Bigfoot show seeks close encounter of a hairy kind

Producers from the Animal Planet TV program "Finding Bigfoot" have been filming in the Houghton Lake area this week, looking for signs of Sasquatch.

I wouldn't even have known this save that I got a downright BIZARRE phone call this morning...
You want me to track a WHAT???!!!
*eyeroll*
I thought they were having me on, and no, I am NOT gonna play along, I got work to do here.

Now yes I do keep an open mind, having addressed whole issues which were once considered no-such-thing and urban myths, up to and including laughing my ass off when an actual Colossal Squid was found, but given that I hunt the darkness damn near every night, and can track a common housecat in pitch darkness IN THE RAIN and retrieve it in mere minutes, if there WAS a footie around here I woulda spotted him fer cryin out loud, at least spotted trailsign, you know ?

So they're wasting their time, but it's theirs to waste, I guess - joke is gonna be on me though if there really is "something" (likely a small wildcat or bear) over there and all the ruckus drives it over here.

Oh well.

Hello,

I hope someone does find a Bigfoot or Yeti. If not a live one, then at least the bones of an extinct species. It would be nice to know how all of these myths got started.

Bigfoot and Leviathan. I'm waiting on those two. Maybe the Thunderbird, too.

You got a call from Finding Bigfoot?? I say play along! It's a funny show, grt if you have a bunch of eps lined up on a rainy Sunday. The hosts says, "I've been tracking Bigfoot for 20 years..." kind of an ironic boast. "So, you have pictures then..." "Weeeeeell..."

There's plenty of hokum of course - people who have obviously faked their encounter videos - but there are also just enough eye witness accounts from what seem like upstanding reasonable folk to at least make you not rule it out completely. Sort of. It is odd how they go to all of these places and leave right when they're getting close - like why not stay and finish the job? Oh, right.

Gods, that means they'll be on season 3 - that's almost harder to believe!

Well... Most of the time...

Quote:

One of the signature Thunderbirds formations (and it’s probably used by every aerobatics group) is the Diamond. Four aircraft fly in a baseball-diamond-shaped formation only a few feet apart, and they usually maintain that formation all the way through a loop. The lead pilot guides the formation, while the other three have their eyes locked onto him, oblivious to all else, including their distance from the ground. Their jobs are to maintain a precise position to the lead, regardless of what he does. It’s a high-speed version of follow-the-leader.

That’s all well and good…unless something goes wrong with the lead aircraft, and that’s what seems to have happened on this particular day. Apparently #1's pitch control actuator wasn’t functioning properly and, rather than pull out of the bottom of the loop at about 100 feet above the ground, Major Norm Lowry’s plane continued into the ground.

Captains Mays, Peterson, and Melancon, piloting the #2, #3, and #4 aircraft, probably only had a split second to realize there was problem before they, too, followed their leader into the Arizona ground around Davis-Monthan AFB. All four pilots were killed instantly, and 1982's Thunderbirds season ended before it even began.

The “Diamond Crash” sparked heated debate as to the value of these exhibition teams. In less than a year, the Thunderbirds had lost millions of dollars of aircraft and, much worse, six highly-trained pilots. Families were being devastated, pilots lost, and dollars wasted on what amounted to 90 minutes of “hot-shot stunt pilot antics”.

Every state but Rhode Island has had a Bigfoot like cryptid reported. I've had an encounter in Connecticut. Can't say what it was, as it was nightime. I can say it was taller than me (6'2"), moved so fast through the cornfield I thought it might have a mini bike under it and it smelled to high heaven. It went west, I went east, as fast as my legs could carry me.

If I ever saw one in good light I'd hope to get clear photos/video. Even if armed I sure wouldn't shoot one. Science doesn't need to study one that badly. Given the number of bears killed by vehicles and the lack of Bigfoot roadkill it is either a sign of their intelligence, or evidence for their non-existence.

As far as urban wildlife, I recall a moose was wandering around Worcester, MA for a week back in the early 90's. The police and animal control authorities couldn't find it. A moose. In the city. A nurse going home from 2nd shift at Hahneman hospital hit it with her car and crippled it. Poor moose had to be put down. Wildlife can survive quite well in urban areas. It stands to reason that smart wildlife could do even better, if driven to survive in urban areas.

