Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

If you took your cues from the political rhetoric in Washington — or even from the occasional virulent debate in the economics blogosphere — you would think the whole question of fiscal stimulus is highly contested.

But it’s not. There’s widespread agreement among economists that the stimulus act has helped boost the economy.

The Initiative on Global Markets at the University of Chicago — hardly a hotbed of liberal or Keynesian thought — regularly surveys a number of the leading American economists about a variety of policy issues. The economists surveyed constitute a good sample of the leading economists in the nation, and the panel was chosen to be geographically diverse, to include older and younger economists, and importantly, to include Democrats, Republicans and independents.

36 to 1 voted that the stimulus lowered unemployment by the end of 2010, and 25 to 2 voted that the benefits of the ARRA 'exceeded the costs' (with 10 uncertain).

States used the money to not lay people off. Most are clueless that it would have been so much worse without it. That said many mistakes were made. Obama let Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi run rough shod over it creating some unnecessary problems with the Republicans.

What good are economists doing? If policymakers ignore the consensus, and if policymakers's views about how the world works are completely insensitive to evidence and results, does economists's knowledge matter? If a tree falls in the academic forest, but nobody powerful in Brussels or Washington hears it, did it make a sound?

The whole point of economics is to make a difference in the larger world away from the University. If it is not making a difference, what's the point in studying economics? A long-term hope that someday somebody in power will realize that their emotions, self-confidence and primitive intuitions are not quite enough to lead well a country?

Any evidence that this is the panel's political affiliation, or are you taking this on faith?

As noted in the article, the University of Chicago (which chose the panel) is traditionally conservative in its economics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_school_of_economics

None what so ever. Just me being a smart Alec, is all.

You put A trillion $ on credit, spend it ... ANYWHERE, and it's gonna have some sort of impact. Not as much as getting folks back to work, but what the hell. Barry had the House/Senate , and he chose to go w/ O-care instead.

.. Lowest labor participation rate in 75 years.

.. Median household income in decline for six consecutive years.

.. National Debt doubled in six years.

.. Federal Reserve / U.S. Treasury continue to de-value U.S. Dollar by injecting $1 Trillion a year to stabilize Wall Street. That's the only "lifting" going on.

If numbers aren't your thing (in 2009, when Obama took office, the Unemployment rate was at one point 10.2% - Average was 9.3% - Bureau of Labor Statistics. But as of August 2014, it's 6.2%)

Then maybe a little unscientific observation by yours truly:

In my neighborhood, since Obama took office, they expanded the existing shopping mall to more than 100 stores; they have since built 2 additional malls within a half mile radius and are building a high rise complex within one of those malls.

Not only that they are completing the addition of 2 eateries - Longhorn's and Olive Garden, which will bring 200 additional jobs to the area (according to the newspapers). Not to mention the stimulus to the local mom & pop stores and businesses. property values have also gone up, in addition to the rise in the fringe businesses in the immediate area.

You may not want to admit to the stimulus doing anything positive, plus you may not believe the numbers put forth by a conservative think tank, but when you look at how unemployment was once 9.3% and now buildings are going up, well that's something you can't deny. It's physical evidence of the economy moving in a positive direction.

You could say that it's not due to the stimulus. Okay, it's not due to the stimulus, or Obama. It's the tooth fairy, or Rush Limbaugh investing his millions. No matter how you look at it, something spurred on this economic shot in the arm. Tell me, as if I have to ask, what do you say. Do you think it's because of the wonderfully annoying Tea Party and their cronies, or, heaven help us, Ted Cruz's rantings, or even the brilliant machinations of the Republicans with their do-nothing strategy. Tell me, oh wise one!

You are denying the TRUTH. Or Pravda, or TASS, something like that.
The economy only contracted 2.9% earlier this year (the most in history). AND it only cost Trillions in debt. How can you DENY the benefits of Son of Son of Stimulus? You must be a DENIER! And a RACIST!
