Great article. This is what really needs to be promoted if we are ever to escape the 'War on Terror'.

I'd hate to say it because in principle going over ones religion for the purpose for improvment is always a good thing. BUT, I've seen Irshad Manji in a number of interviews and debates before and she is nothing but an extremist.

Scholars who have politly told her that she is misinterpreting the Koran have met with interuptions and raised voices. She has demonstrated an inability to listen and to learn. She wouldn't even let the scholars finish there explination and proof that she was wrong.

In fact, I see her as putting more fuel on the fire. All her "arguments" have done is further polarize the situation.

Hopefully someone reasonable will come along one day.

There's a semi-infinite number of reasonable Muslims but they're generally not the ones invited onto television.

sigh! no body on media wants to hear from moderates because they are boring and not entertaining enough. They might be put on for a couple of sound bites after a major disaster; but the great majority of the time it's folks with the sh*t sticks stirring the pot. It riles up basic emotions and get people to respond in kind. The media people knows this and they themselves have been conditioned to salivate everytime an extremist position is taken by their speaker - if they don't take that tone, the interviewer will prod them until they do.

The media has even managed to malign the idea of balance and fair coverage format because of this - just look at some of these discussions where they invite both "sides" of any issue - gun control after Columbine for example - and the commentator poke and prod at the parents until they respond viciously...

I was hopeful that there might be something there when I saw that website, but maybe the author was proded and pryed to behave that way on interviews - it wouldn't surprise me (not sure though, since the claim is that it's a consistent observation across many interviews?). But I'm willing to give her to benefit of a doubt until I've actually seen her speak. I might also consider that the style of exchange observed *is* in fact the style of debate used by islamic scholars.

@SimonWho:
True, but what I've seen, she's the one that is outlandish. In fact, in every interview and debate I've seen her in, not only was she the most unresaonable, she was the only one not keeping her cool. In fact the scholar was quite controlled.

As a general comment, sometimes I really find it a blessing that I'm not exposed to american "news" much; I'm not really exposed to this drivel.

That's too bad if it's true. I guess it's hard to get much publicity if you're a soft-spoken, polite moderate Muslim scholar/cleric, though...
