On March 12th, 2012 at 7pm protesters from Occupy DC gathered at McPherson Square with the purpose of voicing their discomfort with the signing, by President Obama, of H.R. 347.

H.R. 347, also known as the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act, passed the House 399-3 last week, and on Thursday it was signed into law by the President. H.R. 347 is a modified version of an old law which restricted entering or blocking public areas closed off by the Secret Service while an individual, under their protection, is passing through; The law also included major public events.

Occupy movements all over the U.S. are well aware of this law as it has been used to shunt protestors at major political events into “free speech zones”. Police may use this law at their discretion when events such as the G8 or other bilateral conferences are taking place.

The modified version added a few areas, within the District of Columbia, to the federally protected areas in the list. In addition, the new version got rid of part of the language from the original law, which noted that protesters were entering a protected area “willfully and knowingly” H.R. 347 deletes the word “willfully,” meaning that prosecutors no longer need to prove that someone knew what they were doing was illegal to convict them. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-761010?hpt=hp_bn1

Well, at least someone's speaking up. I'll bet most Americans don't even know about H.R. 347--I'd like to believe more would be up in arms about it if they did.

Protests might not solve things, but at least they bring things to the attention of the people.

There's that, also, making it personal seems to have a better effect.

Several local politicos have recently been nudged into better behavior by protestors who instead of gathering in a convenient target miles away, appear out of the masses in small groups and deploy their signs while stating their greivances.

Is there an IMPLIED threat there ?
Well hell yes, just as a thrown pie is, effectively, an IMPLIED threat, but it's also a statement that the person or persons in question are willing to negotiate, cause it DIDN'T go there, you understand ?

Anyhows, makin it personal to em via the social equivalent of a DDOS attack seems to have a better effect and be much harder for the usual counter-tactics to be applied to.

I still say it was so unnecessary to alter that law, they're just doing it to be mean to protestors and boss them around.

Personally, I think they've done it for 2 other reasons.

1. To keep protesters out of the spotlight & hope folks at home will forget about 'em.

2. If any particular protesters appear to be influencial, arrest 'em, shut 'em up.

Yup, Oonj, pure and simple. We see over and over that the powers Bush put in place will most likely go further and further with every subsequent President. While his administration (definitely not the first) used police to arrest people merely wearing anti-Bush t-shirts, Obama's codified it into law. We'll have to wait and see what the next Prez and subsequent ones take it, damnit.

If Occupy has achieved nothing else, at least they've brought things like this, Corporate Personhood, A.L.E.C., 99% and others to the attention of those who are paying attention, and in some cases brought them into the national conversation. It's a beginning.

Once protesters are safely deposited in the “free speech zones” ...
(THIS is a free speech zone. Everywhere else is NOT a free speech zone. Watch your speech, Traitor!)

Then it is time to curtail freedom of the press. Anyone who covers, photographs, interviews participants
at a peaceful protest should be arrested for inciting the public opinion and spreading information.

There is a story I hope to tell once I'm familiar with the facts. There was a failed coup against Hugo
Chavez of Venezuela in 2002. As I understand it, the coup failed because thousands and thousands of
people marched to his prison and faced down the army.

But if someone here knows more about this than I, I'd like to read it. People DO have Power!

I think they've done it to include prosecution for trespassing on White House and VP's residence property in the Federal statute, rather than leaving it to the District of Columbia courts, as was previously the case.

Once again you will reach just as faaaaar as necessary to rationalize something. It's obvious what it is, and it ain't about the White House.

Yeah, I saw Clooney's (and his father's) arrest. Good for him, tho' I doubt anything will be improved in the Sudan, sadly...
