Hello,

I always wonder what behind the scenes machinations, revelations, and dealmaking results in these kinds of surprising announcements.

As Andrea stated, about the one thing she did get right, was that the inevitable battle over her nomination would have been untenable.

Not so hard to figure that one out.

Good. She's a greedy evil 1% rich person worth $40 million. Probably stepped on a lot of poor white people to get there. She'll now likely get appointed to NSA top spot because she's so good at interpreting intelligence data.

Jong, were those remarks tongue in cheek, or serious? I'd like to know.

As to the attacks on Rice, it's pretty obvious:
Quote:

I wonder if John McCain feels even the slightest twinge of shame over his McCarthyesque campaign to torpedo Susan Rice. Probably not. The McCain who might once have been capable of such decency hasn’t been seen in Washington in many a moon.

McCain and his merry little band haven’t been able to lay a glove on Barack Obama, the man who denied McCain the presidency four years ago, and their increasing irrelevance has made them frustrated. But Rice? Rice was somebody they could handle.

That’s because, as U.S. senators, they had something that Rice wanted. She needed their permission to become the next secretary of state, should Obama decide to nominate her to that post, and that made her vulnerable. Through deception and ginned-up righteousness, McCain and his pals at Fox proceeded to turn Rice into the face of a Benghazi tragedy in which she had played only the most peripheral of roles. Like a husband who is angry at his wife but kicks the dog instead, they smeared her as a proxy for Obama.

Yesterday, with Rice’s withdrawal from consideration, they got the scalp they wanted. They “counted coup” on Obama, even if indirectly, and I guess they proved to themselves that they still mattered. But to a lot of other people, they proved something less flattering about themselves. http://blogs.ajc.com/jay-bookman-blog/2012/12/14/mccains-ugly-campaign- against-susan-rice-pays-off/

I think it's more than that, too. McCain has turned into an irrelevant, grumpy old man due none of the respect I used to have for him. He's never gotten over his bitterness at losing in 2008, and Rice served as a senior foreign policy adviser to Obama in that campaign, as well as having accused McCain during the 2008 campaign of being "reckless" and unsuitable for the White House over his hawkish foreign policy stances. McCain can certainly hold a grudge, so I believe it's not just political "counting coup", I think it's also personal.

The entire witch hunt was stupid, given what Rice did would be considered totally unimportant if done by anyone else on the Sunday talk shows--Sunday talk shows, for heaven's sake! If anyone should be on the hot seat, it should be Clinton, not Rice, given Clinton and others were the ones responsible for mistakes in Benghazi, Rice only said what the secret service ALLOWED her to say publicly.

But as Dan Rather said last night:
Quote:

"What has happened today plays into the perception, the perception that has been growing among the Republicans that, in street language, President Obama can be rolled for his wallet and his watch. He's not a guy that's going to put up much of a fight," Rather said. More at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/12/13/dan_rather_on_obama_ and_susan_rice_he_made_a_lot_of_tough_talk_didnt_back_it_up.html

They certainly rolled him like crazy in his first term; I was hoping he'd learned from that and was going to stop being a woos. I fear this might be the first indication he's not, that this wasn't just a case of counting coup politically or machinations to open up Kerry's seat or a personal vendetta on McCain's part; I fear it might also be a "testing of the waters" to see if Obama's grown balls. Unfortunately, from this situation it appears he hasn't. Which doesn't bode well for the country.

I don't know why John Kerry is the leading contender. Seems like there are people better qualified than the Mass. billionaire.

Reports are saying it will be an easy confirmation in the Senate for John Kerry. I can't help but wonder how the ex-POW John McCain feels about the ex-Winter Soldier Kerry. They both failed in their bids for President. Strange bedfellows.

McCain will prolly gladly rubber stamp his confirmation, just to get him the hell out of the Senate. Good ol boy network, party doesn't matter all that much there. He's as good as in.

John Kerry is very, very qualified for the post. He's the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs committee and has dealt with foreign leaders, he's a war vet with Silver Star, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts (and let's not go into the asinine Swift Boat stuff--read Wikipedia on it if you want to play that game, it has all the details), has a deep knowledge of foreign policy, nearly 30 years in the Senate, he's been under the stress of running for President--which also puts him in a position of respect with other leaders. That he was anti-war after his military experience would also earn him respect with some other foreign leaders who are sick of us sticking our noses in everywhere.

Please point out individuals who are more qualified, and why, if you think Kerry isn't qualified enough. McCain, by the way, along with John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and other Republicans, have all suggested Kerry would be a good pick.

As to why the right wants him as Sec. of State, and part of why they went after Rice so absurdly, it's obvious by now just from what they've said themselves that they want his vacated seat open for Scott Brown. It's all part of the game. I didn't think of that angle at first, but now it's all over the place, so I was just late coming to the game--plus I don't know all the ins and outs of politics, any more than most of us do here.

Yeah, the stress of running for President, where he insults US troops, while talking to a crowd comprised mostly of college students.
