In inner mongolia, a city built for a million lies empty nearly a decade later.

They also built a million cargo vessels too many. Last I saw they were selling for a penny a piece. An american shipping company is actually folding because of it, not because they bought the ships, but because they had loans based on the value of their own dry bulk ships, which is now negative capital.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Ah, yes. The wonders of central planning.

I'm wondering why the government didn't just round up a million folks and move them in. Perhaps some of the 1.25 million people they displaced with the Three Gorges Dam project.

The ideas in this thread, while part joking, aren't half bad. Despite the Chinese government and the questionability of someone choosing to move to live under their human rights record, that city would be the easiest place in the world to hide and eke out a scavenger existence.

One of the articles cited listed over 60 million empty residences. From the photos, some of them looked pretty nice. Think we could convince many of our undocumented immigrants to move to China with the promise of a brand new home free and clear, Chinese citizenship, and a guaranteed job?

This is pretty awesome stuff guys. Thanks.

The snag at the moment is the Chinese govt, which is setting the rent at a pretty high level. It's come down a lot, but recently China has realized that it can make a fortune on real estate, as an alt. revenue source. (Sure you could move in, but if enough people did, they govt. would send in officials, whom they have 400 million of, to start collecting rent)

It also of course would boggle the minds of anyone not familiar with the govt. of China, but we know that this is exactly what we've come to expect from them:

Oh, look, we built a massive expansion in Shanghai and everyone moved in! People doubted our great plan, but it worked. Now we will do it again in Inner Mongolia.

Which of course all happens without anyone questioning it and saying "but Inner Mongolia is not Shanghai" because that would just be too obvious.

Geez,

Good catch on the three gorges. And yes, pretty nice looking place. A little chilly right about now, but so is here.

Remember this sort of thing for when the commie govt. collapses. One of my Chinese relatives has predicted this for 2017, a prediction based on "that's when the last original revolutionary retires" and "look what transpired when that happened in the USSR"

Is that where they shot the Miranda scenes ? If not, it would have been a great place to do so.

So is it China or Mongolia. You're saying both, it must be one or the other since China doesn't own Mongolia. The idea of an abandoned city is just bizarre.

This is a great idea. I mean, think how expensive it is to empty a city for a movie. Miranda, the movie. Now with more reaver zombies. Starring Summer Glau, in 3d.

Riona a chara

Inner Mongolia is a province of northern China. Outer Mongolia is another name for the independent country of Mongolia. Everything north of the great wall was Mongolia when it was built, and I guess still is. It's full of Mongols. They ride on horseback and speak another language, overall, the chinese people consider them romantic, the govt. does not. In crouching tiger hidden dragon, the boyfriend is a mongol.

Inner refers to "inside of China"

Thanks DT, so its technically part of China but it is like Mongolia? I have this thing about Mongolia, not quite as extreme as my thing for Ireland, but still a thing.

It is Mongolia, but it is not the nation of mongolia. The people are mongol, speak a mongol language and write in the mongol script. It's absolutely huge. It was conquered in the mid 17th century by an out of power family who used it to get back into power. It would be later used by Mao Tse Dong for the same purpose.

In theory Mongolia and China are separated by the Great Wall, built in the 3rd century BC. Inner Mongolia is that territory north of the wall to the edge of the current chinese national border.

Reality is more complicated. There were many efforts to move the wall, and then many efforts to conquer Mongolia. What I suspect will ultimately happen is that when communist china falls, inner mongolia will split off and join the rest of mongolia.

At any rate, now it has a massive ghost town. The cost of building the thing must have been phenomenal. Looks nice, though. One of the flaws in chinese central planning is that they think an even population density would be ideal, and that people will enact it if encouraged. In reality the chinese people all want to live in the southeast.

I hope inner Mongolia goes back and joins regular Mongolia someday, that would be nice, since they still speak and write Mongolian, it wouldn't be such a hard transition.

Empires are like that. They also have Tibet of course, and the Uyghurs, who I guess want to be called something like uyghurstan, but they're called xinjiang at the moment, not a name they care for because it is in mandarin rather than their native tongue. But my guess is the first thing the chinese will give up on is one of their external puppet states; north korea. (for a much less political reason: south korea has a labor shortage and 15 times the wage rate of north korea, so it's worth it to them to just buy the entire country) Ironically, this would give us a nuclear armed south korea.
