My name is Beach, and I enjoy watching Finding Bigfoot. There, I said it. On a whim I taped an FB marathon and after only 10 minutes.... I was so disappointed that I turned it off, "what a waste, how lame..." I was about to delete them all when some mysterious force stayed my hand. "No, damn the Godz! I will save them for later. Jic." And so I did.
I think it was the fact that I use to backpack/hike a lot, all over, and as I found out when I returned to watch the show, Bigfoot be everywhere, everywhere there are people living near lush, remote woods that is, and I love seeing all those places in HD.
The show. What can I say - it's a laugh, but also there are some serious messages about Belief and human nature if you're looking for them. The "leader" Matt Moneymaker, is at once sad and heroic in his absolute belief in the existence of BF. Any rustle in the trees they can't explain and it's, "There's definitely a 'Squatch around here."
One of the things that strikes me, there a million ways to make a living - what could be better than hiking through some of the most beautiful country on the planet looking for something you will never find (probably)? A passionate journey that never ends?
The shows double-sided humor reveals itself best when anyone might question their professionalism or knowledge of Bigfoot, "Hey! I've been hunting Bigfoot for over 20 years!" Um...

And then there are the moments when they're *hunting* in the middle of the night and they make calls to attract bigfoot... which I now do at regular intervals through out our house....

Am I the only goofus watching this?

Curious, as I had started a similar thread, on another forum, pretty much ridiculing such shows as Ghost Hunters, UFO Hunters and Ancient Aliens. This too would fall in that category, imo. As a proud skeptic, I asked, has ANY one of these shows, or any thing like them, ever ONCE produced anything of real significance , at all?

As for guilty pleasures... New Girl has me a bit smitten.

Nope, none, zero. I like the line, "there's a reason they call it ghost hunters and not ghost finders." But, really ghosts?? Sounds ridiculous! (Obviously this show's creators have learned that naming lesson).

One of my favorite characters is the Rannae - she's the skeptic. She's a good foil that... ah forget it, either it works or it doesn't, it's one of those things. The ridicule is earned for sure, I went into the show starting from that same place. It's only after you get to where you have safely beaten the show down (takes 30 seconds) and have enough negative expectations that you can then move on to actually enjoy it and see it for what it can be, which is pretty damn funny.

When Matt M. first showed up in the Sasquatch/cryptid industry the first thing I thought was, "He really should change his name if he wants to be taken seriously." But as time went by I came to the conclusion that the name is perfect, and might even be an invention as it is.

I have to admit that my dad and I do occasionally watch Finding Bigfoot and yes we enjoy it, its entertaining. I don't believe that there are squatches out there, but its fun anyways.

Me personally... I'm with Dr. Jayne Goodall when asked about 'squatch:

Dr. Goodall: Well now, you'll be amazed when I tell you that I'm sure that they exist.

Ira Flatow: You are?

Dr. Goodall: Yeah. I've talked to so many Native Americans who all describe the same sounds, two who have seen them. I've probably got about, oh, thirty books that have come from different parts of the world, from China from, from all over the place, and there was a little tiny snippet in the newspaper just last week which says that British scientists have found what they believed to be a yeti hair and that the scientists in the Natural History Museum in London couldn't identify it as any known animal.

Ira Flatow: Wow.

Dr. Goodall: That was just a wee bit in the newspaper and, obviously, we have to hear a little bit more about that.

Ira Flatow: Well, in this age of DNA, if you find a hair there might be some cells on it.

Dr. Goodall: Well, there will be and I'm sure that's what they've examined and they don't match up. That's what my little tiny snippet says. They don't match up with DNA cells from known animals, so -- apes.

Ira Flatow: Did you always have this belief that there., that they, that they existed?

Dr. Goodall: Well, I'm a romantic, so I always wanted them to exist. (Chuckles.)

Ira Flatow: (To the caller) Alright?

Caller: Thank you.

Ira Flatow: Thanks for calling. (To Goodall) Well, how do you go looking for them? I mean, people have been looking, right? It's not like, or has this just been, since we don't really believe they can exist, we really haven't really made a serious search.

Dr. Goodall: Well, there are people looking. There are very ardent groups in Russia, and they have published a whole lot of stuff about what they've seen. Of course, the big, the big criticism of all this is, "Where is the body?" You know, why isn't there a body? I can't answer that, and maybe they don't exist, but I want them to.

