US Secretary of State John Kerry has pledged $450m (£300m) to support Egypt's faltering economy but warned Cairo that "more hard work" is needed.

Mr Kerry's comments came after talks with President Mohammed Morsi.

He urged Mr Morsi to ensure April polls were free, fair and transparent.

...

The Egyptian people must come together to address their economic challenge," Mr Kerry stressed.

He also said that Washington would now be providing the first $190m of the pledged $450m in budget support funds for Egypt.

Mr Kerry earlier urged the Egyptian government the government to reach a deal on $4.8bn IMF loan that could unlock more US funds.

Mr Morsi's government agreed the loan in principle last November but it was later put on hold amid the continuing street protests.

John Kerry's first overseas trip as secretary of state is taking him to 11 countries in Europe and the Middle East.

So we have to furlough TSA agents, air-traffic controllers, and park rangers; lay off teachers; delay medical care to seniors; reduce or stop Head Start programs; and fire government contractors because we don't have enough money to run the government, but we can give almost half a billion to Egypt?

This is not to mention the 'additional' $60 million we pledged to aid the Syrian rebels. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21612130

It's important to Obama and Kerry that the Muslim Brotherhood is well funded and well armed. $450 million plus a big shipment of F-16 fighter jets and tanks just makes so much sense to give to a country run by a terrorist organization. And of course the Republicans in the House won't say anything or lift a finger to stop any of it. La di da, la di da ... Annie Hall.

I agree with Geezer, if we can't take care of our own economy then why are we spending lots of money trying to take care of someone else's? In the US of Riona we don't do that, occasionally we'll interfere, positively or negatively, with other countries but we try to limit that so we can focus on us, we're kind of selfish that way.

Not that $450 million is large in the scheme of things, but I don't like that we are sending it to Egypt. I would much rather utilize $450 million elsewhere if we are going to spend it on foreign nations. Perhaps somewhere closer to home, south of us, where the money could be used to combat the flow of drugs or used to promote democracy in our backyard.
