Boy, these guys on the right sure are some smart fellers. Here's Rick Perry last night after the latest GOP sales pitch:

Okay, that's just dumb. If he'd said "17th century" he'd have made the common schoolboy mistake of seeing "1776" and thinking "17th century," but 16th??? It doesn't matter. A lack of historical knowledge is not why this candidate is a bad idea. He would not be one iota a better candidate if he knew the dates down to the day and hour. It doesn't even represent some special insight into his character. I think probably the majority of Americans would hear his proclamation about the century and not even blink. I don't think that says anything special, either. It's both unimportant to what he was saying and unimportant in general. The man has clearly and 'correctly' phrased positions that disturb me far more than this.

I think we can all agree that this is a goofier mistake than getting quotes from the Constitution and the Declaration of Independance confused.

Maybe Martin Luther was involved in that there Revolution too, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada. :) and look out for Henry VIII and all of his six wives, because this is a family affair, and pretty soon Cortes and Pizarro will come marching in and ... wow, a lot of stuff happened in the 1500s/16th century.

I think this last debate added another 20 tons to an already sinking Rick Perry ship. I think the only question about him is when does he drop out? How long before his ego gives way to what's happening? He looked like he was in pain in those debates, completely out of his comfort zone.

It's clear that he meant to say 47, and he never said 'all':

Is it clear at all that Rick Perry knows when the US revolutionary war happened? Or that Sarah Palin knows the difference between North and South Korea? It's anyone's guess.

I think I see what you're saying but being an conservative I'm way to dumb to see the subtleties of your argument. If I have it right you're saying that it's obvious that when a liberal misspeaks its just a slip of the tongue but if a conservative does they are almost certainly stupid. Libs in the US have been pushing that same old line for most of my life but it still makes me chuckle that they cant resist dragging it out to boast their weak self esteem. I think conservatives should just concede that liberals are smarter for the mental health of our liberal friends, if its so important that all accept their rightful mental superiority I think we should accept it as fact and move on.

I think a significant portion of conservatives believe that Obama actually said "all 57 states", and that he meant it. So from my point of view it doesn't hurt to throw the truth out there once in a while.

I was thinking maybe he made the mistake because so many forget that 1776 is actually the 18th century, and he reversed the concept, thinking it was a century EARLIER rather than LATER. I have trouble remembering to go FORWARD a century sometimes...maybe he remembered it wrong.

Yeah, that occurred to me too. Like he's said '17th Century' before and been told that that was wrong, and he was out by a century - but then he forgot in which direction...

It struck me as a strange mistake. Obama's slip up is more understandable, people are used to saying '50 states', and so that fifty slipped in and replaced the forty in his head.

I agree that the 57 states bit is bandied about too often, especially considering that it was a while ago, it was funny for a while but I'm sure President Obama has produced some sort of new material since then that people could find humorous, after all presidents are no longer orators, its been a while since we had a true orator for a president, so they all make goofy mistakes.

To solve a glitch in remembering to skip one ahead for centuries he could have just said the 1700s and saved himself a lot of trouble. Most people who have a hard time with that difference between numbers and century number just say the 1700s, or whatever time they're referring to so no one will know that they get those switches mixed up.