It is against the law in the state of Washington to shoot a Bigfoot. Just another great line from FBF.

Cavetroll - your description is exactly what I was referring to when I said that what makes the impossible idea of Bigfoot existing (given the preponderance of the lack of evidence) seem possible, are the personal accounts by people who appear to have all their marbles. It's hard to explain their stories in any other way and it's pretty easy to tell when someone feels genuine about what they saw - there's a certain kind of fear that's almost impossible to fake.

Bloodhounds won't chase most cryptids, they either run around in confused little circles, or they quiver and howl, or they run under the nearest cover and piddle in terror - in the case of a Footie it's usually confused little circles.

Proposed tactic:
Bigfoot is spotted, and when he is safely out of sight, persons who
spotted him approach the spot. Tracks are found = spoor.
Area roped off to preserve evidence.
Bloodhounds and trackers arrive within the hour. Dogs run under the
nearest cover and piddle in terror.
New dogs arrive shortly. This time, they are pitbulls. Reputed to
be good trackers and never give up.

The only drawback to my plan is the usual problem: On his own turf,
Bigfoot is smarter than trackers.
If Bigfoot is close to human intelligence, it explains a lot.

I don't personally believe that big foots exist, but if they did wouldn't it maybe be better if people weren't sure. If something new is discovered people tend to kill it and disect it, or lock it up for other people's amusement. Plus people in life need something to believe in that can't be proven, something to hope for, I think lots of people believe in cryptids because its fun to believe that something is out there, in a physical tangible form, that all our knowledge hasn't fully discovered or understood, not something like God or the fae, but something that is tangible and could someday be proven if the right people looked and tried hard enough.

That is true. But your handle indicates that you live in California, have visited

Many who own pitbulls also smoke pot, which accounts for having fantasy dogs.
I know of no one in California who hasn't "seen" a pitbull, the fleeting image of
a creature resembling a pitbull, or the ectoplasmic presence of a pitbull.

Pitbulls are seen in California far more often even than Bigfoot.

Dr. Melba Ketchum of DNA Diagnostics -[ http://www.dnadiagnostics.com/staff.html ]
was given some "bigfoot hair" to analyze.

Her findings, if significant, are to be reported in a respected science
journal before they are made public. She has written and submitted a
paper; it is now in peer review, which can take months.

I do not know Dr. Ketchum's reputation or the name of the journal.

I've read that many suspected bigfoot hair samples have been submitted
to DNA labs over the years. The results so far have been various known
mammals, human, and unknown primate.

That's my 9th grade science teacher, Mr. Hadly.

Benefits from watching FBF:

1. You will try and perfect your bigfoot call. At some point you will think you have it mastered. Oddly enough you will find the desire to use your call will increase in densely populated areas, especially in mall type environments where there aren't any bigfoots, but plenty of echo and potentail for chaos.

2. You will become an expert on the terrain that is suitable for bigfoot, which is everywhere, and you will call it, "squatchie," or, "very squatchie." Pretty soon you will use the word "squatchie" to mean anything "good."

3. When you are ready, you will go on night investgations with friends and high tech gear, (coolers that plug into you suv's lighter socket). Very squatchie.

4. You will reach an understanding that looking for bigfoot with friends is as valuable as almost anything else our silly species does.

Oonjerah -

Interesting video of Jane Goodall and Angelina. The 2nd part of that vid, though, got me thinking. Jane speaks of the peace and harmony, in the natural world. At first, that struck me as odd. For 100's of millions of years, life , nature in general, has been pretty brutal. Animals eat each other alive, all the time. It is, as Darwin described it, survival of the fittest. And it goes beyond mere hunting for food. Some animals, like lions and hyenas, will seemingly go out of their way to kill one another. And they also seem to hold grudges, too. I recall one documentary where a group of lions singled out one particular hyena, the daughter of the pack's matriarch, and killed her, leaving others mostly alone.

So, there's that, but then on the flip side, we have vids of animals, like bears and dogs, actually playing with each other, out in the wild. And there were other similar vids, too, of other critters, which we'd expect to ignore or eat each other, taking a friendly, social interest in each other to play.

