I can't believe it, but I actually agree with the Greens on this one. All the problems of the World are related to overpopulation in my opinion. I never have understood the compulsion some people have make more children than is necessary to maintain our species. I would never want any Government restrictions, but I hope some day people will be smart enough to see the obvious.

I saw a comedian lately that talked about the issue of endangered species and pollution as it relates to the human population. His take is that if the population of the World was only 50,000 people, everyone could drive a Tank and shoot a Bald Eagle and there wouldn't be a problem. Not only that everyone on Earth could have a ticket to the Super Bowl.

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't think the main problem is over-population, but rather the misuse of our land resources and the over reliance on livestock as food. In my area, I would estimate that at least 80% of the agricultural land is used to grow livestock feed, which is rapidly depleting the soil so it wouldn't be efficiently usable to grow vegetables and grains for human consumption.

I am not a vegetarian, but I do think it would be infinitely more healthy for people and the earth for us to consume less meat and more vegetables. Add to that the fact we would have much more food available to help undeveloped countries that we currently do if we used our farm lands for production of more vegetables and less feed for livestock.

I don't think it necessary for anyone to restrict the number of children they have as long as they can adequately provide for them. However, if they were to restrict themselves to two offspring and use any extra resources to help those less fortunate then that would be even better.

From the same kind of people who think Ben & Jerry's icecream should be made with human breast milk, come more advice when it comes to "social enginering"! No smoking in bars, no more trans-fat in food, now they're working on how to make you believe if you have more than 2 kids we'll all end up in a real life "Soylent Green". These people like to say that they are pro choice, but they are taking choices away! Then again when they say "pro choice" they mean abortion, not the way you chose to live your life. Chris, I'm not sure how much of that rant was sarcasm, but it was cutting an awful wide swath. The problem with bombing, you hit anything in the general area, a lot of disagreements on you there, maybe on all of them. Bin Laden is a Saudi, his father was Yemeni, but he was born in Saudi Arabia.

Tax cuts WITH spending cuts are the path to Utopia. Sadly, Big zerO thinks we can entitle our way out of the recession. Sorry, but I'm w/ Rush on hoping Obama fails, miserably.

I'm pro life, but if you've murdered a little girl and left her body in a patch of Florida swamp, you deserve to die. If you saw the heads off of a journalist, and video tape it, you deserve to die. If you blow up a busload of school children or are a serial killer....yep, you deserve to die.

It was just about all sarcasm, except for the fringe dolts that believe that view stands for ALL Repubs, like Whozit's statement seemed to cover ALL liberals.
AU & Who's supreme falacy in all this is that they see white knights in the GOP, and devils on the 'other side'.

Chris, the Bin Laden is not a Saudi argument is going to lose. It's the MIC fantasy that he's somewhere in Pakistan. He's probably in Dubai, or back in S.A. When we supposedly had him "cornered": I think both Kerry and Rummy announced proudly that they *knew* he was in Tora Bora, it actually turned out he was in France at the time.

Now, I'd wager he's a goner. The man was in terrible health in 98, he's over the limit for an opium addict, even assuming he got a kidney transplant. So, he might be under Saudi Arabia.

Actually we nailed him in December 2001, just by random chance.

He liked to hear himself talk, and generally kept the radio close while up in the mountains cause of that and the fact that it helped keep his tent warm up there, see...

And one of our folks managed to get lucky on a bombing run and hit the radio, blowing it to scrap, and the shrapnel both wounded OBL severely and irrepairably damaged his dialisys machine - at which point he gave one of his subordinates the equivalent of a last will and testimony, and shortly thereafter expired and was interred in an unmarked grave in accordance with his own tradition, and because it would give his enemies fits not knowing for sure he was dead.

But seriously, outside the mainstream american media this is all well known, people talk, even when they ain't supposed to - it's just that our Gov wants to prop him up as some kinda Emmanuel Goldstein and the fact of his death complicates that so they refuse to acknowledge it.

But again, we got his ass over the week of 11-15 December 2001 and most of the world knows it cause they own media DID cover it to one degree or another, you can check for yourself if you have any doubts.

/snark on
Of course, he could be a vampire, in which case we need to round up some slayers...
/snark off

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Not with AU or Whozit. See, the Saudi's are our pals, so obviously Bin Laden was not 'officially' Saudi.
Our friends would never do stuff to hurt us...except Saddam, but when he started doing bad stuff, he was no longer 'officially' our pal. Like Noriega, when he 'started' his crap, he was also not our pal anymore.
So the Saudis wear white hats; Bin Laden wears/wore a towel.

Rush gets hooked on pain killers, then off them, and he's still vilified . Yeah, there's coherent thinking going on here.

