Seems like we all have something in common. I was raised Catholic, too. And although no longer religious, I still remember the excitement of being old enough to go to midnight Mass, the deep quiet of a snowy night, the hymns and carols, the Christmas lights shining on (and sometimes through) the snow, the love that I felt from my mom and dad then. All I can do is try to re-create that for our child, and put up lights so that anyone who looks at our house will know that we took the time to be pretty, to put a smile on someone's face, just because its Christmas. Peace on earth and good will towards all.

As for playing up Christmas, I gotta tip my hat at Steven Moffat and the Dr Who folks. I don't know if it's still as prevalent in English culture, today, as the show makes out, but they really do seem to be all in for Christmas across the pond. And even if it's just the show's take on it, kudos for them for at least trying to keep it something special. It plays to the kid in each of us, as I see it, who never grows up.
