from CNN ( http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/14/politics/payroll-tax-negotiation/index.h

Quote:

Congressional negotiators reached a tentative deal Tuesday to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits while avoiding a fee cut for Medicare doctors, according to Republican legislators and aides.
The framework deal followed a key Republican concession Monday and could receive the endorsement of a House-Senate conference committee on Wednesday.

What?? No blackmailing? No hostage taking? What happened to the GOP????
Quote:

However, some conservative House Republicans expressed concerns about the potential agreement and said they were unsure if they would support it.
Ahhh, there we go...the world is normal again.
Quote:

"It's the art of a deal. I mean, it's a compromise," said Rep. Steve Latourette, R-Ohio. "So you have people that didn't get a 100% of what they wanted."
"Compromise"?!?! You mean they actually remembered what the word means?
Quote:

"I think they have to work out all the details, but I think the big scope has been agreed to," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters. However, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, was less enthusiastic, saying "this is not our preferred way" to deal with the issues and adding that details were still being studied.
Ahhh, normalcy returns, poor Boehner who knows how politics work being undercut by stupid Cantor and his naive Tea Party neophytes.
Quote:

On Monday, House GOP leaders dropped their demand that any extension of the tax cut be offset by spending cuts elsewhere in the budget. The decision was a sharp turnaround for House Republicans, who previously argued that a failure to fully pay for the tax break would be financially reckless.
The debate over whether and how to extend the tax cut has been a political loser so far for the Republicans, who had publicly questioned its value last year. Democrats have gleefully highlighted the GOP's reluctance, using the issue to portray Republicans as defenders of the rich who are indifferent to the plight of the middle class.

Political analysts believe the showdown over the payroll holiday has eroded GOP strength on the party's core issue of lower taxes. Fearing negative repercussions, Republican leaders have now backtracked on the issue twice: dropping their opposition to the two-month extension last December and dropping their insistence on paying for a longer extension on Monday.

"I think the GOP has read the writing on the wall when it comes to the payroll tax cut," said Brown University political scientist Wendy Schiller. "Americans are benefiting from it, and to take it away at this juncture leaves them open to charges of raising taxes. ... It would severely hamper the GOP presidential nominee's effort to defeat Obama."

Johns Hopkins University political scientist Adam Sheingate called the GOP's latest move "a subtle shift in strategy precipitated by the improving economic outlook of the past few weeks."

Well, I wouldn't call it "subtle", given all the past disasters we've endured, more of an amazing turnaround, and I'm not holding my breath that it continues. Nonetheless, every time we avoid one of those massive fights, I'm grateful. Gee, y'think the Republicans have FINALLY read the writing on the wall? Or am I being naive?
Quote:

"By agreeing to a deal, the GOP can claim some credit for extending the holiday," Sheingate said. "Failing to extend the payroll tax would not only be unpopular, it would shift some of the responsibility for the economy back on the Republicans. This is to be avoided at all costs since the GOP (election) strategy rests almost entirely on Obama's handling of the economy."
Oh, of course, the election...silly me. In other words, once the election is over, they'll go right back to stonewalling...or, as the other article wrote, "doubling down".

I am SO enjoying this election year!
Quote:

It remains unclear if the increasingly conservative House GOP caucus will be willing to go along with the tentative deal. House Republican freshmen, elected on a tidal wave of tea party support in 2010, have made deficit reduction their top priority and repeatedly insisted that any new initiatives be fully paid for.

Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Florida, said discussion Tuesday night in the House Republican caucus was "heated" over not paying for the payroll tax cut extension, which he called "bad policy," while fellow Floridian Rep. Allen West, a tea party conservative, said "this doesn't look like a good deal to me."

Ahhh, the world rights itself once again.
Quote:

Veteran political analyst Norm Ornstein warned that the GOP leadership's repeated maneuvering on the issue could end up backfiring.

House Republican leaders have been "trying to make the best of crummy situation," Ornstein told CNN. But tea party Republicans "don't care" if fighting the tax cut extension is "a political loser. They don't like the payroll tax cut and now the (leadership's) sin is being compounded by saying they won't pay for it."

This "could play out in ways that make the life of Boehner (and other Republican leaders) a little less comfortable," he predicted.

There we go, same old/same old, but I had to giggle at "make Boehner's life a LITTLE less comfortable". Like he's even known what "comfortable" means the past three years?

Ain't politics FUN, tho'?

Hello,

If I understand the gist of this...

We are going to continue the tax cut...

But we are not going to reduce our spending?

I love tax cuts, but I hate borrowing money to pay for them.

Yup.

Under the agreement that would cover the rest of 2012, the nearly $100 billion payroll tax cut would not be paid for -- a consequence of the parties' inability to compromise on either new taxes or offsetting spending cuts, said top congressional aides from both parties.
The Repubs would still rather DIE than increase revenue by a single penny, and the Dems have already cut a lot, so appear to be finally drawing a line in the sand. How much more would you have them cut, rather than tax those who are swimming along happily by even a teeeny bit, while the rest of us sink? How about we cut education further? Or put MORE of a burden on cities and states? We couldn't, of course, let the Bush cuts expire which were supposed to expire LAST YEAR...gawd forbid, eh?

Yep. This will cost around $100 billion a year, and there is no offsetting reduction elsewhere, nor any increase in revenue to pay for it.

And I'm afraid that tying unemployment insurance extensions to the payroll tax cuts, as Democrats want to do, will wind up making unemployment a permanent entitlement, as the reduced rates of payroll tax now appear to be.

F-ing brilliant.

"Keep the Shiny side up"

ETA: The way I figure it, using the IRS SOI tables for the 2009 tax year as a basis, the Buffett Rule tax of 30% on folks earning over $1 million would net about an additional $40-45 billion a year. So it'd pay less than half the payroll tax reduction alone.

Hello,

Whether it's increasing revenue or cutting expenditures, the bottom line is you don't want to spend more than you make. That reality seems so simple to me that it's hardly worthy of argument. Dems want to increase revenues, Reps want to cut taxes. Fine. We all have our take on that.

But the solution isn't to do neither, or to do both ineffectually. That just screws the country. It's not a solution. A working compromise must make sure money out doesn't exceed money in. This 'compromise' is simply all of the politicians abrogating their responsibilities during an election year. Both the Reps and the Dems are failing utterly to protect our future. I don't see how any of us should be happy about it.

Yes, god forbid, because the Bush INCOME taxes are different from the PAYROLL taxes here, which are what fully funds the SSI 'lockbox '. ( insert laugh track here )

SSI is already a broken ponzi scheme. That's not either debatable or the issue here. But when you defund the ONE source of income for that program, the Payroll tax, by cutting it in half..... hell, you know all this. You and the Dems are simply playing dumb, acting as if this is some sort of a GOOD thing, when in fact, it's only poking more holes in the ship that's already going down.

The tax 'holiday' has long since expired, but just like Obama in the White House, it's party party party, all night long! Screw what's good for the country. These idiots in govt made this monster, and now they've conned folks into believing that this is a good thing. It's reckless beyond belief.

It's QUITE debatable, but I'm not stupid enough to buy into your bait.

And yes, we definitely need both taxes and cuts...like I said, the Dems have already begun the cuts, so where's the other side of the "compromise"??
