Why does 2012 look a lot like the 1950's?

Like woman, I am a mystery.

I mean seriously, the other day it was Alan West and his proclamation that 80 Democrats in the House were Commies. And now there's this out of Tennessee.

Quote:

MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Tennessee senators approved an update to the state's abstinence-based sex education law that includes warnings against "gateway sexual activity."

In a new family life instructions bill, holding hands and kissing could be considered gateways to sex. Planned Parenthood said that allowing state government to define local sex education curriculum could backfire.

According to a 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Study, 61 percent of Memphis City high school students and 27 percent of middle school students have had sex. That's higher than the national average.

Planned Parenthood said these numbers are why a new sex education bill promoting abstinence is not realistic.

"If the state of Tennessee gets to create the curriculum, it has to create something that umbrella reflects everyone," said Planned Parenthood Director of Education Elokin CaPese.

Tennessee House Bill 3621 and Senate Bill 3310 are currently up for debate.

In the bill, a uniformed policy on sex education is defined with terms like "gateway sexual activity." Also listed are statewide instructions on how to teach family life curriculum.

"It's not detailed enough in a health-based way," said CaPese.

The bill prohibits teachers from demonstrating gateway sexual activity. CaPese said that would include health education models.

"It makes it very clear that you can't promote contraception," said CaPese.

If an instructor goes beyond the curriculum, the bill gives parents more legal rights, stating, "The parent or legal guardian shall have a cause of action against the instructor or organization for actual damages."

"They can opt out, and that means that parents already have the power that we want them to have," said CaPese.

The bill goes before the House Education Committee next Tuesday.

What in the world is going on here in this society? It's truly bad enough that there's people that would think like this but what frightens me is that people listen to what they have to say and decide "That is a intelligent, well-reasoned individual and I would like them to have the power to make decisions on we should live our lives."

Oh, I'm sure Rappy will be along momentarily to insist that West wasn't lying, he merely "misspoke".

When did unemployment hit over 8% in the Bush years AND STAY THERE!! Did it get up to 9.7% and one point? Under Bush we had under 5% unemployment and gas was under $2 a gallion when he left office, under Barry the U.S. is a black sucking hole of dispair. Go to ANY news site and read to 1st page and ask youself do I want 4 more years of this?

You couldn't pay me to live in the 50s.

I believe personally in waiting and having sex when you get married. If people aren't willing to do that then they should at least wait until they're 18, 19, 20, aka grown and wait until they care very much for someone. So those sex in school stats apall me and tell me that this abstanance thing isn't doing its job. I liked our sex ed when I was a kid, they presented us with info and we decided what we'd do with it. Knowledge is good since if you don't tell kids stuff they'll look for that info elsewhere.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

There are comments about many recent conservative policies here in this thread.... and you claim its all about just one.

This isn't exactly new news. I recall this being circulated last election cycle. The numbers have changed slightly.

During the 50's the cars were cooler, so it wasn't all bad. National travel was majorly by train. International was by ship. Air travel was restricted to the wealthy. But there were attendant risks. After '55 the US economy was really starting to boom. The actual recovery from the Great Depression.

But medicine was more crude. A lot of people got their news from the radio or newsreels. TV was a luxury, but TV news was of a higher standard. During that period from 1950-1959 the question wasn't should we do something, it was can we do something? Action followed inevitably after ability.

And we got a lot of superfund sites from that period. And above ground atomic testing. Secret government testing on the public. Not to mention the beginning of the active period of the cold war.

I'll pass on the '50s.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I lived through the '50s, so I remember them, and the "good" stuff about it was real, but to remember it as such a great time is bullshit. Some of the things I remember:

Cold war
Girls had to wear skirts to school (and the lengths were MEASURED), and women didn't wear pants, period
McCarthyism
The suppression of women, including that it wasn't "rape" if it happened in marriage
Racial segregation
TV was black and white, and we had three stations and all went off at midnight
The only women who worked outside the home were those forced to, and they only got "women" jobs, for meager pay
Soviet invasion of Hungary
Puritanical attitudes toward sex (which the right apparently wants to re-impose now)
Schools had us hiding under desks and going through "drills" in case of nuclear war and people built bunkers
The draft
J. Edgar Hoover, and all he brought with him
Divorce was difficult, and carried much stigma; women were told to "live with it"
In California, it was actually illegal to prosecute men for spousal abuse (considered "discipline")
Child abuse by parents and teachers was also considered discipline, and children had NO rights
Highways were few, roads were bad, and there were no "federal highways"

Those who didn't live through it have a romanticized view of the '50s, just as some do of the '60s. But romanticized views of any era forget the realities.

Fair enough. After being gone for a few days, I had forgotten about this thread.

You are right, looking back, there were not direct policies named.

However, I think you know damned well what my point was, as there were several GOP actions and general positions (not policies) mentioned.

So, you, you got me on semantics - but I stand by the underlying point that you were rather comically reducing a conversation down to one single point in order to dismiss it.

There, ya feel better?

And for the record, when I harangue others for running from a thread, I make sure before hand that its still an active conversation, and that they had been posting elsewhere while it was active (and not, as in this case, someone who had been absent from the board for days). I would love to go back and in response, show all the threads where the wingnuts flee (Rappy and Geezer being laughably consistent in such tactics) but who has the time to gather so damned many links?

But bully for you and your semantic victory. You earn a gold clap.

Do you find it quite as comical when "some posters" cite a single person's comments from "the Left" and claim that such comments are indicative of the entire political left's mindset?

Seems to me your bias is showing.

No you don't. You harangued me about being "scared away" from a conversation because I didn't post in it for a total of 8 hours, yet when I point out that you've vanished from another active conversation, you demand to know what I base those claims on.

Saying you hold yourself to the same standard is laughable, to put it mildly.

Yes, it started as one thing, but then others pointed out like-minded actions which seem to, in essense, try to retrun the country to the 50's - like the thread title says.

Sorry if you find recognizing parallels to be "comedic".
