Ineffective against me though, between an ugly history and vetting anime for peoples kids I have a ludicrous tolerance for cute-sappy-sweet type stuff, which I myself have "weaponized" a time or two - having threatened the odd forum member with the intro to Snow Fairy Sugar at least once that I recall, hehehehe.

I've had my moments. Mostly in RL though, not so much here.

I am curious about Riona's methods. There's lots of shady area, like say if poster A tells poster B "that's an idiotic idea!" is that an insult? I don't think it is, because the idea is being put down, not the poster. I don't have a problem with wording like that, as long as it's followed with an argument as to said idiocy of said idea.

Problem is, folks take it beyond shooting down ideas or view points. Yep, me included.

And if there's not the direct insult, there's the bearing of false witness, which may even be worse, accusing others of things they're not guilty of being or saying.

At least Riona was attempting to point out the obvious, the larger issue of incivility here. Props.

I'm away every weekend, shocked that no one has figured that out yet, I never post on Thurs. evening, Fri. Sat. or daytime Sun. because I'm with my dad and don't have access to an applicable computer. I wasn't actually at my grandma's house this weekend Byte, we go every few weeks and usually only stay one night. But that is neither here nor there.

It turned out to be lucrative to let this set for a few days, though that wasn't the original plan.

So I only included incidents where we called each other names, calling politicians or radio hosts names didn't count. Also as Mal4 said I only included direct name calling, not things like "that's a stupid idea."

So the winner will surprise you all, she came out of left field though I wasn't surprised. The winner isssssss

Kiki! with 19 name calling incidents. I wasn't too surprised since I find her to be a rather mean individual, i think the kids in her neighborhood may think of her house as the scary place where they dare each other to step on the lawn and see what happens. But anyways.

Second place was Raptor with 13 incidents. Third place was Story with 8 incidents. Fourth place was Niki with five. Signe had two and KPO, Frem, Magon's and Quicko only had one.

Story's names were the meanest and showed the highest lack of taste. Raptor's were mainly against Story, Kiki's were mainly against Raptor.

This was done purely for curiosity's sake, I call names occasionally myself so I'm not saying that occasional name calling is so bad. But it does get excessive, especially when someone keeps using the same name over and over again, sometimes multiple times in the same post as Kiki is known to do.

I did not include shortenings of people's names, such as Rap. I did not include the adding of a y to the end of people's names, such as Quicky, though that one perhaps I should have included because it can mean something else, but I couldn't have one standard for one person's name and not for another, so merely adding a y to the end did not count since its common practice even when insult is not meant.

Well as I said before, Rione, I think your methods lack subtelty. Name calling (and I am surprised I got one as I usually steer away from that) is only one form of abuse on the net. I think you may have missed the more pernicious and devious of abuse that takes place here, and therefore I find your experiment lacks any real value, except for perhaps your own amusement.

Well then, I didn't see that comin'. Though it's some small consolation that my remarks weren't " the meanest " , I suppose.

Clearly some folks find fault with this, but I think it's an interesting exercise. And anyone who doesn't like your methods could certainly carry it out again with their own rules, right?

Yes, I'm surprised it came out Kiki, as I've never found her particularly offensive. Raptor of course comes as no surprise, nor do the others. I'm fourth, eh? Well, surprised it wasn't more, actually, tho' I guess if you're only counting DIRECT insults, that makes sense. Actually, given all the totals are that low (I think you said over one week?), I have to agree that the "study" is flawed. There are so many ways people here are offensive to one another, direct insults doesn't really say much in the long run. The one time I tried it, I think I included all kinds of nastiness, not just direct name calling. In which case, those numbers could have come from just ONE post!

Nonetheless, interesting in its way.

"... as I've never found her particularly offensive."

My name-calling is pretty low key, like 'idiot' and 'red-neck'; not sure if 'little Rappy' counts, in which case pretty much every post to or about him has an insult. Also, I don't JUST name-call: I argue the point and THEN name-call. So, due to being low-key and embedded in an actual response, I can see how it slides underneath notice.

