"TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) — New York City's Police Department is facing mounting criticism of its secret surveillance of Muslims
across the Northeast, with civil liberties groups demanding an investigation & New Jersey's governor accusing the NYPD of arrogantly
acting as if "their jurisdiction is the world." ...

"New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has argued that the NYPD's actions are legal and necessary in a city under constant threat of
another terrorist attack like the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and that police have the right to travel beyond the city limits to do their job.

"9/11 was not prevented because law enforcement agencies weren't talking to each other ..."

If you're tempted to give NYPD the benefit of the doubt on this one, just try this: Repeat the thread title to yourself, removing the word "Muslim" from it, and see if you'd be fine with that.

"NYPD Spies on Citizens Near and Out of State."

Anyone got a problem with that?

Oh I think we've gone beyond benefit of the doubt here, beyond even civil-rights violation.

I wonder if the RICO Act could be applied, cause it damn well ought to be.

I've never liked the Patriot Act etc. We need to make sure that we don't turn into the very governments and people we don't like.

I think it's a bit late for that, Riona - but I am all ears for suggestions on how to take back the ground we've lost.

Maybe when its time for the Patriot Act to be re upped next time everyone could protest a bunch? I know that its really hard once something is in effect, to get rid of it. But its a bad thing and it really shouldn't continue, especially since it hasn't succeded in nabbing oodles of terrorists, all it seems to do is cause trouble for ordinary folk.
