"... the E-Cat (Energy Catalyzer) will be demonstrated on the 28th of this month and I, for one, will be watching with great interest and enormous hope because if Rossi’s E-Cat system works, it will be goodbye recession and hello, brave new world."

I find this story (the specifics of the science are over my head), and the potential of it fascinating - the players, the critics, it's good science intrigue. I do not agree with some authors that if true, this will change the world forever for the good. People have a way of mucking up everything.

Some more excerpts from the Forbes article:

"If you’ve missed the recent brouhaha over the E-Cat (which stands for Energy Catalyzer), you’re missing out on a three ring circus over a technology that will either change everything or change nothing because what is promised is, in theory, power too cheap to be worth metering.

The E-Cat is a simple device albeit with functioning that defies all known explanations."

The problem with Rossi’s system is that it is too good to be true. It is claimed that the E-Cat only requires some initial heating to start after which the reaction is self-sustaining. The reaction uses a secret catalyst to transform nickel into copper with heat being produced which can be used to make steam, drive a Stirling engine, or be used for whatever you please.

If this device works as claimed, the world will change and not just a little but hugely and at every level of how we’re organized, how we make stuff, how we travel, and how wealth is distributed. And those changes won’t just impact the US or the Western hemisphere; they well transform the entire world because incredibly cheap energy is the ultimate game changer."

If you are curious about the tech of the E-Cat:

http://www.journal-of-nuclear-physics.com/?p=473#more-473

The last link is interesting because Mr. Rossi (if it's him!) actually participates in the comments at the end of the article. One well wisher offers:

"Having been through some of what you’re going through with the critics, I hope you keep in mind to enjoy the journey. That’s where the fun lies. Not the destination!"

To which Mr. Rossi replies (impressively to me):
"I do not agree: it is only the destination that counts: every work made without a real result is useless in itself."

I like this guy.

It should be noted that the Journal of Nuclear Physics is run in part by Rossi and Focardi.

I am sceptical. You know the old saying, if it seems to good to be true it most likly is.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

Not terribly surprising that someone of his background would run a site like that, so I don't see any hidden agenda - it is as you found it and not hidden.
I agree with you about 'too good to be true' (cold fusion anyone?), and at the same time I hope we're both wrong.

...? I dunno, this sounds unlikely.

Even solar fusion, a chain reaction (therefore self-sustaining) requires an input of fuel and eventually burns itself out. This is being marketed like it doesn't.

To have a perpetual reaction, you'd have to drive the reaction back the other way at some point to regenerate the reacting compounds. Otherwise you really would need subsequent infusions of fuel.

I guess it's possible the thing works in two chambers, one which produces the heat and one which converts the fuel back. But to convert it ALL back, you'd have to absorb as much energy as you produce, and if you don't you'd have diminishing returns with each cycle (until burn out).

Even a catalyst for the backwards conversion couldn't drop the energy you'd need (which would have to be taken from what you produce) to zero.

The claim is that it is the fusion of nickle and hydrogen atoms to make copper.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

Not a hidden agenda, but bad science. He can't really claim that his work has been properly published in a peer reviewed journal.

What a lovely dream! We shall see, I guess, but wouldn't it be loverly if there WAS some viable alternatives to all we're trying to do now?

I keep growling when I see the "clean coal" advertising...makes me sick. I dunno enough about natural gas to know if it's viable or not, expensive or not, environmentally friendly or not, but I sure hate the idea of more nuclear, and wind and solar appear at this point at leat to be kind of piecemeal. So here's hoping...

Oh jeez. It's deja vu. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Fleischmann

It's not what you think it is, and definitely not fusion like would happen in the sun.

See, there were a couple of guys at the University of Utah who claimed they'd managed cold fusion a while back. I know this, because yeah, Utah. But anyway, as it turns out someone at the university pushed calling it fusion when the actual reaction wasn't quite what's normally meant by fusion. So there were all these people who tried to reproduce it but could not get the expected energy output like would be expected from a more commonly recognized form of fusion and who couldn't measure any nuclear reaction by products.

Since then, those guys have been a little bit vindicated (there is some energy produced, though not a huge amount, but whether nuclear reaction is occurring remains controversial). People have gone into researching that field, but the claims being made about a self-sustaining reaction are still very unlikely.

I saw that millions were spent on trying to reproduce F&Ponds cf success and not so much. I am a true believer though in "we haven't found it all yet, we don't know it all yet, there are great solutions waiting to be discovered." To think otherwise is the ultimate hubris (and therefore typical of us humans). So maybe not this Oct 28th, but it will happen.

Hello,

I suppose we could all just give up and die, but I think optimism for the future is a better course.

That is one of the great plot arcs of all time isn't it? Can we find *it* before we poison everyone or dig up all of our resources or pollute the planet into a black rock (and have to leave). It's like someone is writing this stuff...

Well said, although im my case said optimism generally comes in the form of a boot to the arse of them standing in the path of it on purpose.

Edit: But it's an OPTIMISTIC boot, really it is...

Bump while I research this.
It was supposed to happen yesterday, but I didn't hear anything. I forgot to check, being distracted while watching St Louis stumble past Texas in the World Series.

Did the whole thing turn out to be a bunch of hype?

Thanks for the reminder...it was... a bit of a bust depending on who you are:

http://www.e-catworld.com/

"The October 28th E-Cat test is over now. This was an event that people interested in Andrea Rossi’s cold fusion technology have been looking forward to for almost a year now, and for many observers it does not seem to have lived up to expectations. In the build up to this event, Rossi had said a number of things would happen, some of which did not transpire. There was no live streaming of the test on Youtube; Rossi did not reveal his theory of what was happening inside the energy catalyzer; the name of the Customer was not made public — in fact this really did not turn out to be a public event at all.

If people were hoping that today would be the day when the world would be shown irrefutable proof of cold fusion in action they were disappointed. The event was essentially a private test of Rossi’s plant by agents of the unnamed American Customer where invited guests and selected journalists were able to get a brief look of the plant in action."

The fact that a "Mystery Customer" is mentioned (I had not seen that before) makes me about 110% dubious now.
