The colours are noticeably deeper & richer, and fine detail is crystal clear. I'm not tempted to replace my entire DVD collection, but my favourites will definitely get upgraded bit by bit. So, have you taken the plunge yet, or are you still all Fred Flintstone-ing it with your ancient DVD technology?

Quote:Originally posted by Storymark: Of course in the future, it'll all be streaming. But that leaves you at the mercy of the rights holders, and when and where they chose to make them available. Plus, Im a film collector - the cloud means diddly to a collector. Vinyl is a niche market, too - but its still there (and their sales have been growing for the last few years). And for now, streaming doesn't offer the same picture quality as physical, and if the service providers are able to put the data caps on that they want - won't be any time soon. So Im glad to have them for a number of reasons. “Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”? I don't know what that means. I bought my plasma a few years ago because plasma is on the way out and it was pretty damned cheap for a big screen. I forget how big. 48"? Big enough, it ought to be, though with blu-ray I find myself wanting a bigger screen. And 3D. :) *-------------------------------------------------* What trolls reveal about themselves when they troll: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57532 *-------------------------------------------------*

You don't want to push a 1080p image through a 720 output, and old school 480 content is kind of missing the point to watch on a 1080p tv (upsampling is better but only so much). Some people are looking at early 4K sets (huge price drop by Sony to gin up interest), but there isn't 4K content yet, not much at least. The Netflix drama is being released in 4K, but just like the early days of any new format, it'll be a slow rollout. Remember HD players?? I actually know some fool who bought 4 Serenity disks in HD thinking he would give them to libraries and friends and be though of as a swell person. Ehhh! (Anyone need an HD Serenity disk?) If you see a 4k tv with the right content, the image has 4 times the detail, and you can see it, it's amazing, it's so sharp it hurts, but you have to wonder: is that really better? Do I really need to see more detail in Kevin Spacey's face?

Quote:Originally posted by G: Imagine if you could buy screens and computing power separately. Local home network and WiFi makes it possible, but we're not there yet. You buy one computer and put it in a closet and it serves your whole apt/house. You have a single wireless keyboard you can take in to whatever room you want to where there is a screen and do work/entertainment/whatever. You could get screens of whatever size you want, they all get the computer feed - your computer is essentially in every room that you have a screen. Much like we do now when we change inputs for DVD and Cable, we would just have another input option for Computer. Screens themselves are pretty cheap - you could have a giant Movie screen and smaller ones for computing and one computing power box with terrabytes of storage locally and one keyboard, all for cheaper than we do now.
