One of my latest favorite Xmas carol versions... "Carol of the Bells" by Pentatonix.

It takes a little getting used to... it's been (literally) jazzed up, with beat boxer Kevin Olusola and bass Avi Kaplan doing a very credible job as the bass and drum of a jazz band ... but this has become one of my go-to versions for Xmas cheer.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

And, check out this killer cover of "Radioactive" by the Pentatonix and Lindsey Sterling

Better on 8-track. Cassette tape is too sober.

Do you remeber the show ER? Well, one year they had a story of an intra-hospital caroling contest and the 'x-ray department' showed up and did an acapella version of Carol of the Bells that blew me away. You could hear the snow blowing through the nighttime city. (After that stellar performance, as everyone stood around in shocked silence, the Anthony Edwards character said - 'they have way too much time on their hands.') I haven't been able to find anything like it since.

This gives you a hint:

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face;
With stars to fill my dream;
I am a traveler of both time and space;
To be where I have been

That was really great. Sometimes I get a little down for Christmas because I have 3 family members that are in the House of the Lord, but this soothes the soul. One of my favorite Christmas songs (along with Little Drummer Boy & Come All Ye Faithful).

Thanks Kiki for posting

KIKI - I was a fan of ER for many years; I looked online for that ep and couldn't find it. It would have been AWESOME!

DEVERSE- OMG playing drums in the snow in shorts??? Such energy! Loved the music!

BRENDA- You would hate me, I cheerfully hum along with my Xmas favorites in the store and I don't care who's listening, or if they think I'm crazy (which they prolly do).

6IX - hahaha!

The part of a song that always make me cry is the line: "Someday soon, we all will be together ...." because that will never happen again. I feel the losses thinking about them, and their absence, and how deeply I still miss them, and how I wish that we could be together again.

It's a melancholy feeling, sad but true, but I always get happy around this time of year because of the fond memories I have of Christmas. It's like we get to start fresh - peace on earth, good will toward men, and all - ever since I was a boy I felt that way.
It is not the same without my mother and 2 sisters, I miss them terribly. So I live the best I can to honor them. My mom raised us as Catholics and instilled in us, along with my grandmother, a love for Christmas that lives within me to this day.
And even though I'm not religious, I keep a place for them in my heavy heart and smile, because they are with me. Merry Christmas Kiki

Sorry for your losses, SGG. Know the feeling well.

As for playing up Christmas, I gotta tip my hat at Steven Moffat and the Dr Who folks. I don't know if it's still as prevalent in English culture, today, as the show makes out, but they really do seem to be all in for Christmas across the pond. And even if it's just the show's take on it, kudos for them for at least trying to keep it something special. It plays to the kid in each of us, as I see it, who never grows up.

Seems like we all have something in common. I was raised Catholic, too. And although no longer religious, I still remember the excitement of being old enough to go to midnight Mass, the deep quiet of a snowy night, the hymns and carols, the Christmas lights shining on (and sometimes through) the snow, the love that I felt from my mom and dad then. All I can do is try to re-create that for our child, and put up lights so that anyone who looks at our house will know that we took the time to be pretty, to put a smile on someone's face, just because its Christmas. Peace on earth and good will towards all.

I feel sorry that your x-mases weren't good.

I was raised Catholic as well. But for me the most meaningful part of the holiday is the return of the sun. Or for those of you south of the equator - it's departure.

I remember the crunch of fresh-fallen snow as my uncle took me with him to the local bakery to get fresh-baked Italian bread, sweet bread, and a box of small cookies for the kids at my grandmother's house. The smell of the bread would waft up the block and would get stronger as we approached.

When we got back to my grandmother's, kids and adults alike would gather around just to smell the bread. My grandmother would tell me to round up the kids and bring them into the kitchen to sit at the table. She would slice open the bread and place several pats of butter on the hot bread, which would instantly melt, and it was hot chocolate all around. Once finished, it was out of her kitchen and off to play, because now it was the adults turn. My grandmother ruled. Grown men would respect her, cause she drank like a sailor (she would never get drunk) and watched wrestling and took no guff from anyone. She was a special lady.

That was Christmas for me until her sudden death when I was 12 years old. She was a remarkable woman. Rest in Peace, Abuela!

So is Deverse, I think.

I asked years ago if there might be a common thread in the people that post here and we came with "most women here don't wear much makeup". I think it's funny it took years for most of you to admit you were or are Catholic.

It's not that they were terrible, they just weren't magical. And they could be stressful. My mum worked in retail, which is a terrible job at Christmas time, especially if you are also responsible for all the shopping and prep for Christmas day.

I've learned over the years to embrace traditions that I enjoy and let go of the rest, which includes a lot of the schmalzy awful stuff.
