Hello,

I've been reading excerpts from the President's speech on CNN:

"Tonight, we pray for that courage," Obama said. "We pray for the people of the Gulf. And we pray that a hand may guide us through the storm towards a brighter day. "

An unexpected religious flair. It ought to please the religious folks in the world.

The president says the oil disaster "is the most painful and powerful reminder yet that the time to embrace a clean-energy future is now."

"I am happy to look at ... ideas and approaches from either party, as long they seriously tackle our addiction to fossil fuels," he said. "Some have suggested raising efficiency standards in our buildings like we did in our cars and trucks. Some believe we should set standards to ensure that more of our electricity comes from wind and solar power. Others wonder why the energy industry only spends a fraction of what the high-tech industry does on research and development, and want to rapidly boost our investments in such research and development.

"All of these approaches have merit, and deserve a fair hearing in the months ahead. But the one approach I will not accept is inaction. The one answer I will not settle for is the idea that this challenge is too big and too difficult to meet."

I'm glad to hear this. I hope he actually means it.

President Obama said he knows the government's six-month moratorium on deepwater oil drilling "creates difficulty for the people who work on these rigs."

"But for the sake of their safety, and for the sake of the entire region, we need to know the facts before we allow deepwater drilling to continue," Obama said.

One of the more intelligent things I've heard Obama say lately.

Obama said he will tell the chairman of BP to "set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company's recklessness" during their meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

"This fund will not be controlled by BP," Obama said. "In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party."

A good idea, though I always wonder how the government will mess up a good idea in the implementation. Here's hoping.

President Obama says he's asked the secretary of the Navy to "develop a long-term Gulf Coast restoration plan as soon as possible."

"The plan will be designed by states, local communities, tribes, fishermen, businesses, conservationists, and other Gulf residents. And BP will pay for the impact this spill has had on the region," he said.

Okay, more good stuff there. Get the affected people involved with the solution.

From the excerpts I read on CNN, the president managed to avoid saying anything monumentally stupid. I'm very tentatively optimistic, though I think each day will bring news of a new facet to this horror.

But nothing about what's really going on down there.

Nothing about BP taking carcasses in the middle of the night to avoid responsibility.

Nothing about the people getting sick, but had to sign waivers before they're allowed to clean up the beaches.

Nothign about BP telling volunteers NOT to wear hazmat suits because "it looks bad".

Nothing about them trying to keep the media away.

Nothing aboutwhat was in that video, about people with boats willing to work, but BP demanding waivers, and those who want to work even WITH the waivers not being put to use.

Nothing about ANY of the reality affecting the people and wildlife on the spot.

A 'Plan'. Like the "plan" to clean up after Katrina--and where does THAT stand? Plans are nice, but it requires someone in charge who actually wants to IMPLEMENT the plan. BP does not. And they're still in charge.

Just a prayer and a lot of words. It means nothing. No specifics. Nothing about taking over for BP--"escrow account"; yeah, right. Like that's going to happen, and even if it DOES, it'll never be enough. We could harness the American people's energy to help...but BP doesn't want THAT, and Obama's left them in charge.

Sorry, he's finally managed to lose me. It's all DC politispeak, no reality.

Hello Anthony,

Technology is breaking down, and we spend money on war instead. We break new ground on communications every day, but 20 year old equipment for deep water drilling, airlines, trains, bridges, nuclear plants- I'm frankly amazed more doody hasn't hit the fan at this point in time.

Oh, right near where I live Vermont Yankee nuclear plant just had a "small" leak.
OOOoops.

Hello Niki,

I suppose since I didn't expect him to address carcass-theft, I'm not as disappointed as you are. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's shielded from a lot of these details. I only heard about them from you, Niki. I haven't seen this stuff on the television or in the local paper. If not for you, I'd not know about it at all.

Don't mistake me. I'm not ra-rahing this fellow. But I didn't find much to fault in what he said. You didn't either, I think.

It's what he didn't say that's irking you. And yeah... There's a lot not addressed. At the least, a panel to review BP's response to this disaster and advise the president as to whether they should be relieved of control. (And not relieved of responsibility.)

Obama's speech was weak tea. He's just a politician, after all, so I don't see why I should be disappointed. Also, I am impossible to disappoint, because I am wise enough to expect the worst from everybody at all times.

Still, I wanted more.

I'm glad I'm not as cynical as you (yet). I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise, and I have no desire to be otherwise.

But what you said there: Yes.

