It's all unraveling. Greed is wiping us out as a world power. Another war on the horizon as soon as Romney is elected. More war profits for some, more debt for the rest of us. Loss of faith in our leaders... hatred of the scapegoats...
NASA lands a new rover on Mars, but do we care as a nation or world?
Not really. No one to kill there, no threat to us.
Taliban is yesterday. Iran is tomorrow.
Send in the drones.
Old white rich folk will be dead before the must witness the fruits of their deception- they're disconnected from their kids that will, anyway.
Pigs have no rights; I want my bacon.
The human masses have no rights; I want my bottom line.
God has left the building.
Take sides, everyone, for sides are all there is, and the majority of us will be on the losing one in any case, left, right or center.

How many children died today from hunger?
Eh, forget it- let's focus on people that make us angry!!

I know Curiosity's landing was in the small hours (EST ) of the night, and there's the Olympics going on, as well as Syria ... but until and unless we find something organic fossilized - ANYTHING , ain't no one gonna care 1 bit.

Of course, because it's not sensational (to anyone but space geeks like you & me)- best we keep tight attention on enemies, both abroad and domestic. Enemies define us, stupid planets in our solar system do not.

Chin up, you're still up there as the wealthiest nation on earth and polling high in most other ways. Maybe being 'good enough' is a new experience, rather than 'greatest', but welcome to my world.

If you think things are tough in US, spare a thought for those people unlucky enough to be born in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Quote:

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Norway has been declared the world's happiest country. Just as unsurprising, the Democratic Republic of Congo came last.

The United Nations Human Development Index 2011 measures happiness in different countries based on factors such as income, education, health, life expectancy, economy, gender equality and sustainability.

"To be more accurate, one would say this measures the quality of life. It goes beyond income to include basic measures like education and health," says Surekha Subarwal, U.N. communications representative from New Delhi.

More on CNNGo: Best cities to travel in 2012

Essentially the index implies that if you live longer, earn more money and have access to good schools and healthcare, you're probably going to be happier than people who don't.

“This is more than just the traditional index which just measure average income, health and education,” says Adam Rogers, the U.N.'s communications officer in Geneva. "This measurement of human wellbeing and happiness introduces the inequality dimension, a measure of access to health and education.”

Bhutan, the only country that gauges its progress by measuring its people's happiness rather than economic contributions, came a rather lowly 141.

Rogers clarifies, “This study is much more empirical than the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index you will find in Bhutan, which is quite subjective.”

Just missing out on a top 10 spot was Switzerland in 11th place. The United States came fourth while the United Kingdom came 28th, below Hong Kong (13th), Korea (15th), France (20th), Singapore (26th) and the Czech Republic (27th).

Sometimes technology finds a way.

I mean, I had a childhood dream of owning an arcade once, only to have it blown up by the expense, logistics, bribes and hassles involved, and then it came full circle via the MAME32X Emulator and a butt-ton of original arcade ROM data.
Not to mention how far console machines have advanced.

Oh the infamous "You'll never walk again" discussion after the near fatal accident, or any NUMBER of "impossible" things, from surviving in the first place, to mechanization, beating an illness which SHOULD have been fatal, crushing WWASPS...

I do not believe in the 'impossible' - I believe in the power of the human will and spirit.
It's all in how WE apply it - what others do, matters not so much as what WE do.

Exactly like in the movie CONTACT. I have no doubt that life would indeed imitate art, were anything like that to be found on Mars.

It's all about money. This crazy 'concept' of love is a joke. We fuck to procreate, then move along. Or grow old hating our partner.
We kill animals to eat & for fun, we are animals in daily life, the idea of 'God' is laughable...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"nothing is ever ENOUGH"

I had a wonderful dream about the earth where people understood the destructiveness of greed and the freedom you get when everyone takes just enough, but no more. It was clean, it was abundant, it was peaceful, and everyone was free.

Now maybe it's not a common idea, but if one person can think it, then it's within human scope.

I see absolutely no reason why religion and life on other planets are mutually exclusive. Nor do I see religion and evolution, for that matter. In fact, I think that the three concepts together help prove each other.

I know that my opinion is in the vast minority though.

REDREAD

The poster formerly known as yinyang.

Bytemite's been over in General Discussions talking about River. Seems like she's doing just fine:

www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=2&tid=52730

Don't know why she hasn't wandered into RWED. Also don't know why most people in RWED don't wander over into other parts of the site. Sometimes it seems like people in RWED don't realize there even are other parts of the site.

As for Anthony, the last time he posted was the 6th, here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=52605&mid=9
06771#906771

Seems like he was really put off by the way the discussion turned. I wouldn't be surprised if he was just taking a break from here for a while.

Thanx, that's good to hear. I think we know why she hasn't been over here; the last thread whe posted in was pretty weird and she might be embarrassed...but then what do I know. Good to hear she's okay; that's all that matters.

Speaking just for myself, I almost never go to other forums, mostly because everything I've ever read about Firefly has pretty much covered the same ground, and it's not coming back. I'm not into discussions of comics and fanfic on what followed after Serenity, just not what interest me. Plus the fact that I spend so much time HERE that if I went to other forums, too, I'd never get off the computer! I'm into politics and other real world events, so this is where my interests lie. I've thought of going to other forums occasionally, and have gone to Talk Story a couple of times, but immediately recognized that if I went elsewhere, I'd get involved THERE, too, so it'd be even harder to tear myself away from the site!

Thanx for the info on Anthony. I miss him, but what you said makes perfect sense; he's probably pissed at us. He has his resons and I respect them; personally I wish he hadn't even started that thread. Discussions on guns never go anywhere and usually stir up bad feelings. I hope he comes back before long, I really respect Anthony and don't want some contentious discussion of guns to lose him for us.

Thanx for both updates, they mean a lot to me.
