Just for fun, while we're all paying attention to politics, the biggest solar storm in years is passing by right now. Some neat images from the current solar storm:

This long-exposure image shows the creation of new solar active regions following the solar flare eruption. The loop structures are made of superheated plasma, each one several times larger than the size of the Earth

On Sunday, a solar flare caused a portion of the plasma in the Sun's atmosphere to break off and fly out into space at a speed of about 5 million miles an hour. Seen here is the coronal mass ejection (CME) ejection of the plasma cloud breaking off from the sun.

The solar flare that spawned the storm was rated as a M8.7, very close to the highest “X” class capable of large scale disruptions to the power grid and health risks to astronauts.

Apparently, tho' by far not the biggest one we've had (or will have), it potentially made for some great Northern Lights as far South as New York, and caused polar flights to be altered. Reminds us how small our petty squabbles really are.

Look at the pretties !

But yeah, our problems, and the sum total of mankind's history , could be wiped out in a blink of a eye, if ( when ) our sun, or a near by star , decides to get fussy and throw a fit.

The situation flared up and was getting real hot but we blasted right on through. The kind of event you'll talk about for ions, stand out prominent in your memory. It was shock and aurora. Don't think we'll ever forget that reminder of how dangerous the pun is.

Well, if satellite communications and wireless goes out, it'll certainly be an ionic moment.

Did you guys know that the Aurora makes noises? Byte and I are the only people I know of who have heard it. I have this theory that only really different people can hear it. Maybe I'm wrong, have you guys ever heard it?

Emphasis on "trying."

Also, Riona is right. The aurora really does make a sound. I suspect it's only if you have really good hearing, because it's often very faint and also somewhat low pitched. If hearing is damaged or deteriorated, you probably won't hear it.

Also, apparently the solar storm touched off some really pretty ones. There's even been red and golds, which are rarer for an aurora and only happen when they're particularly intense. (these are mostly showing the green and white, though in one of them you can see a hint of purple)
