campaign in 1996.

Cain launched two unsuccessful bids for public office. In 2000, he ran for president of the United States. He said his candidacy was one of ideas. In 2004, he ran for the U.S. Senate in the state of Georgia and was defeated in the Republican primary by Johnny Isakson...

After completing his master's degree from Purdue, Cain left the Department of the Navy and began working for The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta as a computer systems analyst. In 1977, he moved to Minneapolis to join Pillsbury, soon becoming director of analysis in its restaurant and foods group in 1978.

At age 36, Cain was assigned in the 1980s first to analyze and ultimately to take the reins of Burger King, which at the time was a Pillsbury subsidiary, where he managed 400 stores in the Philadelphia area. Under Cain's leadership, his region went in three years from the least profitable for Burger King to the most profitable. According to a 1987 account in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Pillsbury's then-president Win Wallin said: "He was an excellent bet. Herman always seemed to have his act together.". At Burger King, Cain “established the BEAMER program, which taught our employees, mostly teenagers, how to make our patrons smile” by smiling themselves. It was a success: “Within three months of the program’s initiation, the sales trend was moving steadily higher.”

His successes at Burger King prompted Pillsbury to appoint him President and CEO of another subsidiary, Godfather's Pizza. Cain arrived on April 1, 1986, and told employees that, "I'm Herman Cain and this ain't no April Fool's joke. We are not dead. Our objective is to prove to Pillsbury and everyone else that we will survive." Aiming to cut costs, Cain, over a 14-month period, reduced the company from 911 stores to 420.As a result of his efforts, Godfather's Pizza became profitable. In a leveraged buyout in 1988, Cain, Executive Vice-President and COO Ronald B. Gartlan and a group of investors, bought Godfather's from Pillsbury. Cain continued as CEO until 1996, when he resigned.

Later in 1996 he became CEO of the National Restaurant Association, a trade group and lobby organization for the restaurant industry, where he had previously been chairman concurrently with his role at Godfather's Pizza. He served there until 1996.

Cain became a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in 1992 and served as its chairman from January 1995 to August 1996, when he resigned to become active in national politics.

Cain was a 1996 recipient of the Horatio Alger Award.

Cain was on the board of directors of Aquila, Inc. from 1992 to 2008, and also served as a board member for Nabisco, Whirlpool, Reader's Digest, and AGCO, Inc.

Love the Cain man, but some don't think he's doing what's important now, not enough active campaigning in states with early primaries. Four years ago at this point it was Guiliani with 30% and Thompson with 20%. Cain better get his act together or it'll all be over for him in just a few months. I hope he'll be first in line for VP slot if he's not the nominee.

It sounds like Mr. Cain made good use of many government-funded programs, such as the university program, the military and our infrastructure. I suppose bridges and roadways were in better shape back then, since we as a society agreed to fund their upkeep without requiring a supermajority in the senate for the simple act of paying our citizens to fix things that are broken.

Anyway, the suggestion (I know it's not necessarily the gist of this post) that he is a self-made man is fantasy. Like Elizabeth Warren alluded to recently, people like him certainly work hard, but they owe much of their success to the system we all inhabit.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Ahhhh, I wondered about this. Here's PART of the explanation of Cain's rise:
Quote:

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain has cast himself as the outsider, the pizza magnate with real-world experience who will bring fresh ideas to the nation's capital. But Cain's economic ideas, support and organization have close ties to two billionaire brothers who bankroll right-leaning causes through their group Americans for Prosperity.

Cain's campaign manager and a number of aides have worked for Americans for Prosperity, or AFP, the advocacy group founded with support from billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, which lobbies for lower taxes and less government regulation and spending. Cain credits a businessman who served on an AFP advisory board with helping devise his "9-9-9" plan to rewrite the nation's tax code. And his years of speaking at AFP events have given the businessman and radio host a network of loyal grassroots fans.

The once little-known businessman's political activities are getting fresh scrutiny these days since he soared to the top of some national polls.

His links to the Koch brothers could undercut his outsider, non-political image among people who detest politics as usual and candidates connected with the party machine.