That last part: "... but I want them to." Love that, says so much about Dr. G.

I think there may be some lurking around in the most remote parts of the world, and when there's been a genuine sighting of one it gets out and snow balls and becomes a part of our larger social consciousness, people start thinking they are seeing the same thing when they really aren't. I'm afraid I'm especially skeptical of Native sightings - they are a very mystical people and their history (Indians of the Northwest especially) is full of obvious, shall we say, reality enhancements.
I'm also continually amazed at how faulty people's visual recognition and memories are. But that doesn't mean they don't exist somewhere.
The show obviously has a problem - if it keeps finding nothing it's going to die quickly, and if it finds something... it would be golden! So yeah, if you've been looking for 25 years and only have plaster imprints either they don't exist or you're real bad at your job. I think the key is in one of the guy's lines during a late night stakeout when his calls are *answered* by *something* - "I love Bigfooting!" We should all be so lucky.

For me it's
Quote:

But as time went by I came to the conclusion that the name is perfect, and might even be an invention as it is.
About all of them. They're TV SHOWS...there's yet to be a TRUE "reality show" as far as I can see...well, maybe Top Gear, 'cuz they don't take themselves seriously and are right up front about it, and I could have missed a few others. But the vast majority of them, anyway: It's a way to make money. "We" can never know how serious, if serious at all, these people are about their "quarries".

I think you've got it right, Piz...it's a fantastic way to get someone to pay you to hike around in beautiful places in the world. Beyond that, as far as I'm concerned it's all faked.

Funny that people who are so skeptical of things they can see and hear and which may be supported by facts are so quick to believe there are ghosts and Yeti, etc. Tho' maybe it's not so strange, come to think of it... ;o)

But guilty pleasure? Hell, yeah, why not? I watched Project Runway for a few seasons, and I have NO interest in fashion; Jim watches cooking shows all the time, but never "cooks" per se; and Choey and he both watch that cake show... Whatever turns you on. My "guilty pleasure" is I'll TRY to watch any movie or stupid, made-for-TV piece of shit put out by SciFi channel (or is it SyFy now? I keep forgetting). Some of them I've even watched several times, especially the ones about volcanoes and earthquakes. That's about as guilty a pleasure as one can get, given some of them are reeeeeely bad (I did say TRY--some even I give up on)!

On that note, I wonder who made the decision to put Firefly on the Science channel? It fits, as they connect it (and Aasimov, etc.) to how sci fi connects with science, but someone had to KNOW about it (this comes because I saw the REAL premier episode just last night, and they play the episodes regularly). So, as I said before, there's gotta be a Browncoat lurking somewhere on the Science Channel...good for THEM!

"I love bigfooting" is the operational phrase here.

I think most of us love to watch the occasional TV show about something goofy (cryptids, UFOs, ghosts) and a lot of us like to go out in the woods to hunt stuff (elk, boar, trout). Combine the two and it's going to be a winner, even without bringing a TV crew along.

Up here in the Northern CA woods a sasquatch hunter is more liable to run into a rural meth lab or a booby-trapped pot farm than he is to find a bigfoot. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Well, there is that lonely grey wolf which came in recently from Oregon. It's said he's looking for a mate, but he'd do better with a dating service, as wolves (aside from him)are definitely no longer in CA.

Floral, you're in northern CA too? Niki is too. I'm in OR where the wolf came from.

I don't believe in Bigfoot, but its fun anyways. I could be persuaded otherwise with evidence.

Floral...a wolf made it down here?!?! KEWL! Do get ready; they're coming. Since being protected (somewhat!) their range has been incresing, and it's predicted they'll get here eventually. Cougars returned in CA once they were protected (enough so they've been trying to remove their protection); we got our first definite cougars a few years back (previously there was a constant rumor of one on the Mountain, but few sightings). Now there are signs and they're seen now and again. And the coyotes are new, too, we never had them before, but now people have to be careful about keeping their cats and small dogs indoors at night in numerous places. Last Summer I could hear them singing up on the hill behind us (since I sleep outdoors), and neighbors said they were coming right down the street and taking cats, even at dawn and dusk! They seem to have moved on from HERE, but we see them up on the Divide where we walk the dogs, they are a permanent fixture up there. Luckily the huskies are big enough...they CHASE the coyotes, or go up and sniff them, they sniff the huskies, and we go on our way.

