The first cargo ship to sail from Miami to Cuba in 50 years has arrived in Havana.

The ship was carrying humanitarian supplies such as food and medicine that are exempt from the US trade embargo against the communist-run island.

Its cargo was made up of charitable donations and gifts to relatives from Miami's large Cuban exile population.

The vessel will now operate a weekly service linking Miami and Havana for the first time since 1962.

Similar cargo services to Cuba already operate from other US ports.

The Bolivian-flagged vessel Ana Cecilia entered Havana Harbour on Friday morning.

The International Port Corporation - which is operating the service - obtained a special permit from the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which enforces the trade embargo against Cuba.

"We have to create bridges like this, it is the most important thing we can do between the two peoples," company spokesman Leonardo Sanchez-Adega told Reuters news agency.

The cargo service costs around $12 (£8) per kilo.

US President John F Kennedy imposed a trade embargo on Cuba's communist government in 1962.

In 2009 President Barack Obama relaxed the restrictions, making it easier for Cuban-Americans to visit and send money to relatives on the island.

Nice to see such a normalization of relations.

Do wonder, though, why a Socialist paradise like Cuba needs "humanitarian supplies such as food and medicine" from the evil old Capitalists. Can't be the embargo, since pretty much everyone in the world except us trades with them.

Don't worry, as soon as Castro falls dead in his soup, Trump will buy the island and turn it into a "Sandals".

Hello,

Relations are far from normalized, but this is a good step in the right direction. It should become less expensive for people in the US to send care packages to relations in Cuba with this cargo run in place. Sending care packages in the past has been an expensive prospect, so any reduction in costs is great.

From the way Michael Moore and other celebs speak, Cuba should be sending us medical supplies.

So quote me where I (or Auraptor) said we have a problem with folks sending stuff to their families in Cuba. I even said it was nice to see.

I'm just surprised that the Socialists here who have praised Cuba's government so highly (SignyM, for example) don't explain why such aid isn't really necessary.

Are there people in the United States who need help medical help who aren't getting it?

If so, is that proof that our capitalist paradise is a miserable failure?

Hello,

If I remember correctly, medical supplies is actually one of the major industries of Cuba. This does not, however, mean that the natives get all they need when they need it.

In fact, the main industry of Cuba may be 'getting by with less than we ever thought possible.'

Such industry may be an example that the rest of us will someday need to emulate, whatever our system of government.

Hello,

For those that are interested, I made an inquiry with one of my family members about what they send to Cuba and why. This is the response in her own words, copy and pasted from their email reply.

They never request food, so I don't think it's a problem for them. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's not for other parts of the island. Mainly, it's items that are hard to get; such as shoes, watches, razor blades and clothes. Along with that, I occasionally send them monetary help, especially since the man of the house lost his job. The health situation in Cuba is critical, though, as there has recently been an outbreak of cholera. I imagine that the authorities here are monitoring it very closely, as so many in our community travel there.

And once again Geezer misrepresents reality. The truth is that sanctions apply not just to US-owned businesses no matter where they are on the globe, but to foreign-based businesses that have branches in the US:

http://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/programs/pages/cuba.
aspx

"To whom do these sanctions regulations apply?

All U.S. citizens and permanent residents wherever they are located, ALL PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS PHYSICALLY IN THE UNITED STATES, and all branches and subsidiaries of U.S. organizations throughout the world."

In other words, any company, group or organization located anywhere in the world must forgo trade with Cuba if they wish to have a location in the US. No matter how large and international like an oil-rig manufacturer, or how small and insignificant, like a small British tobacco store.

"The US has said it will prosecute any businesses that have any dealings with Cuba and also have a branch in the US."

"Bank ditches UK firms trading with Cuba

Duncan Campbell
The Guardian, Sunday 15 June 2008

A Somerset health shop selling Cuban sugar and a London tobacconist dealing in Habanos cigars are among British businesses told by a bank to cut their ties with the island or move their accounts.

Lloyds TSB has written to customers who have dealings with Cuba saying they will have to take their accounts elsewhere, apparently in the wake of threats by the US government, which operates an embargo against Cuba.

The US has said it will prosecute any businesses that have any dealings with Cuba and also have a branch in the US."

Apparently Lloyds TSB is feeling heat from the US Treasury, which males me wonder if these are pass-through sanctions that will pass through the small shops to Lloyds.

"Cuba is free to trade with other nations, but the U.S. threatens sanctions against foreign companies that don't abide by its restrictions."

"Cuba is free to trade with other nations, but the U.S. threatens sanctions against foreign companies that don't abide by its restrictions. A stark example arrived off the coast of Havana last month: A massive oil exploration rig built with less than 10 percent U.S. parts to qualify under the embargo was brought all the way from Singapore at great expense, while comparable platforms sat idle in U.S. waters just across the Gulf of Mexico."

SignyM: I swear, if we really knew what was being decided about us in our absence, and how hosed the government is prepared to let us be, we would string them up.

I believe it's generally called "austerity measures", and the conservatives tend to fully embrace it.

Sounds like they're aspiring to be socialists!

Anthony,

Thank you for this information. If possible, could you let us know if you come across any reputable charity groups that are helping out the Cuban people? I don't have much - less than most Americans, maybe - but I try to help when and where I can.

There are people there who need help. They are Cuban, they may be socialist, but they are, first and foremost, human beings.

Hello,

I laud your generosity, Mike. If I hear of an organization, I'll let you know. All of the charity I've heard of in my life has been person to person, but it makes sense there should be some kind of group operating as well.

Actually, it might *NOT* make sense, Anthony - any group operating in such a fashion might find itself prone to persecution - er, I mean *prosecution* - for its actions.
