Hello,

So far, I think decoupling the middle class tax issue from the upper class tax issue is a wise move. It takes away a degree of leverage, or as he says a 'hostage' situation.

So far, it's nice to hear the President reassure the American people that he has little or no knowledge of the inner workings of his administration, that he has no specific plan to cut spending other then raising taxes on the rich, and that he knows that his own budget is completely useless for any purpose other then toilet paper.

Oh, and he likes that Romney saved the Olympics but currently has no plans to actually meet Romney although he would like to make plans sometime around the Holidays (which is very thoughtful).

Hearing him in the background, Anthony--I rarely listen to speeches, press conferences, debates, etc. He's sure gone on long enough~ I'll check with the pundits on various stations once he shuts up to see what they say he said. ;o) I know the tax cut thing is a biggie--I've heard talk about him going around the nation to "sell" it, etc. Would be peachy if they would JUST extend them for those under $250 and then have their little "war" about the rest, but I'm pretty sure the righties won't agree to it. It would mean giving up the hostage (he's right about that) and not look good if they were to be the proponents of keeping the tax cut for the rich. Appearance is all!

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Hello,

I speculate that this is because the Republicans will wipe their ass with it. Which does not mean he has no budget/plan.

Hello,

I think that failing to separate the issues and failing to give immediate tax certainty to the middle class would be an unpopular move on the part of the GOP. Most especially before Christmas.

Yup. And yup. Sadly. Will this country EVER return to sanity? Some days, I find I doubt it.

DALEK!

The GOP is just going to have to come to terms with the fact that they lost the election and that taxes are going up for the wealthy. If there is no agreement they are going up for everyone. So Republicans in the House have a choice, fail to keep their pledge for a small % of the population or fail to do so for the majority of the population.

Hello,

Are you speaking of his original 1 trillion dollar plan or the new 4 trillion dollar plan?

Elections have consequences. So lets compare. The President won by about 3%. Republicans retained a large majority in the House and most won their elections by MORE then 3%. The President ran a broad based campaign of many issues while local Republicans campaigned mostly on the issue of Obamacare, the budget, and opposition to tax increases. In fact that 3% margin of the President represents the racist vote (those who would not vote for the white man) and not a particular stance on any issue.

Therefore the mandate for House Republicans is to oppose tax increases for the wealthy. The President is just going to have to come to terms with the fact that Democrats lost hundreds of elections last Tuesday at the State and local level.

Hello,

I'm not sure that the mandate of the Republicans is specifically to 'oppose tax increases for the wealthy.' I think the particular boogeyman raised was 'Your Taxes will Increase.'

If the GOP can secure the tax levels of 90%+ of their constituency immediately, they would seem to have an obligation to do that.

I doubt very much that their constituents wanted to tie their tax fates to the fate of the upper echelon earners if such a situation could be avoided. If we continue to view this as a hostage negotiation, the negotiator would have a duty to release as many hostages as possible. On the issue of middle class taxes, this is not a situation where it's a good idea to 'hang together.'

Actually this is not comparable to the hostage negotiator...because the same people are being held hostage by BOTH sides. Its more like two people with a gun to the head of a third person and both shouting if the other does not do what they want then the third person gets it...

Will the President raise taxes on 90% of the American people in order to secure tax increases on the top 10%? Gee...that does not seem fair. If the American people wanted that result then they would have elected more Democrats. I guess he wants to punish the poor and middle class because its the ONLY way he can punish those he's really after.

The argument works both ways so its like an offsetting penalty in football, they need to replay third down. How about a compromise? The President gives the Republicans the most of the spending cuts they want, the Republicans close loopholes and tax breaks to raise revenue from the top 10% leaving overall rates unchanged for everyone? The Hero Plan...

I think the Republicans have misplayed this. I'd have gone into special session starting last Wednesday morning and invited the President to meet with them...every day. Set up a big giant table in one of their big giant committee rooms (with cameras). Yep, day after day show up ready to negotiate leaving an empty chair for the President. Maybe have some danishes and coffee set up ready to go. I'd make it a big table with lots of binders on their side filled with spending cuts and tax reform and leaving the President's half empty...cause so far, he's brought nothing to the table. Then every night make the invitation again or "we'll come see you anytime, anyplace, just lets get this done".

Yes, he will. He has said that he will veto anything that extends the tax cuts for the wealthy. He has little to lose, 4 more years and he is done. Despite your foggy election math, the Democrats won the White House, gained seats in the Senate and the House. The only reason the GOP still has the house is all those wonderful gerrymandered districts.

I say lock it all up again like Clinton did. We all know who came out on top that time. More so now when a vast majority of the country support that idea of increasing taxes on the wealthy.

The Republicans misplayed that one too. I'd have passed the spending bills we wanted, thanked everyone, turned out the lights and gone home and not said one word to anyone till the President either signed the bills or called a special session.

Yes, because the GOP going home while the government was shut down would have looked really good.

Do you really not understand how the budget process works?

Hello,

The answer to that seems to be 'no.'

In today's news conference, the president offered to set up that 90% with no tax increases. Immediately. To set their minds at ease before the holidays.

Or did I misunderstand?
