Hello,

Just heard this story on ABC radio.

Problem is, it appears these Olympic outfits are the product of a private donation by Ralph Lauren.

If Congress wants to control Olympic uniforms, perhaps they should provide them.

Otherwise, as they haven't seen fit to fund the uniforms, perhaps their outrage should be directed inward.

Hello,

Indeed. In an era where many proclaim it our duty to cut spending, it is apparently immoral to take free uniforms from Ralph Lauren.

There aren't 2 dead US law enforcement agents, or 300 Mexican civilians dead in connection with these outfits, are there ?

No?

OK then.

Had this been a thread started by PN, the words 'gay' and ' jew' would have been included.

How do you know?

And since when do you care about Mexican civilians? As you said, "People die every day." And far fewer Mexicans have died from gun violence in the last decade than Americans have. Why do you hate America?

If this had been a thread started by Rappy, "the Left" would have been blamed.

I was under the impression that American Flags were all made in China back as far as the Clinton Administration.

Maybe the issue here isn't a patriotic one, but that these people are athletes. But, then again, I'm sure that the Chicago Bulls play in uniforms made outside of the US. If they're not made in china, they're made in Indonesia or something like that.

Obama sure as hell doesn't. At least, not the ones living in Mexico. Here ? He's more than willing to allow them to vote in OUR elections, take OUR jobs, and sponge off OUR social services.

As for the uniforms... meh. The hats look a bit gay, but the suits remind me of something you'd see in The Chariots of Fire, circa the 1920's.

Whew, dude!

Even though that's true, 'cuz it's the Mexican government's job to care about Mexican civilians, not ours, that's a pretty harsh thing to say-- " NO man is an island, every man's death diminishes me."

And I gotta admit, the first thought that went thru MY mind was: "Why do WE care...". Which that one word of difference was so strong that I didn't notice that your one word was not the same.

Anyway, you got bigger stones than I've got: you mentioned out loud one of those things that WE ( lefties, libs, Democrats, not necessarily you personally) are NOT SUPPOSED TO SAY.

And I feel really bad about thinking it.

You're misreading what I posted, then. I asked Rappy since when does HE care about people who aren't Americans.

And if he's so concerned about civilian deaths, and if he's so very, very concerned about the deaths of Americans doing a dangerous job in a dangerous area...

... Why won't he support a full investigation into the causes, rationale, reasons, and results of the Iraq War?

Hundreds of thousands of dead civilians, and Rappy has characterized them as nothing, mere "collateral damage", as if they were the dent left on a car after a fender-bender.

If he's concerned with the fate of Americans - those serving their country AND civilians - why has he had not a peep to say about 30,000-plus gun deaths in this country, year in and year out?

Not a word about veteran suicide rates, which have skyrocketed. Why is that?

You know why as well as I do: For Rappy, those deaths aren't politically expedient for him to bring up. They don't fit his agenda, or the agenda of his GOP masters.

Any time there are civilian deaths or military deaths that don't fit Rappy's agenda, his reaction is the same: "People die every day." That's a direct quote from him. His attitude is, who cares, big deal, not my problem, good for them.

But now I'm supposed to believe that he magically flipped some switch, and really, really cares deeply about Mexicans who, if they were on this side of the border, he'd just as soon see rounded up, tortured, or shot on sight.

Hmmm. Per the Washington Post:

Ralph Lauren Olympics uniforms prompt election-year outrage from Congress

Several lawmakers, mostly Democrats, unloaded this week on the U.S. Olympic Committee after news reports that U.S. athletes in this year’s London Games will wear outfits designed by American Ralph Lauren but manufactured mostly in China.

And who could blame them? Their response is what is to be expected when you combine election-year politics with a sluggish economy and the souring national mood toward China.

“The pride of our Olympic athletics goes hand in hand with the pride of American innovation and manufacturing,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) wrote in a letter to U.S. Olympic Committee officials. “We shouldn’t be going to the world stage with anything less. From head to toe, Team U.S.A. must be made in America.”

Late Friday, Gillibrand and her Democratic Senate colleagues from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio introduced a bill that requires the USOC to outfit Olympic athletes in ceremonial uniforms “sewn or assembled in the United States.” The bill makes no mention of what to do with the actual athletic uniforms worn during competitions. An announcement about the bill notes that the USOC is a “federally chartered non-profit entity” and that failure to comply with the law would require USOC to provide “a detailed justification” for why it chose to purchase clothing made overseas.

The flurry of letters, speeches and sound bites came in response to a report aired Wednesday night by “ABC News World News” as part of a recurring series about the U.S. manufacturing sector called “Made in America.” The report noted that the U.S. Olympic Committee “would keep $1 billion from heading overseas” if it selected American firms to make the clothing.

The committee — the only among its international counterparts that doesn’t receive taxpayer money — expressed pride this week in its partnership with the world-renowned Ralph Lauren brand but declined to address the controversy over the uniforms.

On Thursday, an ABC producer asked House and Senate leaders for reaction to the report. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed pride for the nation’s Olympians but added that “they should be wearing uniforms that are made in America.” Minutes later, at the same lectern, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said, “You’d think they’d know better.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) struck back hardest.

“I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed,” he said. “I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again.

“If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says U.S.A. on it painted by hand, that’s what they should wear. We have people in America, in the textile industry — we have people in the textile industry who are desperate for jobs.”

Hello,

I suppose if the Republicans had kept hold of their usual united front, they'd have had the headline you covet. Unfortunately for those who'd prefer otherwise, "Mostly Only Democrats in Congress are Outraged" does not lend itself to a succinct headline.

Congress was up in arms Thursday over the discovery that the U.S. team's uniforms for the opening ceremony of this year's Olympics games were manufactured in China -- snubbing the U.S. textile industry at a time when it has yet to recover from the struggling economy.

For the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who has repeatedly promised on the trail to "get tough" on China, opposing the manufacturing seemed a likely stance, except that while at the helm of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Romney outsourced the production of torchbearer uniforms to Burma.

Perhaps most embarrassing, after receiving emailed protests from more than 1,000 activists, the media relations department at the Salt Lake Organizing Committee confused Burma and Myanmar as two separate countries.

"The torch relay clothes were NOT made in Burma. They were manufactured in Myanmar," the organizing committee responded.

Perhaps Romney should retroactively retire from the 2002 Olympics?

Hmmm... Funny how complaints from "mostly Democrats" become "almost *exclusively* from Democrats" in your own personal spin machine.

If it were 51% Democrats and 49% Republicans complaining about it, that would be "mostly Democrats", but hardly "almost exclusively Democrats."

Stop pretending you're not biased. It really is pathetic that you still try to maintain such a charade.
