We're poisoning ourselves to death.

Many companies began phasing out BPA in baby bottles and other plastic food containers in recent years to ease public anxieties, but it is still widely used in the linings of metal cans because it helps prevent corrosion and is resistant to high heat during the sterilization process.

The test results revealed:

Tide Free & Gentle detergent, a fragrance and dye-free product marketed to people with sensitive skin and mothers of infants, was found to contain 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen

Simple Green Naturals was found to contain phthalates, a chemical associated with reproductive disorders and birth defects

Allergens were found in products marketed as “fragrance-free”

Hidden reproductive toxins and carcinogens such as phthalates, toluene, 1,4-dioxane and chloroform

None of these chemicals were listed on the product label

A lot of carcinogens and endocrine disruptors everywhere....

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I was astonished to learn that the figure was 1 in 1000.

I think the shame associated with these conditions prevents a greater public awareness. I agree that the chemicals of our lives are likely to blame.

From the first article:

Quote:

DSDs are caused by faults in a baby’s genetic code. Normally girls carry two X chromosomes and boys an X and a Y. DSDs occur when a baby develops an extra X or Y chromosome, or when their body fails to respond to genetic signals to switch development on or off.

Um, I wouldn't put that as the primary factor at all, and this passage contradicts the rest of the article.

You can't DEVELOP an extra X or Y chromosome. Extra chromosome individuals are the product of an error in meiosis, which happens before conception. Occassionally you might get someone with sticky chromosomes that cause duplications and omissions in separation during mitosis, but I would characterize the statement as is as incorrect.

And those genetic switches off and on are governed by the hormone gradient, not the genetic code itself.

The genetics of a fetus is the result of meiosis and which sperm reaches the egg, with the rare incidence of the genetic chimera where a fetus can have more than one father. That is, what the parents have the kid is going to have, barring some transcription errors. But a transcription error is not going to increase the incidence of a disorder in a broad swath of the population, because they occur at random. To increase the incidence of a genetic disorder, you have to have something else at play, like inbreeding or genetic bottlenecking, but that still means that the disorder was always present at some significant level in the population.

No, I would disagree this is genetic. Exposure to chemicals and disruption of hormone gradients during fetal development is much more likely.

Yeah, we have so much harmful chemicals in our environment, which affects how babies develop, plus how sperm and eggs develop in the womb. :( On the less dark side, at least such folk will have more potential partners to choose from who understand that whole concept. Not consolation I know, but if its more common it won't be so embarassing or hard for them to find partners.

But yeah, we've got to clean up our act, as in get the crap out of our products.