I'm not blind enough to blame Obama for every piece of dirt that lands in my driveway like some, but the fact that the escrow account needs to be set up, equipment and knowledge provided by BP, then our government (bad as it is) take over and deal with our country's problems is basic and obvious at this point.

If they're keeping stuff from them, damn them all to hell. Though even that shouldn't matter; there's far and away proof enough of BP's intentions, lies, and fraud to make anyone realize no good will ever come of them handling this. He doesn't need the details--tho' I wish to hell he had them if he doesn't--there is quite enough to tell him what he needs to know.

I didn't listen to the speech. I figured I'd hera it dissected enough, and I have, and Anthony has been kind enough to give me some of the text. It's bullshit. It's politispeak. It sucks.

The ONLY thing that gives me any solace at all is that it would be just as bad under McCain, if not worse.

Oh, by the way, FauxNews afficionados: Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are at this moment tearing Obama a new one fiercely. Did "your boy" do the same to Dumbya during Katrina? Not an important point, but one I want to note.

Hello Niki,

I find it ironic that the two parts of the speech I most agreed with:

1) Stop the offshore drilling until we understand how to make it safer

&

2) Pursue an alternate energy policy

Are the two things some people find most worthy of railing against.

I'm glad the pressure is being kept up on the president. There is so much more to do, and I'm fine if it gets done for no other reason than because his feet are on fire.

Continued scrutiny and criticism is a good thing.

That works with torture, too, doesn't it? Hell, if you can just show one single nation that does something reprehensible, it gives us free rein to do likewise, doesn't it? Is that how it works in RappyWorld™?

I didn't hear anyone say we were going to stop drilling completely, everywhere; I heard someone saying we were going to stop deepwater drilling in our waters until we figure out how this happened, and how to make it NOT happen again. Funny that you, of all people, who have been crying the loudest about the disaster in the Gulf, now want to plow full speed ahead with MORE drilling of the exact same kind we've already proven is unsafe. Yeah, I know, I know - it's just one isolated incident, right? Thing is, by about the fourth or fifth isolated incident, you kinda start to wonder if maybe there's a pattern emerging.

"IF" ? *IF* you were a conspiracy nut?

And how does drilling bring the U.S. money? BP pays zero point zero dollars to the U.S. in corporate taxes. They allegedly pay royalties, but it's up to them to report how much oil they pump out, and what royalties they pay on that oil.

Okay, Sergeant, you get today's award for my first honest-to-gawd guffaw. Congratulations. Well done, my man!

Two problems tho':

Anthony, he only does that for the woman he loves. To much work otherwise.

And Sergeant, if he did that and one DROP spilled out or he sneezed or something, Crappy would be all over him for "fouling".

You're right Mike, it's getting to the point where Crappy is virtually incoherent. I had to read that post three TIMES to try and make sense out of it. I liked "Do the job you're MMS is SUPPOSE to be doing, slow things down, if you must but shutting down all drilling". Is he saying that YOU ARE the MMS? Or even if he got that sentence right, I didn't know you OWNED the MMS! And I'm astonished that you "must but" shtting down ALL drilling.

He's really losing it, isn't he? I should have quit a while ago as it's late, but I'm more and more tempted to stay 'cuz I've heard tell you guys have driven people nuts before. He didn't have far to go to begin with, but the cracks are really starting to show now. Think if we keep up the pressure we can manage it?

Yeah, but that's only because Bush did such an AWESOME job with Katrina. Hell, he had it under control so quickly that he was able to refuse over $854,000,000 in foreign aid, including OVER $470,000,000 IN OIL THAT WAS OFFERED TO US FOR FREE, WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WE WOULD SELL IT AND USE THE PROCEEDS TO HELP THE DYING AND DEVASTATED.

That Bush... now THERE was a leader! I'd follow that crazy-drunk sumbitch straight into HELL. And ironically, that's exactly where he led us!

Oh, hell yeah, Anthony. I can usually nail down Rushbo's talking points pretty quickly, just by listening to Rappy's blathering, nonsensical rants. You'll notice key phrases, and if you do a quick Google search, there they are, coming out of Rush's mouth. Or ass. From his ass to Rap's mouth, and then to this forum - that's the migration pattern of the right-wing talking points!

And if he did do that people would be complaining "he should have done it 4 times!"

Not surprised he sounded good. These speeches are pure Madison Avenue. Even Bushy had good speech writers and sounded sincere.