But yep, as I think about it, pretty much every post to or about little Rappy contains a demeaning slight.

Also, I think generic name calling against whole groups of people - feminazis - isn't counted. As I understand it, it has to be directed against a specific someone here. If generic name-calling counted, I'm sure it would change the results.

ETA: I think Riona mistakes my asocial uncensored expression of what I think as 'meanness'. Apparently, I need to cover up my thoughts in socially acceptable fuzzy pink fluff.

Riona, if you were keeping count on yourself, how would you score this? Would a whole paragraph on how awful someone is and how whole made-up little story on their awfulness count for more than a single word? Are we to take your position as being the judge and exemplar of what is good and right, and the arbiter of what is wrong?

Just curious what you would think of this post if someone else - someone you didn't like and for whom you wouldn't make mental excuses - had posted it.

Heck, even *I* saw that! Niki, this isn't trolling YOU, this is basically how nerds flirt. Kind of. But not quite. It's a weird net-cultural thing, and I'm not sure it really has a name yet. But it's something akin to how kids will flirt, or make friends, or young adults courting, in an odd way. "Oh yeah? Well take a look at THIS, then!" "Ha! That's nothing! I can top that, easy!" It's part competition, part bonding exercise - trying to one-up each other while also trying to gain the respect and admiration of the other.

And before Byte gets all weird about it, it's not really sexual, either. Flirting isn't, always.

Niki a chara, Byte is playing with Frem here. I haven't seen the other thread so I don't know what she's doing in there, maybe playing with Frem again?

Kiki, I never said I don't name call, in fact there were an incident or two when I really wanted to but didn't, I probably should have and then included myself in the tally, but since I knew about the tally it seemed weird to include myself, so I decided not to namecall. I agree that namecalling is by no means the only way people can be mean, evidenced by my story about little kids in your neighborhood. But its the only way I could think of that would be definitive and quantifiable and not-so-subjective.

If I scored based on any unkind energy then it would have been problematic because that is subjective. For instance Niki thinks Byte is being mean in this thread, but she's playing a game with Frem. So marking people down every time I perceive that they are being mean would have been flawed. So I chose something simple and quantifiable to measure with. I agree it isn't a perfect study because, after all, the cleverest of folk know how to be mean without name calling, ergo namecalling isn't the be all and end all of meanness. But it is a simple and measurable offense which can be tabulated.

I was surprised at the smallness of the numbers too by the way.

Story's insults were the meanest in my opinion.

And yes Kiki I did include "little Raptor" in there because of the pagorative "little". If you'd have just called him Rappy I would not have counted any of them because as explained above I didn't want to include the simple adding of a y at the end of someone's name, because sometimes that's just a shortener mechanism. True sometimes its an insult but it would not have been objective for me to decide each time which it was, so I didn't use it at all in the tallying.

Note to self: Come up with some pity-baiting sig line so everyone sees how persecuted poor wittle me is. Then I can be just like Rappy!

SOFTIE.
  next post, Bytemite:
(3)Also, I'm really a GIRL, and I just act female on the internet to screw with your head.
(4)Did you see that are women people thread? LOL! I just had to set up for the deluge of responses that I won't answer.
I add: Flirt! Libidinous Libertine Lecher!

Those posts are directly below Frem's, so one might guess they're aimed at him.
Line 3: Byte likes to act and screw with heads.
Line 4: In the Are Women People thread, she was screwing with everyone else's head while Frem didn't post.

Scroll down to Niki's: "I find that rather offensive, since at the time I was trying to have an honest debate..."
Further down,
Niki: "Personally, Byte, now I think you've lost it. I don't know what all that stupid shit above is about,
and I'm pretty damned disgusted you played us and were as offensive as you were to a number of us.
"You've definitely lost my respect, and I thought well of you. Go play your game with others, I have no use for
trolls. There's nothing amusing, to me, in what you are doing. Just stupid."

I heartily agree, except for this. Byte's sudden and inevitable betrayal smacks of immaturity.
She may be a teen=GIRL or a slow 20's. I think she was playing all of us in the other thread.
She gave a sign of her character here: "Yes, she was messing with you all a little. I'm very proud."

