BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- The two quakes that jolted the Bay Area Monday morning were related, one seismologist says.

The quakes "would be considered cause-effect related because they occurred so close together in time and in the same spatial location," said Robert Uhrhammer of the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory.

The two earthquakes, which occurred along the Hayward Fault, struck in an area known as the El Cerrito cluster early Monday morning. A magnitude 2.9 hit at 5:33 a.m., and a magnitude 4.0 struck in nearly the same location seconds later.

Jim asked if I felt it in the Outback; I didn't, and I was semi-awake then. El Cerrito is a couple of miles across the Bay from us, so I'm surprised we didn't feel the second one a bit more. Just another day in Crazy California...what's a shake or two?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Er... maybe this belongs in the KPO predictions thread, but I predict there will be a larger one in a neighboring fault... mag 5 or more... in the next two months.

So now we can all see how well my lucky bunion is working!

I'm in on that prediction, as it's one I've made myself in KPO's thread.

I have concerns that such an occurrence may also touch off earthquakes inland.

The last week was shakier than usual with a few at 5 or more.

Yeah, I heard about the Japan 'quake, and it was big enough to notice. Been hesitant to listen to it, lest it might be worse than I'd like to know. (chicken!) Hope it did no more damage to Fukushima, that's enough of a mess!

As to our little guy touching off more, I guarantee that's no predictor. We get little guys like that all the time, to the point where they rarely mention them, and it doesn't portend anything further 99% of the time.

As has been pointed out, there are 'quakes every day around the world, and big ones regularly enough to impact lots of people's lives. It's just the way Mamma Earth shakes herself off. Man is so tiny in the greater scheme of things...heck, maybe she's trying to shake US off her back, and I wouldn't blame her!

Poor Mexico City...they really take it on the chin when it comes to 'quakes, don't they? It's just par for the course, unfortunately; some places get hit with a lot more regularity than others, some places get hit harder when they do. I hope they can recover...again...until the next one.

The ring of fire has always been active, and I assume always will be; if you're trying to say it portends something, I seriously doubt it.

Warships on standby after Indonesian quake

CHENNAI/KOLKATA: Waves of panic swept through India's eastern
coast on Wednesday afternoon as cities were rocked by tremors
and repeated alerts of a possible tsunami being triggered by
a massive earthquake of 8.6 magnitude off the Indonesian coast.

The alert generated memories of the devastating tsunami of 2004:
in India, more than 15,500 had died & scores of coastal villages
& fishing hamlets were swept away in the tsunami. As the tsunami
warning was sounded on Wednesday, soon after 2pm, the dreadful
apprehension of a repeat catastrophe set in deep.

The anxiety lifted only around 3pm when the tsunami didn't hit
Greater Nicobar where massive waves were supposed to reach within
half an hour of the quake at 2.08pm.

Word came in that this quake was different - this time the plates
had not moved vertically but horizontally, and this prevented
displacement of huge volumes of sea water. By evening, there was
a distinct sense of relief.

Whew. That's a nasty one...8.6. I'm glad it didn't cause a tsunami, the 'quake by itself was QUITE bad enough!

That tsunami in 04 was a huge one, and I remember that after a couple months the Indonesian government shued out all the aid workers etc. I guess its up to them, but I hope they worked hard to help everyone themselves, since they didn't want others to do it.

We had some little micros on Mt. Hood yesterday, but nothing that matters.

Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey said that for the three
decades until 2000, seismic events in the nation's midsection averaged
21 a year. They jumped to 50 in 2009, 87 in 2010 and 134 in 2011.

"Our scientists cite a series of examples for which an uptick in
seismic activity is observed in areas where the disposal of wastewater
through deep-well injection increased significantly," David Hayes,
the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior, said in a
blog post yesterday, describing research by scientists at the U.S.
Geological Survey.

Mexico volcano continues to rumble, could become more active =>

SANTIAGO XALITZINTLA, Mexico - Mexican officials Wednesday said there is
a chance the Popocatepetl volcano might become more active, but local
residents have no reason to worry.

Just last week, Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention raised
the alert level for the volcano to its third highest rating.

On Wednesday, the center's director said there is a slight chance the walls
of the volcano may erode due to volcanic activity, but said it was unlikely.

The civil protection service said people living in the area should not be
alarmed and authorities are prepared if the volcano's activity increases.

The volcano's last eruption was in 2000.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I'm skeptical that anyone can predict future earthquakes based on the activity from the other side of the ring of fire, in the Pacific. Or anywhere, for that matter. Sure, there's going to be some correlation, but to try to call this or that area, like it's some weather pattern, seems a bit much.

It's pretty common that, during any given week, there are 200-300 registered quakes around the world. This guy pointing out that there were 20 ! in one day... meh. Not really that unusual.