What I am WTFed about is how on the one hand people in the region are saying "we're dying down here! Generations will be affected, marshlands ruined for decades..." and then "Obama has to let us keep drilling! We're dying down here!"

What just happened?

What just happened is perfectly understandable. Those poor people are truly stuck between a rock and a hard place, more than anyone else I've seen in America in my lifetime.

Their fishing industry is huge, and employs many, many small families harvesting the shrimp, oysters, etc., that we all eat. That is gone--for a long time to come.

Their OTHER main industry is oil, which employs many, many OTHER families. They also get money from tourism, which is (excuse the expression) dead in the water.

So with (let's say)) 1/3 of their industry--fishing and tourism--not bringing in paychecks, 1/3 of their industry--oil--not paying them anything, the OTHER, say, 1/3 of their finances, the shopkeepers and all the other businesses that SERVE the fishing, tourist and oil industries, aren't making any money either.

It's easy to understand, horrible as it is. I"m very anti-drilling, as you know, but even I think that, once they've been REALLY inspected, the other platforms should be allowed to go on drilling. Those people desperately need help, and not just in cleaning up their environment.

The long-term financial impact of Katrina were a drop in the bucket compared to this. And they hadn't yet totally recovered from THAT.

Remember, the fishing industry in Prince William Sound is pretty much dead; most of the fishermen took up other work or moved away, the herring has never come back, TWENTY YEARS later. What does this say for the Gulf?

Where is the nearest fundamentalist preacher to say God hates Louisianna or they deserve it for New Orleans' sins or something? I'm sure it's coming...because this is gawd-awful, and nothing like these two blows in a short time has ever hit any other place in America.

This is exactly why you have to suspend any more drilling - you can't have it both ways. If Obama relents and says, "ok, drill again" and another disaster happens???????????? What will they say then? "We're REALLY dying down here... Obama should have taken more time to inspect the drills!"

A majority of voters there think George W. Bush did a better job with Katrina than Obama’s done dealing with the spill.

50% of voters in the state, even including 31% of Democrats, give Bush higher marks on that question compared to 35% who pick Obama.

Overall only 32% of Louisianans approve of how Obama has handled the spill to 62% who disapprove. 34% of those polled say they approved of how Bush dealt with Katrina to 58% who disapproved.

Bush did handle Katrina better the Obama has handled his leaky hole.

That in no way excuses the way Bush handled Katrina...which I have always considered a screwup at every level of Govt and that Bush's mistake was not saying 'screw you' to State and local authorities and just going in right away with everything he could find. For example...why not parachute or helicopter in the ready brigade from the 82nd or 101st. It might not have meant much but it would have been one hell of a symbolic act and they certainly could have delt with critical needs until ground transport and supply could be arranged.

As for Obama, he's been anywhere but out in front of this issue. Even now weeks later the White House's is showing little or no real leadership on this problem. No solutions are forthcoming and there's no 'all hands on deck' attitude. When you need an impact study to decide to put up sand bars to protect wetlands that are in imminent danger...thats poor leadership. When countries offer help but you can't sign a simple waiver form...Bush signed the waiver right away and welcomed all the help offered (we even had the Mexican Army sending a convoy through Texas).

You're lying. And you know you're lying.

Over $875,000,000 in foreign aid offered, for free, and Bush accepted less than $50 million of it. He turned down over $825,000,000 in aid, saying, "I got this!"

And then he went and ate birthday cake with John McCain while thousands died and he laughed. Then he went out for a round of golf, but not before flying over New Orleans and waving out the window of AF1 at all the stranded and dying.

Poor showing by the Federalies, on both accounts.

But in the case of Katrina, where folks have grown up knowing a major hurricane could / would flood the streets of New Orleans , folks sat and did nothing. Citizens and gov't officials alike. At least Bush had help ready and waiting to come in and set up, but Gov. Blanco sat on her hands, and dithered, until the last minute, when it was all but too late.

And "School Bus" Nagin ? Can't too soon forget about that great plan he had , which he then ignored completely.

Obama refused help from the Dutch, when it could have helped the most. What IS it when Dems and their inability to accept help ?

Hello,

I hear universal agreement that no one is happy with Bush or Obama's disaster responsiveness.

So now folks are arguing on whether it's better to be stabbed seven times or eight times, and who did more stabbing.

At this point, I'm not sure it matters who is incrementally better at doing something badly.

Right now, the only current policies the parties seem to disagree on is

1) Moratorium on Drilling

And

2) Investment in Alternative Energy.