"Pest" may apply.

I explained what happened in the other thread. The comments above were a call back to HKCAV calling me a troll in that thread, and also sarcastic. And, as said, I was playing with Frem, who did in fact post in that thread.

You don't know me Oonj, you haven't been here long. I'm a fairly neutral person who will take sides in a debate based on what I consider logical or consistent.

Niki knows me better. Far better, at least, than to accuse me like this. I once donated money to Niki so that she could go help with the Gulf Oil Spill, and when she first came here, she was under attack by actual trolls who followed her from the board they chased her from, and I stood up for her.

As for a "sign of my character," this is a thread about an attempt to measure the amount of personal insults and trolling seen around the board, and I made a joke about Riona making us wait a little before posting our results. I've been playing along with the theme of the thread, which is trolling. And, perhaps you didn't notice, but my name wasn't among any of the people throwing around personal insults in Riona's results.

Now, I'm sorry that my attitude came across so harsh in the other thread; it was unintended, and as I explained to HKCAV, there is a BIG difference between serious disagreement and with trolling.

But these accusations are simply untrue, and based on a misunderstanding.

Yup, I'm with Byte. I recognize her sense of humor, skewed though it may be, because mine is just as odd and quirky, but in different ways.

She WAS NOT TRYING TO OFFEND. She was playing a bit of a game, and some who didn't get it got put off by it, but needlessly, really.

Byte has hinted before that she's wound too tight, or thinks she's crazy, and I don't get that from her at all. She's just eccentric, a bit, and it did my wizened old soul some good to see her just engaging in some good-natured horse-assing around, just for the pure joy of it. It's something we should probably all do more of, and encourage in others.

Anyone here ever heard of 4Chan? There's some truly offensive stuff posted there, but it's really done in jest.

Kwicko, I appreciate the effort, but it's not going to work. Everyone either thinks I'm irrational and my interpretations have no basis, or they think I'm just attacking everyone crazily and trolling.

I'm going back to the "I give up" plan.

Bah. You're someone worth knowing, Byte, and you have a voice worth hearing. I feel bad for those who can't hear you or won't listen, because it's their loss, not yours. Don't forget it, ever, and don't hesitate to speak up or speak out.

Yep I thought the same thing. I guess I've found that Rione can be pretty judgemental sometimes on these boards, and in my mind 'let he who is without sin, cast the first stone....' etc etc.

Actually on the whole, I find this to be a fairly civil board. It generally doesn't generate to more than 'little rappy' or 'teabagger' 'socialist' 'feminazi'.

Not to say people don't get snarky or snappy with each other...

Oh come on you guys, it was just for fun. I'm not saying that people can't call names, as stated above. Just that it seemed like a fun idea and I can't measure meanness in any other way that seems quantifiable and tabulatable.

I didn't realize that my story about neighborhood kids would actually hurt your feelings Kiki. If it does I'm sorry I said it like that. I didn't realize that it would bother you so.

The thing about mental excuses though, I don't understand what you mean Kiki, could you tell me what you meant?

One thing I noticed about your methodology, Riona, is that it doesn't really take into account the *intent* behind some words. While I generally take some pains to NOT be directly insulting, I also am very careful with my words, and have an ability to be quite insulting and condescending while also not engaging in name-calling. This came about through writing, and was honed through years on several forums where cursing and direct attacks were verboten . Thus, if you wanted to let someone know that they were contemptible, you really had to work at it and choose your words carefully. This place is a free-fire zone, but I've often thought it would have a better grade of insults if it weren't, because it would force people to think up non-profane ways to bicker at each other.

Some of the best insults are the ones that the insulted party won't even figure out until they're in their car on the way home from the party. ;)

As I said before, I thought it was a fun exercise anyway, though. I was a bit surprised I didn't score higher, honestly. And nobody says you're not allowed to engage in name-calling if you'd like.

S'funny the correllation of ironies there though, since their unofficial mascot kinda reminds me of Byte, just a lil bit...
