Fun fantasy...check it out:

Quote:

It's National Robotics Week, a time when students, scientists and others in the technology community celebrate the increasingly important role that real-world robots are playing in our lives.

Militaries use robots to attack enemies and destroy land mines. Private companies sell robots that let their users see, hear and talk remotely.

Just this week, NASA and General Motors announced that they'll work together to send a human-like robot to the international space station.

It's advances like those that spark the imagination. That makes us wonder: Could the robots who've entertained us in science fiction one day become a reality?

In most cases, the answer is, "Of course not."

Science likely won't ever give us a booze-swilling, cigar-smoking robot like Bender from "Futurama" or the alternately sexy, cunning and deadly androids of "Blade Runner."

But it's fun to imagine, right?

For centuries -- Leonardo da Vinci's notes show he was working on an automaton in 1495 -- we've had a love/hate relationship with robots.

We're both fascinated with all the good they could do and terrified of what would happen if they got too smart.

So, in the video graphic above, we take a look at five science-fiction robots we wish were real and five we're really glad are just make-believe.

Plenty more robots deserved a spot on this list. Let us know in the comments section which of our robot overlords ... er ... friends you would have included.

So what kind of robot(s) would YOU wish were real, or are glad are not real? Or which of the ten would you wish were real, or are grateful they're not?

That should go swimmingly. I can see it now - robot up on blocks, one eye permanently open, the other permanently closed, outside the double-wide portion of the space station. With a Calvin-pissing-on-a-Ford-logo sticker on its ass and "Truk-Nutz" hanging from where its crotch would be...

You know, if we actually treated robots well, like the children they actually are to us, maybe we wouldn't have to worry about the inevitable overthrow. It's always bothered me, whenever I see sci-fi robots in subservient positions or being mistreated.

Though sex robots and robot love does creep me the fuck out. See the whole "they're our children" thing. Why's we gotta figure out how to have sex with everything we create? That's not a function they need, that's just something (weird) humans want. Come on.

Then again, if I were a robot and I was concerned about my equal status with humans, I might think that humans deliberately not trying to replicate some function in robots when they give robots everything else would be some form of denial or segregating thing. That by cutting robots off from something that's important to humans, humans might be deliberately limiting potential, even though the real reason is that things are just a whole lot easier without sex.

Wargh... It's still creepy, though.

I'm all for giving robots every right and privilege and treating them as non-human persons. I mean, I'd even give them the necessary functions if it'd help them feel more equal. But just... WHY would any human want that? Why would any ROBOT want that?

We're talking saline fluids getting much too near some hot circuity, and however sexy that might SOUND, seems more likely to end up in a ruined hunk of melted scrap metal and a crispy human. Does not seem smart or erotic.

Byte, you're forgetting one important thing: Most of the advances in robotics are coming from MEN. And men, at their most basic, have the ethics and morality of a dog: If we can't eat it or fuck it, then piss on it!

I think you'll find that when it comes to innovation, where men are concerned, most of the really remarkable stuff revolves around sex and war. Shows where the priorities of men are, huh? Think about it: We could focus our collective energy on a cure for cancer, or on a pill that gives a man a hard-on. Which one do we now have available to us?

I rest my case.

Sheeit, Byte - considerin we ain't managed to even BEGIN treating our real children with anything even remotely resembling dignity and respect, I cannot say I am hopeful for the robots lot, yanno ?

On the rest of it, and the whole sexbot thing, imma quote from a previous thread on the topic.
Quote:

I think they're a bit late on the draw, honestly.
Dunno about the sexbot thing, but behaviorally and conversationally, the Actroid DER2 is in a class of her own.

Of course, most human-like robot development is still stuck in Uncanny Valley, and it has a ways to go...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

But I kid you not, the very first time I saw a clip of Actroid here, I happened to be munching on a small plate of brownies and my *first instinct* about 20-30 seconds into the clip, was to offer her one.

The whole idea of sexbots gives me the wiggies cause I do have a prudish streak, but then I thought about the badly disabled or horribly disfigured...

That and I am pretty sure that while maybe less willing to admit it, most of us have some "could it possibly be worse than..." stories we'd never dare share too, don't we ?

Anyhows, the folks down at Sanrio (and yes, Actroid is made by the same folks that make Hello Kitty) deserve some serious cred in this biz for making a robot that manages to provoke an "awww.." reaction rather than "wtf?!".

Now, I dunno if it's just me, or what, but given that indeed, my first instinctive reaction was to share food, a very primal gesture of of trust and interaction, when my instinctive reaction to other adult *humans* is hostility...

I guess it's perhaps because my consciousness doesn't consider them "guilty of the crime" or something, I dunno, but robot-people don't provoke me whatever, and human-people do.

Kinda with ya on that, Byte. I don't know *WHY* people are so intent on developing machines they can screw, but it doesn't say much for the future of the species, does it, that they'd rather have sex with machinery than with each other...

Hey, the human-to-human version squicks me out about as much. But at least that one serves a function. With robots? The closest analogy they'd have is swapping data packets, not swapping fluids with a human. There's no purpose they'd have in going at it with a human, except for social or status bullshit, which would would probably still be confusing, incomprehensible, and even a little gross for them. So again, why would they bother?

I'm assuming consent is a factor here, because the alternative is even MORE disturbing. Like NGE Shinji masturbating over Asuka while she's comatose wrong. It's a violation, unauthorized access, 401 error.

Oh, that IS truly hysterical...and all too true. Except you for got "...or go to war with it." How about men run most insurance companies, so Viagra is covered but previous cesaerians mean denial as a "pre-existing condition"?

Gee, I wonder if previous use of Viagra would be considered a "pre-existing condition"? Or if just being MALE would?

Found: lost male dignity. Reasonably good condition, appears to consist mostly of toasted buns, lettuce, tomato, a slice of American cheese, and a hamburger. Slightly burnt by the "feminism" stove setting.

There's a note attached:

"Dear men,

There really isn't any need to be apologetic or self-deprecating. We have boobs, and we have the vote now, so we can pretty much get anywhere we need to go without pretending that your entire gender is a bunch of dumb lecherous dogs. Actually, things go better when everyone takes equal responsibility for their actions.

Thanks,

Hot female robots...like Number 6 are an obvious first choice. Then they try to kill you and its time to rethink things.

If I had to pick, I'd want a robot I could count on to have my back and save my neck...not one that would shoot me in the back or snap my neck.

So my choices:

1. K-9
2. R2-D2
3. Data
4. The Good Terminator from Terminator 2, not the pansy one from Terminator 3 or the 'take my heart' one from T-4.
5. VINcent
