A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer.

Sarah McKinley says that a week earlier a man named Justin Martin dropped by on the day of her husband's funeral, claiming that he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello. The 18-year-old Oklahoma City area woman did not let him into her home that day.

On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home.

I think the reaction from the news and cops reflects a very American attitude.

Don't bring a 12-inch knife to a 12-guage gunfight.

In these here parts that's whatcha call gun control!

This is one time I'll say Right ON, America! I hope ta Hades WE don't ever end up like the UK with the "Don't hurt the evil pricks, they're people, too" whiny crap.

I will say I prolly would've fired a warning shot or went for some kneecaps first, but it's clear them boys were up to no good and deserve what they got. And if you're gonna rob, at least make it GOOD. I think he was more interested in forcible relations, though...

Good on ya, Sarah!!

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

The late Senator Kennedy wanted to make if a federal law that not only would she have had to NOT protect her home, but go as far as to flee , if possible, to avoid interacting w/ the intruders. Whether uncle Teddy thought it would have been acceptable to leave the baby, and possibly the dog as well, I cannot say.

Good for momma. Hope she never has to do that ever again.

*edit* My guess is that the man who first claimed to be a neighbor, and was 'stalking' the young lady had more on his agenda than just robbing her. You don't pick a lock with a 12" long hunting knife. The guys had to know she was there, and alone, and likely weren't going to let the dog interfere with their intentions.

I hope also that she's never in a situation like that again, that would be horribly scary, the robbing, the shooting, the killing, and it sounds like she's already had a hard enough life. I wish her no more pain.

Amen to that, but I do suggest a shotgun with rubber ball shot, not for any merciful reason, but rather to avoid damage to your home, and if possible avoid contamination of your doorway and porch with the bodily fluids of someone with who-knows-what in their system...

I've cleaned up after a home defense shooting before and it was horrific, besides thinking what a senseless waste of a life the whole matter was, there was tearing out drywall, replacing plumbing/conduit fixtures, and of course the whole matter of biocontaminant cleanup - which got dumped on me cause no one else had any experience with that sorta thing.

So me, I'll shoot you then boot you, cops can pick your bruised, broken, concussed ass offa my doorstep then - cause even rubber ball shot will do a number if I walk a multi-round burst up your body.

Cruel Mercy indeed.

Just out of curiosity, what reaction would you consider more appropriate?

Aiming for the knees? We know the Bible is a bit fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps. ;)

I didn't mean to imply her reaction was inappropriate at all. I was simply struck by the admiration from the press and vindication from the cops. I don't see that kind of empowerment and self-righteousness regarding self-defense in other countries. In other countries, esp developing countries, you are not supposed to fight back. People generally don't feel they have the right.

I feel this acceptance and embrace of self-defense to be a nearly uniquely American attitude.

Cowboys had ta shoot them rustlers, or there weren't food for the little ones.

Other developed countries are much farther timeline-wise from that then we are, just my theory. And we like our guns. A lot.

There is another story today where a 14 yr old boy was home with his sis when perps tried to break in and he killed on of 'em.

Think I'll check our ammo tonight

We usually keep a loaded paintball gun by the door, works well on bratty neighbor kids, and yes, I've used it... For anyone else I'd grab it first and aim for the head, most robbers are cowards, anyhow... Then reach for heavier artillary.

Also, cops shot a dumb middle schooler ta death over a pellet gun. I think there outta be some regs about aiming for limbs or something when it comes to kids, most would be scared shitless by a graze...

HERO

This is a story about the nature of America. She's female, can own a gun, can kill a male intruder, and vote in the next election and all without being stoned to death.

Our mistake in Afganiatan was training their army, but not their women.

100,000 heavy armed and highly trained afghan women with the right to vote might not change the world, but it would have changed the Muslim world.

No, I disagree; I think it's a human attitude. In Britain public opinion in such cases is generally pretty strongly in favour of the person defending their property. There's just less high-fiving, and shots of the homeowner posing with the weapon used for the slaying...

It's not personal. It's just war.

Actually I think that was downright intentional suicide-by-cop, and limb hits are kind of iffy if you know anything about how piss poor police marksmanship and training is, especially when you note the fact that they often manage to unload dozens of rounds in some cases often missing the suspect completely or only hitting them a handful of times.. at short range.

That said, the last shot of that "engagement" hit the kid in the BACK of the head, which strikes me as a bit strange given he was facing them, yes ?

This kinda thing always reminds me of The Andy Griffith Show. All they woulda have to have done was send a female officer in and said "Give the gun, hon, it'll all be ok, would you like some ice cream??"

They give these officers NO DAMN TRAINING on situation diffusion. So many of 'em jumpy on Red Bulls and caffeine, and here -meth and cocaine too.

I wonder if the kid was white would they have been so quick ta shoot??

I feel really bad for the 14 year old defending his sister and the house, what an awful way to lose your innocence. Its natural to lose your innocence at that age, my loss of innocence process was from 12 to 14, some people have a single event that does it and some have a process, it is a natural thing, part of growing up, those experiences around that age where you realize that the world will never be the same, you'll never see it the same way again. But what a horrid way to have it happen.