Or did I miss something about the current stated policies where the Republicans and the Democrats also disagree?

Actually Republicans don't agree with either of those things...or rather they see them in different ways.

Republicans agree the BP should stop drilling till we can be sure they are safe. They also think stopping all deep water drilling by other companies is wrong. In the broader sense they want to stop deep water drilling because they want to massively expand shallow water drilling which is far easier and in the event of an accident, it can be easier to fix.

As for alternative energy investment, the Republicans favor it as a private initiative, perhaps supported by tax incentives. They generally oppose govt support for industry that can't compete in a fair market. There are notable political exceptions (like ethanol), but that is their general policy stance.

Hello,

The same ineffective watchdog agency in charge of making sure BP was safe, was also in charge of monitoring all the other rigs, from what I can tell. I think it's prudent to put a halt to things until they can all be peeked at with fresh eyes. This is doubly important because if another deep spill happens, we simply don't have the resources to combat it. We can't even seem to mobilize enough resources to combat the spill already occurring.

Ethanol is my least favorite alternative energy, mostly because it competes with food supply for resources. I wonder why it would get a free pass when compared with other alternates.

I might change my perspective if they can grow ethanol from some kind of algae or bacteria in huge vats, without supplanting farmland. That would seem to be more ideal. Cars that run on beer. ;-)

Tax incentives seem to be a good way to go, and I agree with that position. Make electrics, hybrids, and solar power cheap enough via tax credits, and more people will be able to choose them. This is already having an impact, and we can double-down on it, I think.

Tax breaks for power companies that replace a percentage of their power generation with alternative energy is also a good idea. It will motivate the alternative energy investment from the big lads in a big way.

Algae ethanol is one people have been trying to go for, because it solves a lot of the problems associated with other biofuels. The problem is, a lot of those food stuff industries have fairly large lobbies, and they have a lot of crop just sitting around because they're subsidized to not sell it to keep prices at a certain amount. Corn and sugar and some of the other food based ethanols are looking pretty good to them as a consequence.

Hello,

I found part of this analysis particularly lamentable. Not because the analysis is necessarily wrong, but rather because of what it says about the nation:

"President Obama's speech on the gulf oil disaster may have gone over the heads of many in his audience, according to an analysis of the 18-minute talk released Wednesday.

Tuesday night's speech from the Oval Office of the White House was written to a 9.8 grade level, said Paul J.J. Payack, president of Global Language Monitor."

It's lamentable that a 9.8 grade level speech is thought to go over people's heads.

This is something I agreed with after I re-read it:

"The monitor's chief word analyst found these three sentences insensitive: "Already, this oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. And unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it is not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days. The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years.""

As the article aptly points out, the area is still recovering from Katrina, years later. So to suggest to these people that a hurricane is a fleeting impact... well, that is indeed insensitive.

DREAMTROVE

The speech did not go over the heads of the people, but rather under it. The people aren't that dumb. The speech was filled with air, platitudes, and banked on hope and promises.

I'm not much for hope, as I see it as a placeholder for inaction. If you were to act, you wouldn't have to hope and pray because you had actually done something. Hoping and praying is more like there's an asteroid headed towards earth, and you don't want it to miss, because you can't do anything.

No doing anything, alas, seems to be his weak suit, as much as talking big is his strong suit. He has talked the talk, and now he continues to talk the talk.

I think it goes about like this:

We are a proud nation, a nation of people, white, black, hispanic and asian. We are a nation of young and old, of men an women. We stand tall, and walk on two feet, not four! (loud applause)

We must look forward to the future not back to the past. We will take these days one step at a time, as they come, not in blocks of seven or thirty, but each day individually, and what we do on those days will be our greatest achievement, for we will have done it, and no one can say that we didn't! (deafening cheers)

As the leader of this great nation, I will take my cue from the people, from you, all of you, and I will lead us in a new day. I will listen to everyone and then I will decide, because I'm the decider, heh heh heh, Ill check it over with my base first. Oh you might call them the elite... Yes, well, the future is ahead of us, and the past is over, behind us, like Cheney, heh heh heh, we're still a god fearing nation right?

Oh for christs sake obushama, just do something already, and if you don't know how to, get someone who does.

Ehm, well, the explanation I have that will make sense to normal people is that it increases profit. You don't sell as much, but otherwise the product being sold would have been grown-from-the-dirt cheap. So you make more actually by reducing the supply and increasing demand, because food is generally something people want and when it is scarce they'll pay any price for it.

