Anyway, Chris, I'm sorry to say that I agree with Pris. We - collectively- all 7 billion+ of us- are facing a self-created armageddon. It could - and probably will- come at us from multiple fronts, because of our reliance on things like global transportation and tight supply chains and advanced technology. A breakdown in one critical area: food distribution, communication, electrical distribution etc will be instantly transmitted through the system.

We SHOULD be coming together. The problems that we - all 7 billion+ of us- have created or allowed to fester, can only be solved by the engagement of most of us. But what are we doing? Instead of fighting our problems we are fighting each other, or sticking our heads in the sand, or fantasizing about solutions which will never work. Humans ARE capable of long-term planning, just look at Germany and the Nordic countries, but there needs to be massive broad scale education and enough time to think about the future. And that's one thing TPTB hate: a population that might be educated enough and have enough time to think. Because then TPTB would B no longer.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Pris really DID say that, hunh?

"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

One of my favorite quotes ever, and on my list of all time favorite movies.

Speaking of 'really stupid and we're all going to die', which I agree with, I caught a movie on TV - Manhattan Project - which was way way better than War Games.

We'll survive if we are clever enough to do so. If we do not, we'll become extinct and lost to time as another evolutionary dead end, one that could not even compete in timelines at least with the dinosaurs, who were pretty damned stupid apparently.

No need to destroy a meteor, since it's harmless. It's only the meteorITES you have to worry about!

But really, worry more about comets and asteroids. There's some thinking that either would be pretty easy to shatter if known about far enough in advance. Latest ideas are that asteroids are loosely-held "flying rockpiles" which aren't really solid objects, but piles of individual - and much smaller - rocks held loosely in a group by gravity. As such, a nuclear detonation in the vicinity of said rockpile would be enough to scatter it, deflecting it from our path. Or sending even more pieces hurtling into Earth...

'Course, as with most things, the knowing it's there is the key.

Hello,

I used to study the effects of nuclear munitions in space, as a point of interest to sci-fi writing.

Turns out if you want to stop a space object, being in its 'vicinity' with a nuclear weapon isn't enough. You want to be in physical contact with it, or preferably inside of it.

Then there's the problem that we tend to detect most potential Earth-killers either when it's too late to stop them, or even after they've passed us by.

And that's really the only argument a small government person can make for spending money on space. A significant investment in space is the only way to prevent Earthkillers from harming us. We currently don't have the capability, and it would take many trillions of dollars to develop it. If Defense is a government job, that is.

They were at least as smart as birds. And secondly, the problem was more an issue that the dinosaurs were already occupying all the major ecological niches more than the mammalian set up is bad.

I also posit that greed comes from the reptile brain.

As for super volcanoes, famine, global warming, aging sun, and meteors, I again counter: space travel.

Hi Onnjerah, even though we fight sometimes and disagree a lot everyone in here has been really nice to me. This is a free speech zone, which means there are no moderators or rules about what you can and can't post. We self regulate in here and one must gage what one wants to say by gaging the response of one's comrades. If you don't mind someone thinking you're mean or whatever you can say whatever you want to. Its a good way to have a forum because we manage our own selves instead of having some selected person do it for us.

A Oon a chara, You'll survive, this forum is just a weird slightly distorted version of reality, so people get angry, feelings get hurt, people make up and are friends, people don't fancy each other personally but can make it work for the sake of the community, people start out hating each other and then come to some sort of understanding, people make you smile, it all happens right here and you're welcome to be part of it.
