Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

They said we'd have three storms this weekend, and that Sunday's would be the heaviest. Well the last two were quite heavy enough, thank you, so I held off believing them. But they were right...in SPADES! This puppy started in the middle of the night and seems to have just gotten STRONGER! I know, 'cuz I don't sleep soundly, I roll over every couple of hours and when I do, am aware of how much it's raining--or whether what sounds like rain on the tarp is actually "drippage" off the trees.

The last two have left the Outback awash, which isn't that surprising for a couple of good, hefty storms. But this one has me checking periodically to ensure it's still holding its own...the downpour has been pretty unceasing, and it's now 7:30 a.m.! People are gonna hurt from this one, and thank gawd it's Sunday--I can't even conceive of what it would have done to the commute!

The ground has been soaked since the first one, since we had a couple of regular storms already. This is early for this kind of shit--usually it hits around New Years, so I dunno what it means for the coming months. The rivers are flooding, and apparently up in the Sierras (being they've been Pineapple Expresses--i.e., warm and very wet) they were already dealing with flooding. Eep. There WILL be slides...

Listen, I love me my Pineapple Expresses as much as the next guy--well, no, MORE, unquestionably. But there's a limit...the gutters out front are like raging waters, the back yard is a marsh, and it just seems to go on and on and on. This is getting a bit much even for someone who loves rain as much as I do...I hope everyone else on the Coast is hanging tight and somewhere safe!

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Saw the flood forecasts yesterday, and I was worried about you. The news I saw predicted flooding of the Russian and Napa Rivers, not so much Marin County. I remember the Russian River flood of 1965 or '67-- I was in it, in Mendocino County, several bridges near us washed out, the roads affected were closed for months, some of 'em. No loss of life then, but some property damage and LOTS of inconvenience.

Hold tight, stay in, cuddle up by a good fire with a nice warm husband and several big dogs, you'll be fine. You might even mostly enjoy it. And we'll worry about you 'til it's over.

It lightened up shortly after I typed that, and finally ended yesterday! For now, anyway, but there's nothing bad forecast ahead for a while. Whew!

I haven't caught up on the news; I hope there wasn't too much damage. The Napa ALWAYS floods, NewOld, if you look at it wrong! That's pretty much a yearly occurrence except in drought years. We got lucky this year, it JUST stayed within its banks.

The Russian floods a lot at times like these too, and again we got lucky. They were expecting it to flood today at 35 feet, but it, too, JUST stayed within it's banks and was predicted to crest at only 27. That last storm moved through a lot faster than expected (thank goodness--that was a NASTY one!)--usually Pineapple Express storms hang over us, dumping and dumping. Whew!

Our worry is always San Anselmo, just a mile away, which has had really horrible flooding from the one little creek that runs through it. They sandbagged like crazy, but I think made it through okay, too. We're halfway up a hill, so the worst that can happen is we get cut off--well, the worst that HAS happened is one massive mudslide, took out a couple of houses and a neighbor died above us. Watched our car float down in the mud and it ended up smashing George's car next door and landing on their lawn. Scary times--s'okay, we don't like George ;o) and our car was old.

The sad part (aside from any damage) is that, as it was a Pineapple Express, three warm, heavy storms in a row, and the Sierras didn't get snow, just RAIN! Some of those places were supposed to open for skiing next weekend...ooops! That's a major bummer for them, and Jim's son lives in Jacksonville, where tourism is a big source of revenue.

So I'm off to sulky the dogs...managed to get them out in a break Saturday, came home of course covered in mud. They saw the coyote out at the Ponds, and dragged me pell-mell through about every puddle on the way! It's colder today, post-storm, so they should enjoy it, and hopefully the coyote isn't there. Usually I LOVE seeing him, but there's too many puddles out there right now... ;o)

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

If we don't get snow, our water gets rationed and then the fires come and purge the land of all vegetation, animal, and human life. The arrival of the fires is foreordained by the darwin awards that think that going out into the back country and shooting hot metal pellets into dry tinder brush is a good idea.

The refugee camps look like Somalia, and children choke on the suffocating hot wind.

There is no snow. Yesterday it was 60 degrees outside.

Yeah, Byte, Utah seems to be getting it worse and worse...for a state that was pretty dry to begin with!

Frem, that's the same thing they're screaming up in the Sierras...in our case, it affects the entire state practically, 'cuz that's where a lot of our water comes from. Hopefully, since it's really early in the season--we usually don't see rain like this until after the first of the yeaer--we'll get more, later storms to bring us snow. But rain rather than snow is very unusual...like so many things happening all over (like your 50-degrees in Michigan and Byte's 60-degrees in Utah...in the dead of Winter! For us, temps are pretty normal, 50-60 degrees, but not for you guys!

Dogs had a blast at the Ponds...hadn't gotten past 47 yet, and that always gets 'em going like bats out of hell! Huskies BELONG in cold weather...

Its pretty damned warm and dry here in New Mexico, too.

I shot a scene this weekend. It was supposed to be set in the dead of winter. When I scheduled the shoot, months ago - I was certain we'd have snow on the ground, as we always start getting snow late October-mid November.

This year - nothing. It was a nice, balmy 60-something all day. Didn't even need a jacket.

Rather depressing.

Yup, Mark, I know what you mean. Here, we're used to warm spells at any time of year, but I can just imagine how weird it is for you guys to be having "California weather" at this time of year.

But of course, there's no climate change...or global warming...or anything like that. It's all just natural. You betcha.

(Okay, you've dropped a hint now, you've got me. What are you, cameraman, director, what? You've piqued my curiosity ...)

Im actually just a High School teacher.

But I make short films on the side. Yesterday, I finally finished shooting a 4-part (or maybe 6-part, depending on release format) mini-series spun off from the old Highlander TV/Movie series. They were being made for the Blu Ray release of the series, but that's been put on hold, so Im not sure how they're going to be made availkable, yet.

I have an old thread about it (with a trailer for the first couple episodes) here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=49085

Ooo, neat! I'm envious. My apologies, I forgot you were a teacher, I knew that (didn't know it was high school tho'). Damn, they didn't have teachers who looked like that when I was in school...betcha there are more than a few who have crushes on the teach, eh?

So then, as a teacher (especially high school!), what is your impression of what we CAN do in this country to improve our educational system? I gotta ask...smoke comes out my ears when I see what's happening currently, and how bad the system has become, compared to what it was when I was in high school.

That's so cool Story.

Its pretty wet here, but we're used to that for this time of year, we aren't flooding currently so everything's okay on my end.

Got around to watching the trailer, Mark...I think it's GREAT! I agree with the two criticisms noted, but I can honestly say I was caught up in it enough that it didn't bother me. I assume we can't see the entirety of them unless we buy the discs, and given I've never watched Highlander, I won't be doing so. Bummer.

So are you director, cameraman, or what? Amazing how much talent is just walking around out there among us and we never know.
