Mass Murders Are On The Rise

There are many types of murder including single death, serial and mass. Single death homicides are, as the name implies, a one time event. Serial murder is one victim at a time repeated over and over, with a separation between the murders, described as separate occasions with a cooling-off period in between.

The FBI defines mass murder as “Four or more murders occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involve a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident." The Colorado shooting by James Holmes was a classic mass murder.

According to the 2010 FBI crime data, since 1980, single victim killings have dropped by more than 40 percent. While that's very good news, there's a new sobering trend: Mass murders are on the rise. This New York Times article researched the frequency of mass murders. It found during the 20th century there were about one to two mass murders per decade until 1980. Then for no apparent reason they spiked, with nine during the 1980s and 11 in the 1990s. Since the year 2000 there have been at least 26, including the massacre in Aurora, Colorado.

Penguin, those states are for global mass murders, from what the article said. And I'm not sure how they came to those numbers, but if we look at them one by one just since the turn of the century in OUR country alone, I for one certainly see the numbers increasing:

I'm not sure how Fox looks at it, but it seems to me that, while there are a few years with only one, it has gone up since 1999...and this year alone we've had seven, which is the highest number.

I think it's all in how you look at it...the idea that there were the most mass murders in 1929 doesn't fit, for me; that was prohibition and a lot of murders took place, mass and otherwise, and doesn't speak to whether a single individual just opened up on a group of people for no apparent reason or for some personal reason. I imagine most of those were gangster deaths, which puts into question for me how he arrived at his figures. He doesn't say anything, from what I read of the article, about a single gunman or two gunmen just opening up on strangers. JMHO.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

I'd love to see stats for each of these mass killings, as to what type of weapons were used. For instance, was a knife used in any of these incidents? I'm told that knives are just as dangerous and deadly as guns.

Were flintlocks and muzzle-loaders used? Revolvers or bolt-action rifles?

I look forward to hearing about it the next time someone gets into a school and strangles 27 people with his bare hands. I'm sure the news will be all over it.

A gun is just a tool, I'm told, just like a knife or a hammer. I've been assured that a knife can also be used to kill people. A knife can, of course, also be used to cut food to feed it to another person, or to, in some cases, operate on someone and save their life. I've yet to see a gun used in such ways.

Exactly. They were injured, not killed. I can't be sure, but I've heard that if you had to choose, stabbed and alive tends to gain a bit of favor over shot and killed as a life status.
