The real life affair was a true tragedy which can only be blamed on the cockiness of mankind. The movie was a significant and defining moment in my girlhood. That movie was clearly made for the 12 year old girl who would soon begin her LOI process and who was seeking depth, seeking to discover who she was and what she wanted out of the world around her. Because that's who I was at the time and it was just the thing for me.

As horrible as the dialogue and as crappy as the acting was, the rest of it had a lasting impact on my development. I haven't seen it since I was 13, it sort of got left behind in the shuffle and turmoil of that time, so I really want to go see it in the theater, netflix's copy is broken or something so I still haven't seen it, I want to go see it at the theater even though I loathe 3D, I'm willing to fork over the extra cash though to encounter the experience of connection and reflection on where I've been and where I'm going.

Doesn't fit with the tone of this thread at all, kind of a snarky thread, but I'm feeling truthsome, just finished listening to my Titanic soundtracks, I have both of them.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

I agree; good one, Mike!

The new release, from Cameron's point of view, by Cameron himself:

I loathe 3D, but I'm willing to fork over the extra money and sit through something that doesn't look any different to me for the sake of the experience of connecting to my girlhood self.

And yet, it's the 'cockiness' of mankind that has put us into space, climbed the highest peak, and dove to the
deepest parts of the ocean.

We reach too far, stumble, fall, and sometimes get bruised and battered, but we get back up again.

... because repeating stupid sh*t is what we do. We're damn proud of not learning from our mistakes, and we won't stop until we kill us all :)

I feel there's a difference between ambition and cockiness. Both were present in the Titanic admittedly, but it was cockiness that created the "this ship won't sink, so we can take short cuts, in how to build it and how to travel in it, iceburgs be hanged" energy, leading to her demise.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

I don't know. They didn't cut corners as far as I'm aware of. The ship was state of the art, in compliance with or even exceeding existing safety regulations. In hindsight, some things seem blindingly obvious, like the number of lifeboats, but there was a lot of bad luck and miscommunication with other ships involved, many small things that led to the fatal collision, and if the sea had been anything other than perfectly calm that night, even lifeboats, even a sufficient number, might not have done much to save the passengers.

It seems cocky in hindsight, but it often takes a massive failure to make our weaknesses obvious. The Titanic tragedy was a particularly poetic one, but not a poignant example of human delusions of grandeur.

The cockiness wasn't in the ship design, but in the ship's captain, who didn't want to be bothered w/ pesky icebergs, and put his own reputation before that of the passengers, the crew or the ship herself.

It was a trade magazine, as I heard it, that declared her 'unsinkable', not the White Star Company, or the builders themselves. But it was because of that accident, that we learned from our mistakes.

It's a bit like evolution. Hell yes, we'll keep striving, because that's how we, and all life, are programmed.

I thought the most pertinent ice warnings never even reached the captain? I don't think it's proven fact that he was intentionally reckless with the passengers' lives.
