I challenge all Tea Party and Republican people to tackle the President's SOTU Address. It was the best of his presidency ever.

If this were a boxing match, the ref would have called it well into the 9th round, bloodied and battered, and near the end of a "standing" 8 count.
At every turn he pummeled his opponents with jabs, crosses and uppercuts.
Rocky's cornerman couldn't save them, and POTUS was as fresh as a daisy.

The republican response was weak and non-specific, just more of the same rhetoric and false national bravado. They should have just well enough alone.
Now let's see if the conservatives have the balls to answer the president's challenge.

America loves a winner!

And in real America, folks are struggling to get by, dealing w/ a cold winter, and don't have time for such kabuki theatre antics of a tired , failed community activist who has promised much and delivered little, save for blaming others and stirring up animosity between Americans.

Parallax View is good, but Executive Action is the best movie on that subject. Burt Lancaster and Robert Ryan are ex-intelligence agents, who along with some wealthy businessmen all acting as "patriots" for the good of the country, plan the operation ....

Lancaster: "Dallas has one of the highest murder rates in the country. In the last two years, the Secret Service has established 149 threats against Kennedy's life from Texas alone, yet they send him into hostile territory with no more protection than you and I would arrange for a favorite dog."

Ryan: "Without knowing it he's (JFK) created the perfect scenario for his own elimination. Sometimes they do that you know."

Sniper Team Leader: "Yeah, I got his (Oswald's) rifle. It's a 6.5 millimeter Italian Carcano. It shoots high and to the left, and the bolt sticks. Christ, the Italians quit makin' these 25 years ago! They called it "The rifle that never hurt anyone... on purpose!"

Upon further review, it was rehashed and somewhat refurbished. Still though better than anything the republicans - all four of them - had to offer.

SHINY- Better than any GOP SOTU is setting the bar really, really low.

There are two.... no, three... no, four... more.... things about Obama's speech that I really disliked

1) It was long. Really, really long. Is he getting paid by the word?

2) Obama, promising to "review" or "reform" NSA spying and drone attacks.

Say, what??

Isn't he the President who sits down with John Brennan (CIA Chief and supporter of torture under GWB) every Tuesday to develop a drone "kill list"?? http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/05/23/obama-i-make-the-dron
e-decisions.html
Isn't Obama the one who vastly expanded the NSA electronic eavesdropping program begun by GWB?

3) Obama was like a TV showman with a bag full of glitter and cheap hard candy: tossing it out for the kids, something for everyone, but all small ball. VERY small ball.

4) And everything that he promised that is good for average people, he'll bail on. In previous SOTUs and other speeches, I very distinctly remember Obama saying he'd support the health insurance public option. I very distinctly remember Obama promising to be the most transparent administration ever... this, from the President who has prosecuted more whistleblowers than all other Presidents combined.

5) What he jawbones on the one hand- increasing the minimum wage.... he takes away with the other, by pushing for the Trans Pacific Partnership- a trade agreement that not only pits us against $0.30/ hour Vietnamese workers but does away with any environmental, food safety, or worker's rights laws that may conflict with the "expected profits" of the transnationals.

Obama isn't a great orator, he's a decent one. But not SO good that for one second he swept me away into believing a single word he said, because he has a long and public history by now of saying one thing and then doing something else. Don't listen to what he says, watch what he does. For the wealthy, much has been accomplished. That's the important thing.

Oh yeah, one more thing about Obama's speech that I intensely disliked.. and I mean really disliked, it just got my back up... was his constant framing of Americans and government policy as being market-driven.

For a specific example, Obama kept talking about how we need to educate Americans so that we can be more efficient and "own the world economy". First of all, I'm not sure that I want to "own the world economy". I don't think that should be our goal. Secondly, the idea that the ONLY reason to educate people is to be more efficient workers is anathema. What, we can't educate people just so that they can make better personal and collective decisions??

This goes along with the Hiring Retarded People for $2/hour thread. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=57367 Libertarians and their corporate suck-up fellow travelers (Tea Partiers and others) believe that the "worth" of a person can be measured somehow by their fitness in The Market because The Market can (and should) determine the worth of everything. In their minds, people exist only to serve The Market, rather than a market existing to serve people. They have turned value and worth on its head, and made people worthless and the market everything. How is that different from fascism, or their view of communism?

Clearly, Obama "buys into" that market-uber-alles viewpoint.