So wolves are headed our way, which will absolutely send me into spasms of joy...I was thrilled enough when the cats arrived, then the coyotes, but to have WOLVES around? Be still my heart!!

From what you wrote, I'm betting you live somewhere in NORTH Northern Ca, yes? Got friends up Arcata way and Humboldt, so the mention of pot farms is familar. Used to smoke nothing but Humboldt Gold until I got my "official okey dokey" for medical pot, and my favorite place in the whole WORLD is Prairie Creek. So where is 'ya?

I use to live in the Pacific NW as well, and while I loved the 'idea' of Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, etc... evidence would be nice.

The exciting world of storage facility auctions. Folks really do store everything from treasure to trash, and then inexplicably, stop rental payments and leave it all , to be auctioned.

Now that might actually be interesting. Amazing things could surface, and if individual lots are focused on individually, it could provide insights into a family's history. Neat.

I just watched a new ep of F-Bigfoot and I'm sad to say that the luster had worn off a bit. I think what I experienced is the mini-rapture of the marathon viewing session, when you watch more than 2 hours of something with another 2 hours to go, the mind is hypnotized into believing that nothing other than 'Squatchin' and being around 'Squatchers is real or has any meaning. It was so peaceful and beautiful.

Storage Wars on A&E is much like our beloved Firefly. Here you have a bunch of wily and scraggly veteran independents who have taken the concept of "take jobs as they come" and "never have to live under the heel...again" and made it a reality for themselves.

I really do love the show. The antiques and collectables they find are amazing. They all kind of hate each other, so they plot and scheme constantly to outsmart the others. Recently the largest find ever was discovered in an abandoned locker in Calif. Several million dollars worth of Spanish gold coins and relics.

The bidder's personalities make the show what it is....loveable and funny, much like our long-gone Firefly.

Yep Jong. It's not unlike American Pickers, or any number of similar shows, where 'independents' sink or swim on their own skills.

I think Storage Wars is in a class all by itself. It's the only one of its' ilk I can watch, and boy can I watch.....two hours last night with some new episodes. A couple of days during the Holidays I think I watched over 10 episodes in a row.

Did you see Barry last night? He took a set of Ludwig drums over to his "friend's" house for evaluation. His friend was none other than Stewart (The Police) Copeland, who horsed around with crazy Barry and then signed the set, making it all the more valuable.

I haven't seen much of the mysterious and beautiful Nabila before, but if she's going to be around this year the show will even get better, although I am already a big Brandi fan.

The SW cast of characters match up to BDH's as:

Barry is Mal
Darryl is Book
Brandi is Kaylee
Nabila is Inara
Jarred is Jayne
Dave is Badger
Dan is the guy who sold Mal Serenity
New guy with chicken prop is Wash
Hispanic guy with dark glasses and silk shirts is Fanty

Actually Ron Paul wrote about it in his newsletter about twenty years ago.

Turns out he spent a lot of time with his head up his ass partly because Bigfoot is so nice to talk to.

Her husband is slowly molding her into something else, something that I find harder to identify with. She's so passive and she's like a chamillion, always has been. She melds to whomever she's around, but since they live out of state she's only around him now and so she becomes more like him as time goes by and there are things I can't say, things I can't do with her anymore because of the circumstance. Its bad enough that they live out of state because of him, but that happens, but I'm going to have to stop going once a year to visit eventually because being in his presence is getting too stressful for me. This year I'm putting my foot down, consequences be hanged, and saying I can't visit unless I know I get at least some alone time with her each day. Last year it was set up to do that but then his work schedule changed and he was home all day on Tue and I wanted to just disappear, it was torture. He threatened to take the wwhole time off next time so "we could all spend the whole time together, won't that be fun?". Can you tell that I don't like him?

That's sad RionaEire. Unfortunately, things/friends have a way of changing, friends rarely last forever, especially when they get married. People grow, evolve, change. It's just the way of it. I used to reject that notion too but then I look at my own situation, I've gone through whole groups of friends for various reasons (changed jobs, moved, etc). I bet your Dad has some sage advice on the subject. And fwiw, if you put your foot down you may drive your friend away completely. That's my bent penny's worth of internet advice!
