Military red tape, V.A. incompetence, and a general apathy concerning war vets' psychiatric conditions are what led to this terrible incident. Nothing ever changes. It's amazing that these things don't happen more often.

Also, I'd give far more credence to what a Lt Col in Alan West had to say on the matter than most others.

What's wrong with the US Army? ON a military base with 45,000 soldiers the official response to a shooter is to "shelter in place", to hide, to wait for the cops? There were no security guards, no sentries? Nobody was armed? Actually, considering DoD policy, probably a bunch of people were carrying guns, but weren't issued bullets, likely because guns are hazardous, or maybe to prevent fraggings.
But where's fighting spirit, that great traditional American value? "If attacked, just go hide???"