The second part of it, the crazy conspiracy theorist side of it, is that it's a genocidal/population control tactic. Also that commercial farming is under the control of corporate middle people who are ensuring the market is flooded with genetically modified stuff, which freaks lots of us out.

Bingo. And as testified to before Congress this week, their spill response strategies aren't just similar, they are EXACTLY THE SAME. Word for word, the same, right down to protecting the Walruses in the Gulf of Mexico. And ExxonMobil's CEO flat-out admitted, stated on the record, that they don't have the ability to deal with a spill of this type, despite their plans claiming that they have the ability to deal with a spill of more than four times this latest flow estimate.

Quote:

It's even worse than that, Anthony. Beyond the grotesqueness of the idea that we're chumming food into oil while billions go malnourished in the rest of the world, ethanol isn't even a valid alternative. Last time I looked into it, the fuel costs of PRODUCING ethanol worked out to a factor of 1.6:1 - in other words, you burn 1.6 gallons of gas/oil/diesel to get back ONE gallon of ethanol. It's not even a zero-sum game; it's an outright net LOSS. This is beyond snake-eating-its-own-tail absurd. This is straight into Dante's Inferno territory, with us growing food to turn into fuel to burn in our cars, thereby not alleviating the demise of fossil fuels, but rather ACCELERATING it!

That's a big "IF", though. But it sure would help.

Yuppers. We have this false notion in this country that energy should be cheaper than it is. We subsidize the oil industry to the tune of some $15-18 billion per year, and that's not even counting the military outlays we dish out to help "insure" the supply of cheap oil. If we had to calculate the REAL cost of a gallon of gas, it would be closer to $4 or $5 a gallon once we factor in all the money we REALLY spend on it, that we never get anything back for. Well, almost never - it seems BP has brought us back several million barrels of returns...

Give more tax breaks for alternative energies, and give LESS tax breaks for big oil and big agriculture and ethanol.

Quote:

Tax breaks for power companies that replace a percentage of their power generation with alternative energy is also a good idea. It will motivate the alternative energy investment from the big lads in a big way.

Agreed.

One thing that everybody needs to bear in mind: Big oil isn't lobbying against green energy and alternative energy because they are against such things or don't believe they're possible. They're lobbying against them because they don't own them yet. They're delaying; they see it coming, and are trying to get their ducks in a row.

Is there anyone here who remembers a little kerfluffle during the Clinton presidency, when he had the temerity to suggest that maybe we shouldn't have soda machines in public schools, and should have juice or water machines instead? The soda industry HOWLED in protest, and lobbied HARD to derail any such legislation. And then they went about quietly acquiring juice and water companies, and lo and behold, a few years ago they announced - in cooperation with the Clinton Global Initiative - that they were endorsing removing soda machines from schools and replacing them with juice and water vending machines. Water costs more out of the vending machine, but it actually costs Coca-Cola next to nothing to put it there, so their profits go way up, AND they're able to convince you that they have your health and best interests in mind. Go figure.

Byte, Dream...

Thank you! Y'all just made my lunch hour. I needed a decent laugh today, and you both delivered.

For the longest time, I've been telling both major political parties to remember two important things...

Republicans: The American people are not all as dumb as you think we are.

Democrats: The American people are not all as smart as you think we are.

Republicans want to dumb the message down to a 5-second sound bite or a bumper sticker ("Let' Roll!"; "Love It Or Leave It!"), and Democrats (John Kerry springs to mind) want to drone on and on, over-explaining every tiny detail until the opposition finally just surrenders out of frustration in a flurry of bullshit.

Barack Obama seems to have taken both messages to heart. And somehow he manages to come across with short sound-bites and STILL not manage to convey much of anything.

"I believe that we as a nation and as a people can all agree that puppies are cute and children are good. And we need to remember that as we face the hardship of the days to come, for this will be our greatest challenge, but puppies really are cute, and children really are good. And you can take that to the bank, where they will give you a funny look and ask you to leave, and possibly call security. Good night, and god bless."

The federal bureaucracy kept some supplies which could have been used from being delivered, but by very large measure, none of that mattered much for the immediate crisis.

3 days after the D.H. explosion, the Obama administration specifically turned town direct help to clean up the oil.

The oil, or much of it, could have been stopped, diverted, collected...but no. Obama chose to allow this to happen.

“We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired and the cleanup is complete.”

- Barack Hussein Obama
