You know, Chris, the other side of that question is "Why are so many good people no longer on RWED?", and what it says about the few who remain.

As it happens, I've been on a few other forums for many years--in one case, fifteen plus, in another over ten. They have moderators, and a good portion of the people who were on them when I first got there still ARE, having never been driven off by the kind of shit that goes on here.

I come back out of pure boredom. I used to come here to interact with people out there everywhere, but now it's mostly that there really isn't anywhere else to go. I've learned all that is learnable from people on the internets and I keep coming back because this IS the only game in town. I'd rather chew my own toenails than do FB or Twitter or whatever the kids are doing. I don't do well with actual people living here because I just can't talk about crops or sports for HOURS. I've yet to have an actual conversation with anyone in this STATE who knows anything interesting or unexpected. At least on FFF you never know for sure what or who is gonna pop up, do you? I guess that's as close to a compliment as I get these days.

I still think that the idea of Haken actually being an acronym for a government agency paid for by tax payer dollars to collect Firefly fans with strong political beliefs for study is totally plausable.

Dang. That was 4 years ago!

I think RWED was better then. The discussions seemed more general, there were more people and there was more effort to try and stay on topic, as opposed to the instant "Classic Raptard" or "Obama worship" insults these days.

It may just be nostalgia, but it's just not the same environment I considered so interesting and educational then. I learned stuff through discussion. Fat chance of that these days.

So now I only post when I'm in a pissy mood to begin with and my contributions are accordingly low on quality. Meh.

I agree with all of the above. And hey, great to see you, Agentrouka, you'll notice yours is one of the voices I miss (I'd have mentioned missing Nickerson, too, among others, except that those do pop in now and again, like Mal4, Oonj, G, Wish, etc.).

I don't think it's just a case of an old show that's been off the air; as I said, some of the forums I'm still on are quite old, but people are still there, and when I came to RWED in July of 2009, it was already more active than the rest of FFF, and people were saying that thing about Firefly being long gone, etc.

I still lurk from time to time. It's not that I'm driven off, it's just that it's so "America centric". But, as it's a primarily US board, I get that. It's hard to comment on stuff that I only have fleeting knowledge of, and the gun thing has run it's course more than once!!!! I can post some Brit stuff up, but then the US guys only have fleeting interest in that, so it's Catch22 really. And those that do want to talk about brit stuff end up slagging off The Queen or inciting the War of Independance, so it gets a bit counter productive. Oh well.:)

Hardly. This is still a site dedicated to a television show that's been TWELVE YEARS since a new episode.

And considering the kinda shit I've seen moderators pull, I suspect you'd see a mass exodus from here if we ever got any. More than just the normal trickling attrition of people just losing interest or becoming frustrated, but all at once.

People don't like someone telling them what they can and can't say. And chances are, those of you who want moderators won't be the ones deciding either. Nothing like getting kicked from a board for an honest statement of political beliefs.

2. New ideas occasionally spring up and receive unfiltered input from all parties. I do not see this at any other website. ****However, I continue to doubt to veracity of many posters, which brings the value of this point down quite a lot.

2. I am able to connect with people who I would not otherwise encounter in RL. This includes people I agree with, people I learn form, and people I find abhorrent. I would not hear from these people otherwise.

3. I am refreshingly free to tell all of these people exactly what I think of them.It is a joy, with all the limits RL puts on me (on all of us, I'm sure), to be able to share my 100% honest opinion without fear of reprisal. Other than possible flaming, which I now know I can handle with ease.

4. Old personalities I like. The above goods and bads don't add up to enough good to keep me here, except there are individual posters I like. If they ever quit, I will stop checking in.

My interest in US politics peaked in about 2005, with the War in Iraq but has gradually tailed off. I struggle to find anything of interest in the politics that is posted here. Libs vs conservatives. Each hate the other. Don't know who most of the references are about. I dont post anything much on what happens locally as its not much of interest to anybody who doesn't live on my continent.

I personally like hearing about the UK, but may have little to say.

Hardly. This is still a site dedicated to a television show that's been TWELVE YEARS since a new episode.

And considering the kinda shit I've seen moderators pull, I suspect you'd see a mass exodus from here if we ever got any. More than just the normal trickling attrition of people just losing interest or becoming frustrated, but all at once.

People don't like someone telling them what they can and can't say. And chances are, those of you who want moderators won't be the ones deciding either. Nothing like getting kicked from a board for an honest statement of political beliefs.

You think there's drama now? Moderators would make this place like frikkin' death row. Take sides with a moderator and tell on other board members or else.

Then you have not been on the forums I am talking. Yes, some boards have Mods that go overboard. Others simply keep people from saying hateful things to each other.

With a change on here now we might have a bunch of people leave. We might also have some that still lurk start posting again.

Not even slightly. I left another FIREFLY board because it, too, was unmoderated in any way and the people in that version of an RWED they pretty much RAN that forum, attacked anyone they didn't like mercilessly and went after me themselves on the mental-health website I ran myself, upsetting people there so I had to make the site private. One of them even went to another mental-health site (one which I'd never even been ON), joined, then claimed they'd been there for years, knew me, and lied about me back on the Firefly site. I actually got in contact with the person who ran that other site, they were aghast and kicked the person off. A couple of them followed me here, or already were here, and started in on me when I arrived. That Firefly site and this one are the only unmoderated forums I've ever been on.

I never said moderated places were perfect, I only suggested that SOME constraints might be helpful. (ETA: And what Mal4 says goes for me too...except the part about knowing you well enough, which I would never claim.)

Sig, I never claimed it was all sweetness and light. The problem existed when I got here, too…as such, I had/have no idea how many voices I never heard because they'd already left. It was something I chose to try and get used to, because there were voices back then that made it worth staying. My IMPRESSION is that there is less reasonable discussion now and fewer voices involved.

"Who used to post that the USA should be destroyed?" That would be, Gino, I believe? As always, I wasn't talking black and white, I was pointing out the other side of the issue.

I wasn't thinking of anyone specifically, it's just that time makes almost anything seem better in retrospect. It's funny, I could always tell when elections were coming up by how strident people got. The closer the election, the more strident the tone.

Ah, you're right, I think it was Gino. Altho IIRC both Gino and Succotash were non-Americans, so maybe they both got bored of the parochialism.

Other people who left that I used to talk with a lot: SargeantX. He was an extreme libertarian, kind of like Geezer but more so. Wulfenstar. Kind of like 6ix, but nastier. Finn, very pro-military, active service member.

The board has gotten a lot smaller. The diversity of voices is less than it used to be. If I miss anything, it's the larger group that used to be here. I think all of the newer people here would have enjoyed the diversity.

I kind of hate to say this, but a REALLY bad president brings a lot of discussion out of this place. Meaty issues make for excellent repartee. Obama is just weak and most of the shit he's doing wrong just ain't a bad as our previous target of outrage. Hence the endless and boring Benghazi stuff, and the focus on personal attacks. Honestly, the whole issue of climate change seems to me to be the most interesting 'bad' thing we discuss here these days.