AFP tapped Cain as the public face of its "Prosperity Expansion Project," and he traveled the country in 2005 and 2006 speaking to activists who were starting state-based AFP chapters from Wisconsin to Virginia. Through his AFP work he met Mark Block, a longtime Wisconsin Republican operative hired to lead that state's AFP chapter in 2005 as he rebounded from an earlier campaign scandal that derailed his career.

Block and Cain sometimes traveled together as they built up AFP: Cain was the charismatic speaker preaching the ills of big government; Block was the operative helping with nuts and bolts.

When President Barack Obama's election helped spawn the tea party, Cain was positioned to take advantage. He became a draw at growing AFP-backed rallies, impressing activists with a mix of humor and hard-hitting rhetoric against Obama's stimulus, health care and budget policies.

Block is now Cain's campaign manager. Other aides who had done AFP work were also brought on board.

Cain's spokeswoman Ellen Carmichael, who recently left the campaign, was an AFP coordinator in Louisiana. His campaign's outside law firm is representing AFP in a case challenging Wisconsin campaign finance regulations. At least six other current and former paid employees and consultants for Cain's campaign have worked for AFP in various capacities.

And Cain has credited Rich Lowrie, a Cleveland businessman who served on AFP's board of advisors from 2005 to 2008, with being a key economic adviser and with helping to develop his plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 9 percent, impose a national sales tax of 9 percent and set a flat income tax rate of 9 percent

"He's got a national network now that perhaps he wouldn't have had 15 or 20 years ago because of his work with AFP," said Republican Party of Wisconsin Vice Chair Brian Schimming, who has introduced Cain at events in Wisconsin. "For a presidential candidate, that's obviously helpful to have."

He said Cain was smart to hire Block.

Cain's recent victories in straw polls in Florida and Minnesota highlight the importance of organizing supporters and Block, who has a deep network in the tea party, "gets that side of it," Schimming said.

But Block has had his problems as well. He settled a suit in 2001 accusing him of illegally coordinating a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice's re-election with an outside group. Block agreed to pay $15,000 and sit out of politics for three years.

While Cain is quick to promote his career at the helm of the Godfather's Pizza chain, his ties to AFP aren't something the candidate appears eager to highlight.

His campaign did not respond to inquiries seeking comment, and Cain does not include his AFP work on his biography on his website.

But Cain continues to work with the group.

While several other candidates will be at an Iowa Republican Party dinner on Nov. 4, Cain is scheduled to be in Washington mingling with activists at AFP's annual "Defending the American Dream" summit. He is the only confirmed presidential candidate for the event.

AFP spokesman Levi Russell said Cain has spoken at dozens of AFP rallies and events over the years to support a number of the group's activities. AFP has often covered his travel expenses or paid a "pretty modest honorarium" but he has not been paid since becoming a presidential candidate, he said.

"He's a dynamic, pro-business speaker that connects well with our activists," Russell said. "AFP is a very large organization, and there is a natural overlap between Cain's message of fiscal responsibility and the basic principles that AFP advocates for."

A spokeswoman for the Koch brothers did not respond to The Associated Press's request for comment on Cain.

To some liberals, Cain's rise with the help of AFP shows the incredible influence that outside groups controlled by super-wealthy individuals with specific agendas can have on the political process./u]

"Herman Cain is the first presidential corporate spokes-candidate," said Scot Ross, a liberal activist who leads One Wisconsin Now, which has often mocked AFP as a front group for corporate interests. "The best way to have your issues talked about in the issue debate is to have a candidate in your pocket with snappy comebacks and easily branded policy papers which mask how destructive they would be."

AFP's agenda also includes weakening private and public sector unions, opposing environmental regulations and undoing Obama's health care reform law, among other policies. But before the tea party and Obama, Cain worked with AFP on more local issues.

In 2006, he campaigned all over Wisconsin in support of a proposed constitutional amendment that would have limited state government spending. A slew of officials and analysts said the plan would have ultimately devastated government services, and the Republican-controlled Legislature eventually backed off it.

In a statement announcing Cain's tour, AFP sent out a press release touting his "in-depth understanding of the battle to control out-of-control government taxes and spending." Block promised that Cain was a speaker that activists would not want to miss. http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2011/10/16/AP-Long-ties-to-Koch

Child? So you're old? Age does not necessarily equal wisdom.