FREM, I'm surpirsed Yeah, could happen to anyone, brain disconnect: Last Will and Testament

But I've heard this one, then again, he could have faked his death also. I think that there's no way to know for sure.

There are several things we do know:

1. Zawahiri became the spiritual leader before Osama died. I assume he's probably dead by now, simply by statistics. Every once in a while people will defy statistics such as stay alive while paralyzed for more than 10 years, etc. but it's not something to bet on.

2. Al Qaeda isn't a terrorist organization, it's an undergound for any Sunni use. The Mujahideen is a militant group, some of *its* branches have committed terrorism, others have done far worse. None have committed genocide, but there have been some massive slaughters and conflicts with very high casualties.

3. The Mujahideen isn't an opponent of the US either. We support it some places, oppose it others.

4. You're absolutely right about the last without question, I think this line has been circulating for a while: OBL is Goldstein. Anyone who buys any other line, imho, is just pathetically ignorant. Even if OBL is alive somewhere, he's not PE#1 and never was, he was always Goldstein.

lol. Just thought to self: Rahm Emanuel Goldstein.

[edit]

Rap: Gotta disagree. I know too many liberals to accept this line. No one like Al Franken. Franken is an a**hole, and everyone on both sides seems to think so. Even Jon Stewart thinks he's an a**hole, and he knows him personally.

Aw hell, Chris - these are the very same people (like AuRetard, remember) who insist that the entire economic collapse is the sole responsibility of Barney Frank. He'll sit here and insist that the president can't really exert any control or influence over the economy (unless he's named Obama, and said influence is negative), but somehow a ranking committee member from the out-of-power-at-the-time party CAN single-handedly collapse the entire world economy.

DREAMTROVE

Rap,

No, it doesn't. That would be absurd. Why would we sink our own fleet for an incident? If we wanted to spark a war, all we need to do is scuttle one vessel. taking out pearl harbor would be moronic.

The conspiracy theory is actually that we did nothing, but it's patently false, I laid out the actual sequence of events, which were early morning, I don't remember which time zone the times were from, they had 30 minutes to get a response from DC. It took 32. That's not a conspiracy, that's beaurocracy. Today? It would take hours. Maybe 32 of them. That's the reality of Katrina. Everyone blames the other side, the republican admin, or the democratic state govt. The reality is that our govt. is such a bloated bureaucracy it can't respond. In 1906, it took just over five minutes to respond. It's just a trend over time, the minute men have become the "sometime next week men."

The "we killed nick berg" theory has a lot of chilling evidence. I don't buy it, because I never know for sure but it shed some doubt in my mind, enough to say "this is at least as well constructed at the theory the govt put together." That leads me to the "we don't really know who killed nick berg." Either side could have had a motive. we responded to the incident, taking actions that might not have been taken otherwise... Either side might have had people who wanted those actions taken, for whatever reason.

This is where I am on 9-11. Some of the 9-11 conspiracists have presented a radically better case than the govt., but these are generally the "dunno" crowd. The people who present a "these guys did it" generally present a weak 9-11 case, somewhere on par with the govts. The truth is, i dunno. My guess on that one would be "probably both." Some Islamic extremists and a handful of US insiders conspired. I doubt it was OBL, I doubt it was GW Bush. But once it was done, it was worth it for every islamic terrorist to claim credit, and several did. (obl didn't) but it was great recruitment for them. It was absolutely essential for every us govt. official to help in the cover up of any us govt involvement, because the union would collapse otherwise.

As I mentioned before:

It costs New York $200 billion a year to be part of this Federal Union. We pay $270B in taxes, and get $70B back in govt. payments (excluding entitlements, which are a net wash.) What we get in return? One thing: Security. That we will be defended against attack. Since 9-11 there has been a lot of doubt, because that defense failed. Now, if it were to come out that there was insider involvement in that failure, even so much as someone sabotaging or misdirecting or delaying defense to let the attacks happen? New York would secede. If it didn't, we'd overthrow it, and secede. We could all use the extra $12,000 per person per year. And NY is not Iraq. It has far more military power, rougher terrain, and many, many, many times as much money.

Follow that logic through and you won't conclude that there was an inside guy or two. But you will be forced to concluded that if there was, it's as much as the govt. is worth to cover that up.

So, 90% of conspiracy is crap. The other 10% is very troubling.

So, my 2 cents: We don't know for sure who beheaded whom. We don't know the whole story on most of the stuff that goes on. Anyone might have hired terrorists anywhere in the middle east for any purpose, and any of those events have to be looked at with a strong element of the unknown.

The only thing I find I can use to sort it all out is the golden rule of investigation:
Motive, means, opportunity.

In the case of Nick Berg, that might be anyone, including us. Not drawing that conclusion myself, just saying, I dunno.