Seems as soon as we think we've figured out the rules, the rules change! Confusing.

Very interesting.

Quite a few people claim to have seen Bigfoot close-up. Hardly anyone
believes them, of course. Most say that other than the size and the
hair, Bigfoot looks human. (Love child possible.)

According to surveys, "Do you believe in Bigfoot?" most people go with
unsure. Then there's about 30% who feel more certain: for sure Real or
for sure Nonsense.

The "for sure Real" crowd often sound to me calm if a bit defensive.

The "for sure Nonsense" crowd are usually mad, like right wingnuts.
For them, if we had a Bf corpse, or if Bigfoot walks down Main Street,
My Town, meets some citizens, does a video interview on the news,
they would still swear he doesn't exist, because they have to be right.

We recently had a neighbor here who lived in Bluff Creek, CA in her
youth. She claimed to know the local Bigfeet well. I wanted to believe
her, but she is a very uncredible person.

Nothing up close or Hollywood quality.

I like the comments: "these people can find Bigfoot but can't seem to find the focus ring on their camera..."

"Maybe Bigfoot is just blurry?"

I actually had a dream a couple nights ago in which I spotted Bigfoot. I know, crazy. I was riving down a regular country type road, mix of farmland and woods with houses dotted here and there. I looked over to my right and there, standing with his/her back to me (typical) was a bigfoot looking into one of those play forts that was close to ten feet off the ground. He was half brown and half white, top to bottom, so like even more rare :) Right at that moment for no apparent reason, I lost control of the car and it veered off into the ditch and away from the bf. I find that typical of these filmed encounters too: right when you get a glimpse, something happens to make it just so fleeting that you can't be certain. I won't be a true believer until there is better video, face forward, for an extended period of time.

Pizmo: "Did you see something?!?"

"Monitoring wildlife is both an essential aspect of any conservation effort and one of
its most difficult challenges." (there's a link.)

I moved it over to the Talk Story, Cryptid thread. Seems more appropriate there.

Has to do with forest and wild lands management, taking inventory of the wildlife there.
Forest rangers are not so much in the deep woods. Paying biologists to camp in the deep
woods is a hassel and not so practical. They needed cheap labor for the project. So they
have "hired" leeches to keep track of animals that leeches eat.

PB's "How to Hunt Bigfoot" link
"detractors (including most reputable scientists) insist that all observed phenomena could
easily be attributed to a bear, or a rogue primate, or some dude in a gorilla suit. Bring us
a body, they say, or anything that can be objectively authenticated (to date, no definitive
Bigfoot remains have been excavated)."
=============================
"Bigfoot's Hand" link:
Research Note: Comments regarding the identity of a hand of unknown origin
http://www.bigfootresearch.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&am
p;sid=170

... The hand made a small stir in June 2006. Apparently several people who are more familiar
than I with such remnants say, bear, most likely.
... No doubt, a gorilla paw would be good enough to fool me.
So if you should come across a piece of Bigfoot, how can it be proved? Most scientists, even
if they knew it was real, would not go on record with that. But you could take it to Jane
Goodall or Jeff Meldrum who're both already in the Bigfoot is Real Camp.

Otherwise, there are perfectly good reasons why Bigfoot remains are not found.

Now here's Mike after my own heart:

Hunting for Bigfoot in the Santa Cruz Mountains
Mike Rugg knows Sasquatch is out there =>
http://www.santacruz.com/news/2012/04/24/hunting_for_bigfoot_in_the_sa
nta_cruz_mountains

-( a few paragraphs from the article -- which early mentions someone with
"a thick California accent." Since we in California have no accents, I question
the reliability of the author.)-

Bigfoot hunting, it turns out, involves a lot of sitting and waiting. Membree holds
a boom mic and headphones, aiming it at the nearby mountain range. Jack has
a camcorder and audio tape recorder on constant record, just in case. Rugg looks
at different pockets of trees with a pair of night vision binoculars.

“Did you hear those coyotes?” Jack asks me. “Where there are coyotes, there’s
sasquatches.”