Anyway, thanks - that's good advice... I spend weeks away from these boards, and every time I check back in, you're all over them. Try unhooking and "going outside" or "talking to people." It's good for the soul.

1) I've never heard PS make that claim.

PIRATENEWS

John Lee, conspiracy therapist at Hollywood award-winner History Channel-mocked SNL-spoofed PirateNew.org wooHOO!!!!!!

Ron Paul founded the Tea Party

Dear Firefly fans,

18 minutes, 47 seconds.

That’s how much time I’ve been given TOTAL during the last three Republican debates to explain my message of liberty to the voters.

But since poll after poll has shown me in third place nationally over these past few months, surely that amount of time left me in the middle of the pack when compared to my establishment opponents . . . right?

WRONG.

Out of all the candidates, my speaking time was DEAD LAST – even behind candidates I’ve been beating in the polls for months!

I know this is nothing new - especially after the outright censorship my campaign experienced after my incredible finish at the Iowa Straw Poll.

But don’t shrug your shoulders. Don’t become jaded and give up.

Help me break through the media BLACKOUT.

This Wednesday, October 19, is your chance.

So won’t you please immediately pledge to contribute as generously as you can to my Black THIS Out Money Bomb?

The truth is, we’re nearing make-or-break time for my campaign.

After all, we can’t count on the national media to use their megaphones to cheerlead for my campaign as they’ve done for others recently.

There’s nothing the establishment hates more than my message of liberty, sound money, and limited constitutional government.

So the national media does everything it can to IGNORE us.

And after Florida moved up its primary date, it was only a matter of time until Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada all followed suit.

That means our time is running out to get my message to the voters!

That also means it’s crunch time.

And that’s why October 19's Black THIS Out Money Bomb is my campaign’s most critical money bomb yet.

Can I count on you for a generous pledge?

The truth is, I’ve been amazed at what we’ve done so far during this campaign.

But as I told you in the beginning, I’m in this to WIN.

I’m traveling all over the country. My campaign is running hard-hitting TV ads, and we’re bringing in hundreds of new supporters every day . . .

But it’s not just my establishment opponents I have to deal with in this race for President.

As much as I hate to say it, despite the polls, despite my campaign’s success, and despite the fundraising numbers we consistently put up - the national media continues to pretend I don’t exist.

Well, I’m determined to break through their blackout and talk straight to the voters.

But I can’t do it without your generous support.

TV, targeted voter mail, email, and nonstop campaigning all cost money.

I’m not raking in the big checks from the Wall Street bankster fat cats like some of my opponents.

So I’m depending on you.

Please pledge to make your most generous contribution to my campaign’s Black THIS Out Money Bomb on October 19.

I’m counting on you.

For Liberty,

Ron Paul

P.S. Wednesday’s Black THIS Out Money Bomb is the most important money bomb yet for my campaign.

We’re nearing make-or-break time, so it’s absolutely vital I have the funds I need to break through the media BLACKOUT and get my message of liberty straight to the voters.

So I’m counting on you for your most generous pledge to ensure my October 19 Black THIS Out Money Bomb is a success.

My sympathy, Phoenix, AND my understanding. I think you're smart, getting into stuff here is pretty much a waste of time when Raptor's around; some people just can't resist his taunting, and there goes the thread. Nothing seems to make them stop, or we could have actual discussions around him.

It's a shame, tho', good voices are always missed.

New Rasmussen poll show Cain soundly beating Obama head to head. Great news, as Cain is only just really starting to make inroads with Independents. They're not thrilled with Romney, and they've totally bailed on Obama. They will help elect the country's first qualified and competant Black President. The Left, and all the Obama media whores are gonna lose their minds beyond comprehension. Should be even more fun watching than the midterms, when they all agonized and grimaced with pain as the Republican landslide became reality.

Then you're not reading this thread....

This sort of crap is the nonsense the far Left puts out, like the aforementioned Ms Warren.

It's funny to see the Left try to dismiss and belittle the achievements of those who do so much. Unbelievable.

I've never tried to belittle and dismiss the infrastructure work done by the federal government. You're thinking of conservatives when you post things like this. Conservatives do this every day.
