This has been a pet peeve of mine since grade school.

The notion of snow days is of course primarily rooted in safety, but apparently safety falls before the rush to boost the almighty test scores and heaven forfend we let the little mungers off the hook for a little while, oh how terrible the inconvenience of having to rearrange OUR precious schedules for the mere safety of kids....
And so they try harder and harder, and find more excuses to damn the torpedos and send them buses out there anyways, and THIS happens.

Police: 21 students were on Saline bus involved in accident Tuesday morning

Students were on two school buses hit by cars in separate incidents Tuesday in Washtenaw County, including five that had to be taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Thanks be it wasn't worse - a long time ago in Baltimore several students were killed because of this, the day AFTER a scathing verbal showdown about it between me, my mother and the school board, who was pissed at me refusing to get on the damn bus cause I felt it was both unfair and unsafe.

I've always felt very strongly about this, and intend to chew some ass around here locally in regards to it - So WHAT if schedules have to be rearranged, So WHAT if it costs a little extra, So WHAT about the goddamned test scores - PRIORITIES, people, damn....

Let them enjoy themselves, cut loose a little, be the children we almost never ALLOW them to be any more, you know ?

Here in Portland if we even have one inch/a dusting everyone freaks out and school shuts down. This incident would never happen here. Side note, its been three years now since it snowed enough to sled at the golf course (2 or 3 inches). Last time was 2010. My mother claims that it snowed enough in 2011 and they got stuck and so forth, but I wasn't present and so I don't believe this story, where would I have been in winter that would be far enough away so that it didn't snow that much where I was? My grandma's house in an hour south, I guess I could have been there and Portland could have gotten a localized freak storm, but I find this unlikely.

Perhaps the most hyped-up and hysterical behavior occurs here in South Florida when there's a hurricane on the way. We go through this absurd circus about 20-30 times a year, every year. The local tv stations go ballistic with almost non-stop reporting of the location and projected path of the storm. Schools are closed even when the hurricane is still far out in the Atlantic. Supermarkets get packed, and the shelves get emptied. Gas lines start to get long, and atm machines are very busy. Batteries and bottled water disappear. Then as the hurricane misses us as it does 99% of the time, the media issues a non-apology apology for once again scaring everybody. They're just looking out for all of us, and if businesses lose tens of millions of dollars in the process, too bad. I've lived here for 35 years. That's almost 1,000 hurricanes we've been warned about. Out of that 1,000, only 3 have ever caused any significant damage to the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area.

Riona: My grandmother lives five minutes away by car, sometimes she gets 2 inches of snow when we get six to eight. Storms doesn't necessarily dump evenly over all the area they cover, and sometimes wind direction, topography, and trees can play into it as well.

Jong, my best friend and her husband just moved to Miami from Ponta Vedra (Jacksonville), they'll be moving into a house on Cay Largo soon, they're lovin it. I hope to come visit them in the spring or summer, as long as I'm assured that he'll be at work all the days I'm there, so I can have alone time with her each day. If they can't meet this need then I'm not forking over the cash to fly all that way. Can you tell I don't like my best friend's husband? But even if I did like him I'd still have similar needs, because I've known her and loved her longer than he has, and a few days isn't too much to ask IMO, Having him around part of the time is ... fine though.

Keep the Shiny side up

Should be interesting around here tomorrow (01.24.13) since we've been below freezing for a few days and are expecting and inch or two of snow, that'll all stick. The D.C. area is fun because we have a pretty constant turnover of folks from either the Southern U.S. or foreign countries where it never snows, and they think that having 4WD or AWD will let them stop faster than a normal car in the snow. It don't. Madame Geezer and I'll stay home by the fire and make s'mores. A friend just brought us some bittersweet German chocolate from her trip to Hamburg over Christmas, and it's perfect with toasted marshmallows and grahams.

It's very hot and the humidity is brutal in the Summer. Key Largo is a great little town with lots of fishing and all kinds of water activities. Also has many waterfront bars and restaurants. I used to go to The Italian Fisherman and another place called Hobo's. If you have time, take a short ride down to Islamorada and go to Holiday Isle. You won't want to leave.

Apparently the epic ass chewing I faxed them in regards to this had some impact, and mine probably wasn't the only one.

I even dug out my old Underwood Five and hammered it out on that in a haze of cigarette smoke and bad coffee, it was almost nostalgic it was.