I put on the headphones, but can only hear coyotes.

Rugg explains to me that normally they go out much later in the night, usually
starting around 11 pm, when all the people and cars have quieted down. But even
late, he tells me, they detect very little activity most nights.

“We have some Bigfoots down here (in Santa Cruz County) that are real people-
savvy. They’ve been hanging around us for years and they know how to get around
us,” Rugg explains.
... ... ...
“I heard something about Patterson giving a deathbed confession,” one guest
remarks, referring to the infamous grainy 1967 footage Roger Patterson and Robert
Gimlin shot of a hairy lumbering creature they claimed was a Bigfoot.

“That’s a common myth,” Rugg responds. “Neither man have claimed it was a hoax.
I’ve met Robert Gimlin. He’s never made a nickel off that film. Still, to this day, he
swears he watched his buddy film a Bigfoot.”
... ... ...

It’s not surprising this topic gets Rugg riled up. He’s had his fair share of negative
experiences for being so candid about his belief in Bigfoot. The one experience
that angers him the most, he says, happened in the mid-1960s when he was a
student at Stanford. Rugg wanted to write his final paper in physical anthropology
class on Bigfoot. The professor objected, telling Rugg point blank that Bigfoot
wasn’t real.
... ... ...
Forty years later, Rugg still deals with people’s teasing and harassing.
“I get the one-finger salute quite often walking down the street,” Rugg says.

Everyone has an accent when you come from somewhere else, there seems to be no such thing as no accent. I'm sure people who speak fancy English on the BBC might think they have no accent too. I know what you mean though about feeling like people where you're from have no accent. I think everyone feels that way.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Yes, totally true RionaEire. My wife is from Thousand Oaks, she moved away when she was pretty young and on occasion she will revert and speak Cali. It's characterized by statements having an upturn at the end almost like a question.
"That band totally rocks?" Also, I notice prolonged long "e" as in, "that was funeeee." Together: "I hope it will be suneeee today?"

I don't think I have an "eeee," but an upturn at the end, yeah.
On a few occasions in distant past, I've been asked if I was born in
or have folks from Missouri. I do have, so blended accent likely.

ETA: As I'm not aware of my own accent, I'm not aware of yours, either.
No ear for it.

Oh, oops. I have heard so many people say that though "people from (insert location on the West Coast US here) don't have an accent, I don't have an accent", so I thought you were serious. Sorry.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

"Rhodesia Man" was found in 1921 by Tom Zwiglar, near what is now Kabwe, Zambia.
Might he be an ancestor of Bigfoot?

In this essay, I will present an hypothesis on the origins and nature of the
wilderness hominins variously known as Sasquatch, Bigfoot, and Skunk Ape in
the Americas, and as the possibly related Almasty or relict humans in the
Euarasian continent ...

Blog: Ketchum DNA Project Shaping Up to Be A Hoax? =>
http://www.themadskeptic.com/2012/01/ketchum-dna-project-shaping-up-to
-be.html#!/2012/01/ketchum-dna-project-shaping-up-to-be.html

It's been said a couple times (including on this blog) that 2012 is supposed
to be the year of Bigfoot. One of the main reasons some “Bigfooters” are say-
ing this is that the results of Veterinarian Dr. Melba Ketchum's DNA project
are supposed to be published this year. Once that occurs, the Bigfooters say,
the “scientific establishment” will be overturned and all kinds of unsupportable
hyperbole will be vindicated.

I'm starting to think, shudder, that this whole Ketchum DNA study might not
be the scientific venture it's being presented as.

I'll tell you why. First, there is the unwashable taint of Tom Biscardi's involve-
ment with the project. The man is a recognized fraudster and I'm surprised he
isn't in jail – his greatest stunt, probably, being the recent “Georgia Gorilla”
which turned out to be nothing be an expensive costume stuffed with animal viscera.

Follow-up on Biscardi: http://www.themadskeptic.com/2012/03/denied-from-making-cash-off-of-ge
orgia.html#!/2012/03/denied-from-making-cash-off-of-georgia.html

If it turns out that Ketchum & Biscardi are birds of a feather, I'll be disappointed
but not too surprised.
