America loves a winner!

The Obama Administration is under political pressure to reverse its ill-considered deep water drilling moratorium, and the latest blowback comes from seven angry experts from the National Academy of Engineering who say their views were distorted to justify the ban.

In the wake of the oil spill, President Obama asked Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to produce a report on new drilling safety recommendations. Then on May 27 Mr. Obama announced a six-month deep water drilling ban, justifying it on the basis of Mr. Salazar's report, a top recommendation of which was the moratorium. To lend an air of technical authority, ...

Hello,

Until every rig is checked and fixed, until the accident is fully understood, until the failures of industry and government are scrutinized, we ought not to rush for one more drop offshore.

Excellent try. Unfortunately just a teeny bit off the mark:
Quote:

In a scathing statement this week, the seven experts explained that the report draft they had reviewed did not include a six-month drilling moratorium. That was added only after they signed off. "The Secretary should be free to recommend whatever he thinks is correct, but he should not be free to use our names to justify his political decisions," wrote the seven in a letter to Gulf Coast politicians. One of the seven, University of California at Berkeley engineering professor Bob Bea, further explained in an email cited in the New Orleans Times-Picayune: "Moratorium was not a part" of the "report we consulted-advised-reviewed. Word from [the Department of Interior] was it was a [White House] request." The WSJ thinks that the credit goes to energy czarina Carol Browner, who has been loudly touting the ban to show the [administration] is doing something.

NOLA is an East New Orleans newspaper; the above is a comment posted to the article...tho' it's from a commentor, it appears to be a good quote.

So their claim of "distortion" is that the White House added a moritorium to something they consulted/advised/reviewed. If it's so, then consulting, advising and reviewing isn't WRITING the report, and there's nothing wrong with the White House adding that they believe the report indicates a moratorium is needed. That point is debatable. But they also, note, write that the Wall Street Journal believes the "credit goes to energy czarina Carol Browner".

Ergo, take Obama out of it; he caved to pressure you can say if you will, but HE didn't "distort" anything, it appears he ADDED A CONCLUSION.

Which is not to say I agree with the White Huse on this, merely to clarify what appear to be the facts, and to point out that, tho' they have every right to be angry, what appears to have happen is no "distortion" and it can't be laid completely at Obama's feet.

To go further,
Quote:

In the wake of the oil spill, President Obama asked Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to produce a report on new drilling safety recommendations. Then on May 27 Mr. Obama announced a six-month deep water drilling ban, justifying it on the basis of Mr. Salazar’s report, a top recommendation of which was the moratorium. To lend an air of technical authority, the report noted: “The recommendations contained in this report have been peer-reviewed by seven experts identified by the National Academy of Engineering.”

That would be false, sir. In a scathing statement this week, the seven experts explained that the report draft they had reviewed did not include a six-month drilling moratorium. That was added only after they signed off. “The Secretary should be free to recommend whatever he thinks is correct, but he should not be free to use our names to justify his political decisions,” wrote the seven in a letter to Gulf Coast politicians.

The seven noted that they broadly agreed with the report and had even signed off on a proposal to suspend new deep water permits for six months. They also agreed to a “temporary pause” in drilling to perform additional testing on the Gulf’s 33 deep water wells that have already received permits to drill.

http://repjoebarton.amplify.com/2010/06/10/drilling-bits-of-fiction/

So the White House said the recommendations had been "peer-reviewed" by them, and added the moratorium after they signed off. Given Salazar requested the report, and they DID review it, his addition of the moratorium and claiming they had peer-reviewed the whole thing is something lawyers would have a ball debating, but it's neither factually true or untrue. The report WAS reviewed...he didn't say those who reviewed it had recommended a moratorium.

Also, note they
Quote:

agreed with the report and had even signed off on a proposal to suspend new deep water permits for six months. They also agreed to a “temporary pause” in drilling to perform additional testing on the Gulf’s 33 deep water wells that have already received permits to drill.
So they agreed with the report and agreed to a pause in drilling.

Boy, would lawyers have fun with this! It's a matter of splitting hairs; there is no definitive answer as to who is right. Angry they may be, but they weren't "distorted"; I understand their anger, they're members of the National Academy of Engineering, and no doubt don't look kindly on a full six-month moratorium. But that doesn't make their claim accurate. That one we could debate all day.

Damn, I gotta get off and go eat, this is ridiculous! This place is addictive...there oughta be a twelve-step program!

Anthony, I'm kinda on the fence on this one. Yes, I think an inspection of every rig should be done, without question...and by people who know their stuff! But I think as each rig is inspected, it should be allowed to get back to work.

And this from someone VERY much against drilling, mind you!

But the people of the Gulf have suffered so much already, and will continue to, and what I've heard and read shows that drilling is a major financial pillar and job creator, I have to concede that I wouldn't willingly take that away from them, too.

Just inspect them carefully, make any changes necessary to ensure safety, then let them get back to work. A flat six-month moratorium is going over the line, in my opinion.
